Mod Notice Quick mod update: new rule. We cannot help with AI-written patterns.

Hello, all! Most of us know by now that AIs and LLMs are not good at writing knitting patterns. They don't know how to knit. They certainly don't test knit their own "designs." Therefore, if you see any posts from people who have patterns written by AI, feel free to flag them so we can let them know that AI/LLM written patterns are faulty from the start. Then we can redirect the OP to r/knittingpatterns and Ravelry to find something more suitable (and human written).

Mod Notice FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hello all, mod literallyatree here. I've updated the sub so we have our own wiki pages for the FAQ and a special FAQ just for twisted stitches. The FAQ appears in our sidebar, as well as in the message you should see before posting, and is linked in Rule 7.

Please read the FAQ before posting.

If you are someone who helps by commenting, please know that when you comment "FAQ" or "TwistFAQ" (without quotes), it will trigger automod to come and comment a link to the one you summoned. Thank you to all those who comment to offer their help. Without you, this wouldn't be much of a community.

Because the FAQ is much more accessible now, the mod team will be enforcing Rule 7 with a little more scrutiny now.

sweater question Colorwork still puckering after blocking

Post image
28 Upvotes

I'll preface by saying that I've learned a lot about colorwork since knitting this sweater, and I promise I'll make my floats looser next time! (Also I now understand color dominance so ignore those issues as well)

That said, this is a finished sweater that I do really like, but the colorwork is still puckering just a little after blocking. Does anyone have any tips on how to loosen the puckering? Any particular blocking technique that you use?

I held two strands together for the yellow to get the marled effect, which I'm sure isn't helping.

SOLVED-THANK YOU Can’t tell if this is a dropped stitch or what?

Just finished this sweater (Lakes jacket) and only when I was blocking it did I see this weird stitch poking out. I don’t see any laddering or anything to make me think it’s a dropped stitch, so maybe a snag while I was washing it? Just not sure how to tell exactly or where to go from here since I clearly can’t ladder up at this point!

SOLVED-THANK YOU Missing one stitch— what do I do now?

Hello! I just finished the yoke of my first raglan sweater project and when counting the stitches, I realized that the back is missing one stitch (I have 97 instead of 98). I recounted several times, even using stitch markers to mark 20 because I don’t trust myself, but it didn’t change the result. Both sleeves and front have the right number of stitches.

My question is, will this become a problem later on? Could I just ignore it or should I cast on a stitch somewhere, if so, where? Thank you so much in advance!

Edit to add that there’s ribbing at the end, so would I need an even stitch count?

sweater question Help! Can I fix the back? :(

I just finished my first color work worsted knit sweatervest! It's the Nordic bloom sweater ⭐

I followed the pattern for a medium and adjusted the pattern slightly to not have to steek and add a button band. I also know I tend to have a looser tension, which is why I chose the medium since I fell somewhere between large/med for the sizing.

Unfortunately the back is super wide...

The first pic is me blocking it after washing, the second is before blocking. I folded over the back to where I want it to be while it blocks but I'm not really sure what to do. Sewing it would look funky I think?

Anything I can do? 😭

Can someone help me fix this hole in my knitting project? I have the correct number of stitches on my needles and they are still following the correct knit/purl sequence so haven’t added/dropped a stitch. I am knitting on circular needles and this is the neck.

gauge question Ribbing to Stockinette Ratio

• Upvotes

Is there a ratio between k1p1 ribbing and stockinette?

For example, I want to make a bottom-up hat that's 22 inches in circumference, has a k1p1 band, and is stockinette the rest of the way up.

I could cast on my stiches, work the ribbing, and hope that when I get to stockinette it works out. But if it doesn't, I have to frog it all and start over.

I'm a slow knitter (especially when ribbing!) and it's frustrating to pull it all out & start over. Then, yarn weight, needle size, and tension all come into play. I also find that I'm awful at assessing guage from swatches, even blocked swatches.

Just wondering if there's a known formula or ratio between k1p1 ribbing & stockinette that would speed my process.

where did i go wrong? Help with blocking?

To preface, I understand that knitting naturally curls, but I had wet blocked my vest (made using The Vest pattern by Nicole santos) and left it pinned to dry for well over 24 hours, and it still curls. It’s acrylic yarn so I don’t want to put too much heat on it, but I also don’t have a steamer. Does anyone have any tips for blocking to try and flatten it out a bit more? I’ve included a picture of how the vest naturally sits plus one where I’ve flattened it out

Help! As the title says - I find my bind off too tight. Please only notice the body as I will redo the sleeves.

