Hi!

I wanted to share with you all this jumper that I recently made. It’s based on Tin Can Knits Ice Fall sweater pattern, but with a custom yoke designed by my son, based on a favourite album of mine.

My son spent about an hour designing the yoke pattern to fit the 12x29 stitch motif repeat that the original pattern uses.

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to wear the jumper at a book signing by the artist and he loved it so much that he sent his crew after me to interview me about it!

Not sure when or where it’ll be used, but it’s nice that all that hard work was acknowledged.

EDIT: wow thank you so much everyone for your comments and upvotes, it means a lot!

I forgot to say that, coincidentally I sat next to someone at the airport who recognised me from the book signing. She told me she was there and so was her editor, she said he’s a snob that doesn’t like anything (her words!) but he loved the jumper and thought it was great!

She raised a valid point, that the yoke just looks cool, and you don’t have to recognise the reference. But if you do, it’s even more amazing!

Thanks again everyone!

Thinking about making a gray one so it can go as a hammerhead shark next Halloween...

No pattern, but I can share my technique/stitch counts, if anyone wants it! I've made three so far (one pad takes me 3 hours start to finish) and they scrub so much better than the disposable mop pads. Yarn's just basic Lily Sugar 'n Cream cotton, straight off the cone.

I really wanted to finish my first jumper before the baby arrives (2 weeks to go) couldn’t resist making a matching bonnet with the letter yarn & I plan on making another for the baby 👶🏼

I didn’t use a pattern, I just made 4 rectangles and sewed them together! I’m a beginner so this was a great way to get used to knitting

Yarn is king Cole explorer in super chunky

Rave (like a rant, but in a good way) New England Yarn Tour

I am from Phoenix, AZ. This last week, my mom and I roadtripped around New England for the leaf-peeping journey of a lifetime. When I travel, I like to stop by a LYS and purchase yarn that is local as possible. Then, I knit a pair of socks with that yarn. Ideally using a pattern that in some way represents that state! Therefore, my number 1 to-do on this trip was to stop in a yarn store in every state we visited. Here is how it went…

Stop 1: Simsbury, CT
Simsbury Yarns - I loved this place. There was a table filled with people knitting, and even a doggy greeter. The individual who helped me was so kind, and they had a great selection in a very large space. There is also a cafe upstairs where we had brunch that was incredible.

Stop 2: Boston, MA
Boston Fiber Company - Also an awesome stop. They had such unique items, including yarn containing possum fiber from Australia! THAT was a first, and now I want to knit a sweater someday using possum fiber. The person working there was also so kind, and had great information on locally dyed yarn. I love that Toil & Trouble yarn was dyed in Salem, MA. The dyer owns a store there called Circle of Stitches—so cute!

Stop 3: Waterbury, VT (just outside of Stowe)
Yarn - Yup, that’s the name of the store lol. I was given a lovely tour, and the individual working taught me about what it means to wear colors meant for your color type. Unfortunately they didn’t have TOO much local yarn because Rhinebeck had just happened the previous weekend. However, Line By Line was locally dyed.

Stop 4: Bethlehem, NH
LYS (Love Yarn Shop) - I love when I walk into a yarn store and a bunch of people are sitting around chatting and knitting. It’s such an immediately welcoming environment. This was super cute and cozy with a large selection of yarn that was, ironically, dyed in Vermont lol. The visit had to be quick since it was a stop while we were driving to Maine, but you could easily spend time there chatting and making friends!

Stop 5: Portland, ME
The Purling Pigeon - I love birds, and the concept of a pigeon mascot makes me so happy. I LOVE the colors that the store owner dyed. They were incredible, and so unique. They’re by far my favorite store-owner-dyed yarn. They also had SUCH cute knick-knacks, and the individual working was SO lovely. Something that stood out to me is how welcoming she was to new knitters. Two of them separately stopped by looking for supplies for their very first knits, and the employee was so patient, kind and enthusiastic.

Overall, even though I spent way more than I expected (the exact amount is between me and my Chase Freedom card), I am thrilled to have these souvenirs from my trip. Please let me know if you have any questions and I’d be happy to try and answer them! I’ll just be over here knitting my state socks!
Edit: TIL American Opossum’s and Australian Possum’s are completely different animals lol.

Finished Object Finally finished! Double Knit LOTR Adventure blanket

Started in February, but stopped working on it over the summer when it was too hot. All in all, took about 3-4 months of work.

I did not mirror the pattern so that the front & back's text are both "the right way", mostly because my brain couldn't handle it. I'm assuming most people wouldn't even notice.

Will I ever cast on 444 stitches in italian tubular again? No.
Can I say I did it? Yes.

