Discussion How would you guide a new artist curious about using AI?
Hi r/Artists –
We have in this community a collective of some of the most passionate artists online. This subreddit has been a place to share work, offer critique, and ask for help at every stage of the artistic journey. As we look toward ways for r/Artists to evolve, we see that this community also has an opportunity to lead through the simple act of discussion.
As you may have noticed, the discourse around the costs and benefits of artificial intelligence is highly passionate today, even quite contentious at times. A generous description of the state of things would be to say that this is the natural process of a culture metabolizing a new technology, determining a new ethical code to match a new array of possibilities. A cynical description of the state of things would call it a rhetorical civil war; carving a cultural rift with those who see a fight for the preservation of humanity against those who would give up our future to the machines on one side of the chasm. On the other, those who see a fight for progressing human potential against those who are naively attached to unnecessary human toil and suffering. Global leaders from heads of state to industrialists to the Catholic Pope have issued pointed commentary. The lived reality is that everyday people are caught in the in-between, simply having to make a choice every day about what tools we do or do not use to become the person we are trying to be.
Cloaked in the anger, the guilt, the shame, the temptation of artificial intelligence is a deeply human, artistic question: who am I trying to be?
Reddit is a place people asking questions look toward for how other people who have asked the same have answered. So when we wrestle with discussions like this here – that touch the heart of artistry (and yes these em-dashes are human-made) – we have the opportunity to shape how others are guided on their journey when they wrestle with the same. So let’s talk about it.
Consider this conversation like you would consider any work of art.
Be truthful to yourselves, be kind to each other. Follow our community rules.
This is the art of discussion.
Let’s talk: How would you guide a new artist curious about using AI?

Announcement Updated r/Artists Rules: Announcement and Discussion
Hi r/Artists -
We kicked off our time together last week with a post inviting feedback from all of you on how this subreddit should evolve moving forward. After reading through everyone's input, we drafted up a set of rules to help define our community moving forward. Rule creation, like art, is a process of drafting. It is very unlikely that we got this right at first pass. So let's talk about it to get it right in the end.
Our v1 new rules for r/Artists are listed out below (and are live in the subreddit info). I've also added a parent comment for each rule in the thread below so they can be discussed individually.
One small note -- some of you shared great feedback and ideas on some topics that don't need to be reflected in the rules, at least for now (flair is a great example of this). We will dedicate some time to talk about all of that and share some ideas soon. For now, please keep conversation in this thread focused on discussion about subreddit rules. Thank you!
1. Keep feedback constructive
Art is a kindred quest. Whether you make art to encounter yourself or to encounter others, r/Artists is a place where we come together to share in the journey. Critique the art. Encourage the artist. Receive feedback graciously.
2. Keep AI contained
No AI Art and no AI Discussion outside of designated, official threads. AI, both as a tool and as a subject, is highly contentious and quickly becomes all-consuming, raising emotionally-charged, existential questions about the meaning of art and being an artist. Art is about confronting questions like these head on. For r/Artists to be a place that shapes discussion for artists, AI can neither be denied nor fixated upon. AI content and discussion will be removed outside of official threads.
3. This is not a marketplace
No posts soliciting commissions, buying or selling or speculating on value. Comments replying with interest in purchasing art or supporting artists are welcome. Subreddit hosted art auction threads may be hosted occasionally.
4. No spamming
Unreasonably reposting the same artwork and egregious self-promotion will not be tolerated.
5. No low effort posts
If you want to be an artist, be an artist. While there are plenty of places online to look like an artist, r/Artists is a place for becoming a better artist. This requires earnest commitment to the creative process, not just the creative product. Simplicity in art is an achievement, not an accident.
6. Nudity is not the main character
If there is nudity in your artwork, tag it as NSFW. If the sole or primary purpose of the artwork appears to be sexual, it may be reported and removed.
7. Properly credit all artwork
When sharing another artist’s work, name them appropriately.
8. Respect the art of conversation
Discussion belongs in r/Artists. Keep it relevant and treat conversation like a craft you commit to. Posts that open up conversations about the pursuit and philosophy of art are welcome. Posts that are baiting, low effort, mocking, or bullying are not. Be kind to each other and intellectually honest about the topic.
9. When in doubt, state your case
Part of being an artist is provocation and discussion. If you have a post you feel might be a violation of any of the above rules, state your case in a comment immediately after posting and it will be considered. Violating posts without a stated case will not be considered.
10. Respect Reddit’s Rules
Follow Reddit’s platform rules. If you don’t know them, they are outlined here.
EDIT: Added 'commissions' to Rule 3.

Illustration | Critique Welcome The Monster Under The Hills (a story in two pictures) [mixed media with silver foil, and gold and copper pens]
"The Monster Under the Hills hung the silver mirror from the tree, and waited. Whenever a young maiden discovered the mirror hanging in the tree, and became distracted by admiring her reflection, the Monster would pounce. One by one, he dragged the screaming girls into his lair and feasted on their delicious flesh."
[NOTE: there is music, and it does add something so I recommend listening if it's convenient. I know that's not usual, but it's new to me, and I make these videos for friends. The first picture will be in the comments]
These pictures are inspired by my ongoing relationship with a psychopath, and the phenomenon of "mirroring". I actually wonder if we only ever fall in love with what we project into other people, or reflections of ourselves we see in them. I've done a few pictures about that concept now.
It's also part of a series called "Monster Traps", which originally was pictures of traps set for the Monster, but in these the script has been flipped and the monster is laying the trap.

Hi just wanted to throw my hat into the ring and show off my art, was generally just curious what people think and what general trends I should fix or gear closer towards? I am trying to advance past a purely left lateral view in all of my pieces all the time.