Should I just go with 4mm needles only in the bind off? Any suggestions?

Thank you.

I'm not making anything, just practicing. Why does it look kinda odd? Is it my skills or the quality of the yarn? The tension?

pattern question Helka Hat

I want to knit the Helka Hat by Knitters and Friends. It calls for worsted weight yarn held with mohair.

I really want to use a color combo that calls for fingering weight yarn. I could hold the fingering yarn double, but would I have to add a second strand of mohair too? Holding four strands at once seems ridiculous, but I’m desperate for this color combo.

I’ve also considered trying to do the math to compensate for the big drop in yarn weight, but I’ve never adjusted a pattern like that before.

What would you recommend?

Was looking for something similar als the crochet wheat stitch and found this on Pinterest.

I am confused tho, you increase one on every side, but the picture looks like two. I have a hard time trusting pinterest anyway but saw different examples with similar charts

EDIT: A loop is indeed two strings.. Welp that was my brainfart for the day

where did i go wrong? Need advice regarding arthritis

I have been knitting for under a year and have fallen h-a-r-d for this fabulous new hobby. I’ve already spent a small fortune on needles, yarn, accessories, books, etc.

But I’ve developed significant arthritic pain in my hands. I have long had arthritis of my hips, but have never had it in my hands until I started knitting. The pain is worse after I’ve knitted for long periods.

Short of stopping knitting altogether, what are steps I can take to manage the pain or reduce it so that I can keep up with my new found love?

sock question Second time sock knitter - any tips?

Thumbnail

Helloooooo everybody!

I have a few questions about my new sock project. This is my first time doing a slip stitch pattern with two colours and also my first time knitting a boomerang heel/short row heel (I hope these terms are correct, I typically use german terms and this is all google came up with - sorry in advance!).

I think my pattern was knit a bit loose (my usual tension is crazy tight and the first couple of attempts wouldn't fit my flat feet). The heel I am pretty happy with, i just have the tendency for those little holes on the side and didn't follow the instructions well enough. Are there any beginner mistakes I made and how can I fix it so it looks cleaner? Thank y’all!

sweater question Adding short row shaping on a raglan right before the sleeve split

Hi! Sorry if my question has been answered, I tried to look for advice on this and didn't find anything helpful.

I am currently knitting the Cutie Tee by Sofia Holck Petersen. It's a raglan, and the pattern doesn't include any shaping/the back and the front are symmetrical. My issue is that I reached a point such that when I try it on, the front already reaches my armpit but the back is higher by quite a bit. The pattern instructs to add a number of armpit stitches. My issue is, won't this be too tight or shaped weird? If I keep knitting until the back reaches lower I think the front will bunch up, and if I CO armpit stitches now I think the armpit will pull too much on the back.

To solve this I was thinking to do short rows on the back at this point. Does this sound like a sane idea? I have never done short rows on a sweater, only on socks, so I am not sure how to go about this. I am also having trouble finding instructions online on how to do short rows at this stage. Mostly I am finding help for short rows at the back of the neck. Help? Please and thank you 💕

So I’m a size D (80 stitch cast on) I’m struggling by what the pattern means by k6 (4,2,2)(2,2,2). How does k2 for me make this fit? Or is it k6+4+2+2 (k14)?

pattern question Mitten thumb question

I decided to start some mittens as my first cable project - it’s a free pattern (severnside mittens)

But I’m confused at the instructions…

I worked the following two rows:

P1 (2, 3), slm, working the cable chart or
the cable written instructions from rnd 1 (7,
1), between markers. Slm, p 1 (2, 3), k to
end slipping thumb marker.

On the next rnd, start inc for thumb (rnd 2
(8, 2) of cable chart or the cable written
instructions as follows: work as established
to thumb marker, slm, m1L, k4. (1 st inc’d).

Nooooow this is where it goes into the following instructions where I feel like I have to guess …

Rep this thumb inc rnd every third rnd
another 4 (5, 6) times = 9 (10, 11) sts for
thumb.

What do I do in between the rounds for the thumb? Would I do p2 (I’m in size 2) and then knit to the end ? Or knit the whole way through? Similar to what the second round does?

Thanks!
