looking for recommendation Online knitting stores *not* owned by private equity?

I've been stashbusting so it's been awhile since I bought yarn. However I've been hearing disturbing things about a lot of my go to online yarn shops being bought by private equity. I know the sewing sub has a whole guide to non private equity crafting stores. Hoping there's something similar for knitting?

I'm hoping for something with a broad range of natural fiber yarns, but that does not only have Artisinal And Very Expensive Fancy Yarn.

Helpful Hints! šŸ’” I had my knitting needles confiscated at the airport… so I started mapping airport rules

Hi everyone,

A while ago, I had my knitting needles confiscated at airport security, even though I thought they would be allowed.

After that, I started looking into the rules and realized something surprising — they vary a lot between airports, and often aren’t clearly explained.

Since I know many of us like to knit while traveling, I decided to start a small project:

I’ve been contacting airports and collecting official information about whether knitting needles are allowed in carry-on luggage.

I’ve put everything into an interactive map, showing how different airports approach it (allowed / restricted / not allowed / still waiting for response).

šŸ‘‰ You can check it out here: https://gentlemessknits.carrd.co/

I’m still adding more airports, so if you’ve had any experiences (good or bad), I’d love to hear them! šŸ§¶āœˆļø

She's had split dye pink and purple hair for years, and I saw these yarns and couldn't help myself.

The pattern is self-drafted, knit flat and seamed together after. Each colour section is 38sts wide in worsted weight yarn. The yarns I used were Heartland by Lion Brand in the colour Hot Springs, and Superwash Merino by Loops & Threads in the colour Dark Pink.

Posting to share my new top! šŸ’ž

I finished my first step-by-step sweater early this year and after doing a couple tanks, I was excited to find this pattern (Roni Sweater by Kolibri). It was a surprisingly fast knit, easy to follow without being boring, and soft to boot! I think it's my first knit that I feel is almost entirely devoid of mistakes 😁

I was sort of taught to knit when I was 10, forgot, and then picked it back up now at 26!! This is my second project using a pattern and I got help with these stripes from some kind ladies at the knit shop to make them jogless and properly carried :) extremely proud of this even though it’s simple, I feel like a wizard! (If you look closely you can see where I lost a stitch and fixed it with a sneaky increase šŸ˜šŸ¤‘)
The pattern I’m working here is the purlsoho keyhole scarf (striped ver.)

help needed Thoughts on "Puff" Square Quilt Blanket Concept???

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm currently attempting one of those "puff" square quilt blankets because I have SO MUCH yarn sitting in my closet. But with that said, some of the yarn I have is incredibly hard to find now so I'm very limited with what I got to use. But thoughts on this design for the overall quilt? The colours are approximate

rant ā€œFinishedā€ frankie sweater (celebrated too soon i guess)

Post image

I ā€œfinishedā€ my frankie sweater today. ā€œFinishedā€ because I am now currently frogging parts of it. After all the weaving of the ends done, I realized that the sleeves are not symmetrical. Must’ve messed up my counting. And the ribbing of the body is wrong.

This is my second sweater and I should’ve been suspicious because I felt that everything was happening too smoothly. Got a bit too confident and now we’re here 🄲

I guess this is also a process of learning how to knit. Tough one but ugh I can’t wait to get this done 😭

look what I made My friend is helping me out in a huge way, I made her a puppy as a way to thank her

I'm doing a larger renovation at home and it would've been horrible (but still technically possible) to live at home during the approximately 4 weeks they're building. As soon as my friend heard about the project she instantly said I should stay with her instead. I'm gratefully accepting her help and wanted to do something extra as a thank you. Therefore I made this little puppy for her. He's cute and cuddly and will also come with some tea, snacks and candles. I will also make sure to cook and bake while staying there :)

Pattern is the beagle puppy by Claire Garland in the recommended yarns. I used a plastic safety nose instead of knitting the nose.

help needed I’m a newbie and have recently tried finger knitting with bernat’s large blanket yarn but…

I found a major design mistake maybe 20 rows in and I want to unravel it all, but I’ve also heard that this yarn isn’t prone to being re-knit like other yarn and I’m worried about it falling apart. Is that the case?

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! Unsure if my practice swatch looks right? Please help

Post image

Im just practicing the basic stitches before I make my first project and am unsure if I’m doing it right.
The yarn I’m using is on the dark side so I tried to colour adjust it to make it clearer. I’m mainly not sure about those vertical lines on my knit side šŸ™

This is just stockinette with some k2p2 ribbing attempted.

Please tell me if I’m doing something wrong and how to fix it!

look what I made Purl Soho Weekend Tote - lots of trials and tribulations

Post image
96 Upvotes

The second piece I’ve knitted (ever!) it will be lined with fabric to make it sturdier, as I used a cotton yarn that I suppose isn’t meant for bags haha

It was hard! I learnt new skills and lots of patience, it took me a long time to knit with breaks in between as well as going back to fix mistakes - and still in the end there were mistakes and some wee holes that needed covering up as well as still figuring out how to keep consistent tension. Otherwise I’m proud of the fact that I got it done at all; especially as a lot of it was me figuring out the pattern by the written instructions, which I haven’t done before, but thankfully it was very accessible :)

The yarn I used is the CasaSol cotton yarn and I used about 2.75 skeins for the large version of the tote. I’m not going to lie, I kind of disliked knitting with this yarn - it got easier once I switched to metal needles but the yarn constantly unwound and had me missing little fibres and such that now stick out in little thin loops here and there; very annoying!!