Discussion Deactivated after 5 years
This will be my only post here because I feel like I just need other artists who have/are going through what I have to know that you’re not alone and that—yes—it feels absolutely sh*tty.
I’ve been in an art community ship fandom for around 5-6 years now and have grown significantly in my art throughout that time. I remember always having such big motivation to draw, interact with anyone and everything, make videos, write stories, make friends and mutuals, and overall trying to make my name known in some way for the fandom. I reached out to all socials: Tumblr, Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, Youtube, and even Pinterest. I’m talking everything and managing so much, and I didn’t just stop at drawing or making videos/animatics, I even wrote a lot because I always loved to share any AU‘s.
My favorite apps to post to was X and Instagram, b it mainly Insta. I always loved receiving comments and messages, and seeing people excited when I would follow others back made me feel really giddy and excited. It didn't matter if I was working, schooling, or had free time because I always made time to post whatever I felt. Besides the few times I took necessary breaks to chill out or because my hands would cramp. I promise burnout wasn’t that big of a problem for me because something always came to mind. I loved the arts, and I loved sharing and being in the same space as others that liked the same things as me. I was able to reach 2k followers on instagram, and that felt like such a great achievement because 2k people is a LOT. Like most don’t really take that into consideration. But I still wanted to grow more, and I felt like I’d be able to do it as I improve things and appeal to the algorithm and trends while still keeping my signature, because that happens.
Then I noticed that the interactions would stop. People had slowly stopped commenting on my posts, and at first I didn’t mind it too much but it did strike me as odd. It had reached to a point where almost no one would comment, and I tried to spark up some interaction by asking questions in my captions, and even that didn’t work. I felt sad, a little heartbroken because, to be honest, replying to people was probably my most favorite part. I’m very social and loved having convos with people in the comments and answering questions. But, again, it got to a point where the number plummeted. Even the likes, and that felt kind of disappointing. Maybe I had to improve on something? Were people tired of seeing me? Is my art not appealing anymore? So many questions raced through my mind and I felt more stuck trying to answer them than to fall into an artist depression where I stop drawing at all, because I didn’t. I took a big break to see what I could do, came back, and nothing happened. Nothing changed. What changed was my emotions.
I had mutuals in the same fandom who were just starting out, and seeing them improve in everything was so exciting that I felt proud in a way, because I had watched them practically from the beginning. Though, I did feel jealous. They grew a lot faster than my account had, more people reposted their art everywhere, and a lot of people had their pieces as pfps. I felt envious and pretty slumped because in the years I’ve posted, I’ve never seen my stuff get to that level ever. I tried being optimistic, but my mind would tell me that I needed to appeal and change again. I tried so many art styles and coloring styles, dynamics, poses, anything to test and see what got interaction but even then nothing, AGAIN, changed. I tried taking another small break to see what had to change, or maybe to see if I just didn’t want to draw anymore because, to be honest, that was one of the main reasons I started feeling insecure about my art. No one mentioned my name like my mutuals, no one said “THE (username)” or stuff like that. I felt so discouraged and heartbroken.
After a while, I tried to switch platforms and start posting on Twitter. While it worked in the beginning and I figured out the algorithm really quick, comments weren’t really a thing, and I didn’t mind it because Twitter isn’t really the place where people comment…right? Apparently not, I suppose. Me and my more popular mutuals shared the same amount of moots, and I would see the difference right away. While I would comment on a lot of my moots posts, they wouldn’t comment on mine, but then my mutuals would post and I’d see almost all of the them in the comments and then some other accounts and I realized, yes, comments do still exist on Twitter. I think that was my breaking point and I posted..maybe a few times a month? Then it went to once, and now basically none. I lost motivation to write, post, or interact with anyone and unfollowed a lot of people because I felt extremely frustrated and think “what’s the point anymore?”.
There was a point. There was a time where there was such a big point in me posting. I wanted a name, I wanted to share my ideas and thoughts, I wanted to befriend people that shared the same interests as me, I wanted peoples opinions/critiques/commentary on my stuff, and I wanted so much. Since I was much younger, having a popular art account was my dream. I started it, and I practically failed it. And that’s what hurts. Perhaps I grew too fast in a span of a year when I was at my “peak”. But my max now is just 2k followers on Insta and 2.9k on Twitter, I never grew any bigger, and I feel terrible now which is why I made this decision. Logging in feels terrible, my heart breaks when I even look at my art and all the apps I used to make things, and I feel disappointed just seeing my account. So, in my brain, the solution was to disappear altogether.
There is no point.

Mixed Media | Critique Welcome The seven faces of The Darkness
I did this around a year ago, and it was inspired by something someone close to me told me about how they see themselves.
This is all just one picture, I didn't do anything special, not even deliberately changing the camera angle or lighting. This just shows how unpredictably my phone camera behaves, especially in low light. I enjoyed the accidental effect, and always meant to put them together into one collage.
It was an attempt to create a picture which was black on black on black on black ... I think I used five different blacks. There was a tiny bit of red, I think, but nearly all the colour you see is camera artefacts. I did mess up slightly due to inexperience with the materials, but to me the execution doesn't matter too much as the way the pictures came out is the most interesting part of this. Also, this was a concept that I was trying to record, the image that came into my mind when my boyfriend was speaking to me about his psychopathy. I am still unclear about what "The Darkness" is exactly, but this was my impression at the time, and it's an amalgam of that and my perception of the dark side of his personality.
I have done a lot of pictures about him, and many of them are quite disturbing, but it's all just from him talking about his life and experiences, introspection of my own, stuff like that. And some of them are funny or sweet, too.
