Material Monday I'd like to make this, but not a fan of plastic.

This potion making playset is a free 3D print file. I do not have a 3D printer, and from reviews I hear the resulting product is prone to mold and leakage when used with liquids due to the print layers. I would like to make one that is waterproof, colorful but not blinding (I prefer the second rainbow/gradient set) Something that a kid could play with, and wouldn't break easily. But not plastic if I can avoid it. I considered painted wood cups that could be done on a lathe, or funky and colorful glazed ceramics, but the bottles are tough in wood, and I'm worried a kid might break ceramic even if it's made very thick. I don't have an idea of what I would make a little cauldron out of. It stinks because the design of the set is so cute and cohesive, but it's also very plastic. Any ideas?

Discussion Help, My Tumbler Cup Broke Slightly..

Hi i dont know what flair i should use for this post, and i dont know where to go for this question here but i figured that hopefully someone from this subreddit knows how to seal this 😓. ill first explain what happened, my sibling woke up and went to clean something, and my tumbler cup from corpse bride was placed on my containers lid like just there, not laying, just placed there.

now i usually grab it to go and wash it to use it for my drinks and i never had it fall off until that date.. sigh my sibling doesn't know how this happened but they told me that while they were cleaning what they were doing, the poor tumbler fell off from the height of where it was placed onto the floor.. i heard it fall in the mourning, and assumed it either broke, something cracked that i can possibly fix it, but when i decided to let it stay there as is until today. i went to finally check what is wrong with it and i assumed; okay, its the bottom part that is cracked, but when i went to check on it at first it looked like nothing was broken, however, when i unscrewed the lid and went to feel it.. something was very much loose inside and i wanted to know what it was.

i went to the kitchen to place it inside the sink to first remove the remainder of my drink off of it and let the water pour in..and thats when i found out what it was, the inside of the second layer of the plastic came off.. i thankfully quickly removed the water before losing all of the cute mini bats thats inside to make that spooky design it has. while i was washing it with just water and placing the bats back inside with using the rubber brush i have(note: this happened because i placed my entire hand inside of the first layer of the plastic cup that has the design of corpse bride, and i didnt know the bats were stuck on there as well until i pulled out my hand out). i noticed, and i wanted to double make sure as well, that the bottom wasnt cracked and nope.

thankfully its not cracked but what is cracked is what i showed off as example photos the top lid rim and i want to know.. does anybody know how to seal it off? that way i can go back using it?? i have gorilla glue but have yet to use it.. i did go to look it up online if it was safe to use it to seal it from the inside but when i went to check online if its safe? i got a quick answer telling me to not do it. thats when i went to look up videos and couldn't really find what i was looking for and i dont know how to even search up to exactly fix this problem here..

now i am here asking for help...

Material Monday What keepsake can I make with these slippers- an old gift from my estranged homeless brother

My brother was my best friend, but I haven't heard from him in 3 years. He is homeless and for some reason prefers not to be in contact with anyone in our family.

Before everything happened and he changed and left, he gifted me these unicorn slippers he had "stolen" during a Christmas gift exchange game because he knew I would love them.

Now they are worn and starting to fall apart, and he is gone. What can I make from them as a keepsake?

Finished Craft I Made Homemade Cardboard Monstrosity. Aka My Furby Diva

This project took me a couple of weeks but my giant shiny diva is finally finished! The first few photos were taken by my husband yesterday while it was raining. Our neighbors officially think we are crazy and have Ring camera footage to prove it.

The following photos are some of the progression of building my Furby monster. I wildly over engineered the dome but I know for a FACT that it will hold up for a long time. The cardboard was water sealed and spray painted to give it longevity too. Adding the tinsel was the longest leg of this project. Apparently I forgot that shorter tinsel garland exists so I spent many hours cutting a curtain and laying each individual strand of tinsel on a piece of packing tape to make my own strips. Then I had to hot glue those strips to the body. This. Took. Forever.

I learned a lot of lessons and I definitely plan to make another Furby in the future. Diva needs a friend for sure!

Edit1: Wow you guys, I really wasn't expecting this amount of love and traction from this post. Thank you for being so lovely. Always remember to stay crafty!