Link to the tote pattern is here if anyone is interested, it’s free!

P.S. if anyone has any tips on weaving in the ends and ensuring that the little knots you make don’t poke out too much, pls lmk!

looking for recommendation Looking for a knitting book to learn new stitch combination (see description)

Hello everyone,

A couple of years ago an italian magazine about knitting came out with 2 books that basically are a collection of hundreds of knitting stitch combination (this is the preview of one of the two - for reference), including cables etc.
Basically each page had a swatch and the instructions on how to do it.

Sadly this books went out of print and are impossible to find (even the ebook version of the new edition can only be found of 1 of the books).

I was wondering if a similar book/books exists, even in english. I'm desperately looking for it!

Started yesterday, my version of the Berlin scarf by Susanne Müller, made in Tre Sfere Like Mohair yarn, in this nice chocolate brown. It is the softest and cosiest!

I think it is starting pretty well, the gauge is correct, what do you think?

It knits quite fast thanks to the 7mm needles, thankfully šŸ˜…

all things knitty What do you say when a friend asks you to knit for them?

*Wow, this is a popular post! I really appreciate that everyone on this sub is so kind and thoughtful. I’d say almost 50/50 on if people knit for friends or not, and appreciate all your nuanced thoughts!

I grew up knitting and got back into it a couple of years ago. I’ve knit for myself and also knit a sweater for my husband and my brother. I knit realizing they may or may not always wear the item, and I was ok with that.

Recently, I helped mend my friend’s partner’s vintage sweater, which was so fun! I enjoyed doing that project especially knowing the item was sentimental. These friends were really kind and excited about it but they are kind of shy and we are newer friends.

The other day, my friend said off hand that she should hire me to knit her a sweater. I definitely had a rush of thoughts about that lol but also am not necessarily opposed? My immediate thought was I’m not going to ask her to pay thousands for labor and I could see it being a fun project to knit her a (simple) sweater if she buys the yarn, so I said that and sent her some pattern ideas. I do think it seems fun to help her pick yarn etc. I know I’d have to go into it with that chill mindset, but still part of me is not sure I want to waste my precious knitting time one someone else… I’m not sure she would bring it up again / push me, so I probably won’t either which might be kind of strange but idk!

Always an interesting convo…

looking for recommendation Relationship rough patch. What kind of project screams "I love you" to you?

Hi all,

I've been going through a bit of a rough patch in my relationship. We love each other so much, but lately we end up in useless (little) fights. It's draining. But the details aren't important here.

--

EDIT: I see a few 'more than a gift is needed' comments. I appreciate that :) I didn't specify in the original post, but yes, we are doing more than knits and gifts to resolve this. Without turning this into r/GirlKnitDiaries ;) we're openly and honestly talking through the issues, and finding out the why's and the how's of what has recently been happening and both stepping up to fix what's currently not working for us.

--

I want to show love through knitting. I've knit him scarves and beanies before. He very much appreciates those, and he can't wait for autumn/winter to come round again to wear them with pride. It's very cute.

Now I want knit him another thing, but I'm a little lost on what. Now I know you don't know my partner, but what kind of project screams "I love you" to you?

I've considered a blanket, perhaps for the two of us to snuggle on the couch. Maybe with a pattern or done in double knitting for extra squishiness. I know this takes forever, but it's also going to be forever being together so that's okay.

I've also considered another beanie & scarf, possibly including matching fingerless gloves (he likes those, I've never attempted them). And I want them to be pretty, timeless.

I'll take a whole bunch of other ideas too!

Its ugly and I don't care. I tried color work for the first time ever and managed to end up with a result that kinda.... looks like the pattern. Hoping if I make 25 more of these guys, it'll look better someday! I did mess up reading the pattern towards the end, i.e hockey stick is dissipating but im still quite happy it turned out legible!

(YES this is from the good ol hockey pattern... no i won't make the sweater until this comes out better)

(Ignore the horrid border i just wanted to be done)

So, my beloved wool turns me into a melting beast at this particularly delightful stage of life! I live in and then out of and then in cardigans, but my wrists and hands get chilly. Buuuuuuuuut, I still want to be able to knit. So here is my answer - Jumperless Sleeves!

Pattern: Jumperless Sleeves by Alice in Knittingland
Yarn: WYS fleece
Needle sizes: 3.75mm and 4.5mm

And designed to be achievable by ambitious new knitters :)

Why would you charge this much for this?! I could knit this for around 20 euros, Maybe less if I look for a good yarn deal. It is machine knitted too. I know they have to make profit but this really is crazy in my opinion....