Pattern is: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lotr-adventure

I picked up 84 stitches for the sleeves and only did 6 cm of ribbing instead of 8. The ribbing parts hurt my hands so much, tiny needles with thick wool was a work of the devil. I know some people hate this sweater and think it is ugly… i think I still like it. I kind of have to because I spent a lot of time and money on it. Please be nice 🫶🏻 yes I still had to weave in the ends for this picture.

It was a fun challenge being my 2nd completed project. I got to use circular needles, learn cables, and use DPNs. I'm excited to try more now! I should've probably cut out the last section or cable rounds but I followed the pattern so now I'll just have to suffice and fold the brim for a comfortable fit. But hey I learned and now I know better for next time that it's okay to follow your gut.

Finished Object Handmade Leatherbag for knitting needles

I spent quite some time searching online for a bag for my knitting needles, but I couldn’t find one that I was completely happy with. Often, there wasn’t enough space, the compartments weren’t quite right, or the bags were too expensive. So I decided to plan and make a leather bag myself.

So far, I had only made a small leather sheath for a knife, so this was my second leatherworking project. I have to admit that there were quite a few moments along the way when I doubted whether I would actually be able to pull it off. Especially since, apart from the leather itself, I didn’t want to buy much else, such as tools. In the end, I managed to make it using just a thicker sewing needle, an awl, a pair of scissors, and waxed thread.

Now, there’s finally enough room for everything I need: long and short knitting needles (KnitPro Ginger), double-pointed needles, and, in the smaller pockets, stitch markers and cables. On the back, I added a large pocket for very thin, fixed circular needles.

The leather is chamois-tanned deer leather. I can still see plenty of flaws in the finished bag (uneven stitching and cuts that aren’t quite clean), but this leather was so much harder to work with than the leather I used for my first project. It was so thin that it kept stretching and shifting out of shape, and there were often several layers to stitch through at once.

I have to admit, though, that I’m a little proud of myself. 😊

It took me around 4–5 months to complete.

Work in Progress Remembered how to knit but forgot how to read

I decided to go back to working on a project I abandoned 3+ years ago so I took the time to relearn how to knit and have been working on it all day only to realize its backwards. I guess I forgot we read left to right. But also I sent progress pictures to 6 people and not one of them told me I was wrong so I guess I made 6 enemies today

Finished Object Eirwen Cardigan for $5

Super happy with this one! It’s the Eirwen cardigan from Knitty Magazine https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/eirwen-3

The yarn is from a large men’s REI sweater I thrifted for $5, it was an 80-20 wool nylon blend that the yarn came out to a two-ply worsted weight. I will probably always wear a long-sleeved shirt under this since it is a bit itchy, but overall super satisfied with the yarn. I still have a really big cake left!

This was also my first outing with bust darts, since I’m around a C-D cup; I believe I did the small size, then added vertical darts and light waist shaping. Sleeves and body were both shortened. Also did sewn bind offs on the ribbing and I cord bind off on the button band because I thought it looked better, but these were indeed time-consuming choices. Pretty happy with the results; I would probably make the sleeves a little wider in hindsight, but I got them reasonably comfortable in blocking so it’s fine.

Tips and Tricks How long did it take you to get fast?

Post image
• Upvotes

I am a new knitter. I’ve only been knitting for a month and a half. I’m 44 years old. I was never taught as a child, so I’m learning now as an adult. I’ve taken three classes at local yarn shops and have purchased local yarn supporting the local economy. I have made three hats and I’m now working on a scarf. The scarf is taking me forever because it’s long. Question for all of you that have been doing this for a while: how long would it take you to get fast and what is your average length for a project? I want to make a Sophie hood and I’m on my way to the SAFF fiber festival this morning, but I’m a little down by my slowness.

Help - equipment Have I worked myself into a dead end?

I’ve started working on this bottom up sweater vest in the round. I’ve come to the part where I need to separate into front and back to shape the armholes and knit flat. But I don’t think I can actually work this pattern flat because one color will always be on the wrong side. Am I missing something, or did I knit myself a dead end?

Bonus pic of Magpie helping me think this through

Discussion How many hours a day do you knit for?

I've had to dial back my knitting significantly because my nerve pain has been pretty unbearable and I'm just wondering what everyone counts as a normal amount of time knitting? I overdid it because I knit for 1 hour straight on Thursday because I was impatient and wanted to finish a project I've been working on for a million years, my hands still feel awful (there's other stuff going on with my joints aside from knitting and I am seeing a Dr about it soon dw, hand pain is just an occupational hazard when you're disabled lol)

Work in Progress Colour dominance

Thumbnail

Hi all! I’m doing this pattern at the moment and wondered which colour should be dominant? It looks to me like blue should be dominant on the side with the writing, and white on the other, but I don’t know if you can swap dominant colour when knitting in the round! The more I look at it the more I think white is dominant but I don’t have a good enough eye to know yet!