Work in Progress I made my first Paper Mâché Pigeon Mask for Halloween. Coo coo!

Hey everyone! Excited to share my first time Halloween costume project ever — a full DIY Paper Mâché Pigeon Head!

Here is how I made it using mostly recycled materials:
The Base & Frame: I got some thick paper from Costco, cut it into strips, and glued them together using PVA glue to build the basic structural skeleton of the pigeon.

Shaping: I used leftover brown paper takeout bags glued over the frame to build up the main shape and contours.

Sculpting (Paper Mâché Clay): I made paper mâché clay out of shredded newspaper mixed thoroughly with PVA glue, then used it to sculpt all the details and features of the pigeon!
If you have leftover paper mâché clay, just wrap it tightly in plastic wrap (cling film) to seal it. It stays fresh and usable for your next sculpting session!

Painting Pro-Tip: I use acrylic paint but didn't have a paint palette on hand, so I wrapped plastic wrap over my table to use as a makeshift palette — worked like a charm and made cleanup super easy!

Super happy with how it turned out. Hope you guys like it, and happy Halloween! 🐦✨

I’m off to make wings!

Discussion UV resin issue

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have been attempting to coat my shrinky dink charms in UV resin but getting the same orange peel-like texture upon curing no matter what I try.

I make sure the resin is warmed up before using it, spread it carefully, pass a flame over it quickly to try pop any bubbles. I can see little microbubbles forming after the resin settles over the charm, but they don't react to my flame at all.

I use a nail lamp to cure it and I've tried different heat intensities/ timings to no avail. I leave the charm to settle for a while before curing and still nothing changes. Does anybody have any advice/ experience with this? Thank you!

Discussion Ideas for crafting for man with new disability

Hello! My friend’s husband was diagnosed with brain cancer in April of this year and has had a steady decline in function since this time. He is now paralyzed on his left side entirely. He is right handed though so we have that going for us.

Anyway- why I am writing this is because he has always been a very handy/tinkering kind of guy that was always building/creating stuff. Are there any crafts that would be cool for him that are able to be performed with one hand?? And from a wheel chair? Any input is appreciated❤️

(I hope this doesn’t come across as ableist or anything of the sort- I think it’s just the suddenness and the need for something in his last days of life that give him that feeling that you only get when you make something cool).

Material Monday Double acorn cap ideas?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I made crafts with acorn caps last year. I painted them gold, and had a great time making things with them. I also painted up a bunch of these double caps, but I can't quite decide what they'd be good for. I thought they'd make good ornaments (with felted acorns or marbles), but hanging them by ribbon, string, etc looks really awkward and covers up the little stem.

Anyone use these for anything before?

Work in Progress Help with my medium

I’m making a giant hot coco cup for pet photography for Christmas. The handle is a pool noodle, the cup is a big toy bin. The lip in the bin was too wide and made it look very off.

I tried to add some drips to it that im going to paint white, so it looks like whipped cream. I used cement clay that takes 24 hours to cure and it is now cracking. It’s not even fully dry yet 😭 Do I just chuck the whole drip idea? Is there anyway to save it? Is there a better medium I can use?

Any other ideas to make the lip less bucket-y?

Pictures attached are the process so far. tia.

Holiday/Seasonal Craft Making a Giant Cascarón (confetti eggs)

Post image
43 Upvotes

I recently saw some people talk about smashing Halloween pumpkins after the season, and was inspired. I thought how fun it would be to make a confetti egg (cascarón, the picture is an example) but really big like a small pumpkin. The kids would love it and I would rather not deal with messy pumpkins. But without using an actual eggshell, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make something that will smash well. Most materials are better at advertising how durable they are than how easy it is to smash them lol.

My best idea is to use portland cement in a thin layer around a balloon, but not mix any sand in so it's more likely to crack. But I haven't used it before and I'm not sure how well this would do. If I drop it on the sidewalk from say 6 feet would it smash?

The only other thing I could think of would be paper mache like making a pinata, but just use less layers so it's more fragile? That would probably crack open, but would probably not have as satisfying a smash.

Any other craft supplies that you would suggest? Maybe some sort of really brittle clay in a very thin layer?
