Rant I hate the Italian/tubular cast on

I hate it so much. It's the first time any fiber arts technique has made me cry. I managed to get the hang of the cast on but they always end up soo tight! I'm just practicing on scrap acrylic yarn before i start working on a sweater but fucking hell i hate it!

And before you say it, i did watch the Roxanne Richardson video and it didn't seem any easier to me. I haven't tried the crochet hook method yet but it seems even more fiddly. I just don't understand why the casted on stitcjes are so tight?? After doing the first foundation row it is okay but for a sweater i will need to do a lottt of stitches casted on

In the news Scientific American: mathematicians identified a new knit stitch using, *gasp*...*math*!

Check it out from their site here: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/mathematicians-invented-a-knitting-stitch-that-stops-mistakes-from-spreading/

Long and short of it from those who don't want to read the article: mathematicians identified (and/or invented) a new stitch that would prevent laddering in knitting! I thought this was pretty cool, so I thought I'd share 😊

Discussion Should I unravel this blanket?

Soooo. I have been working on this for months. I want to knot a full sized blanket. I am slow, and not a great knitter lol. However, this is full of holes, pulls, and i list track of the count/ pattern long ago. Now I know about tools like stitch rings to keep count and I am a bit better with my technique, I was thinking of unraveling and starting again, because it feels like a waste of yarn. Idk. What do you think?

Tips and Tricks Which cable locks should be used for jumbo knitting needles larger than 20mm?

I’m using 20~25mm Addi needles, but the work keeps slipping off the needles while stored inside the project bag and I couldn't find a jumbo size point protectors, and while I tried using large clips or rubber bands, they wouldn't stay securely in place on the needle.😭Does anyone have any good ideas?

Rant Italian / tubular bind off makes me want to scream and tear my eyes out šŸ™‚

Edit: I haven’t gotten around to answering all the comments yet but I’ve read them all and I’m incredibly grateful you all took the time to give me advice, what an awesome community!

I know everyone loves it but I just can’t with Italian bind off. I’ve tried it so many times and idk if it’s because I’m a left handed knitter or what but I just can’t wrap my head around it. It’s never stretchy and just looks like a jumble of messy knots on top of my rib and makes it flare out. It’s a mess. I just ā€œcast offā€ a collar and hated it so much I cut the whole thing off.

For context, I knit combination (at least I think that’s what it’s called) so when knitting flat I knit through the back leg and do a lazy purl. When knitting in the round I knit through the front leg and when I purl in the round I purl through the back leg to keep my stitches open, meaning my 1x1 rib is a weird combination.

Does anyone have any stretchy and neat rib bind off suggestions that don’t make me want to throw my knitting at the wall?

Thanks!

Work in Progress Does this sleeve join look as wonky as I think it does?

Hi knitters! I got like 95% through knitting Jessie Maed's Diaphanous Raglan like 4 years ago or something, then ran out of steam on the second sleeve and never finished it.

There's a very good chance that I'll be frogging it anyway (I'm pretty sure I cast off the body too soon and it's going to be too short even after blocking, plus yknow... I was just getting back into knitting when I started it and it hurts a bit to look at how wonky some of the stitches are) but I'm curious about the bit where you start on the mohair sleeves. Would the stitches where they join always look stretched like this?

From pictures I see on ravelry, it looks like to some extent yes, there will be stretching at the join, which makes sense - I just remember really struggling to do this part (I learned a lot of new techniques as I went through the pattern, with varying success... Picking up stitches being the shakiest). I don't remember exactly what I did, but I do remember having a "fuck it" moment and just doing my best, which is a bit ominous lol.

I'm wondering if there are ways to mitigate those stitches stretching, and/or if done right, might they at least be more even? I haven't worked with lace weight mohair except held double with another yarn aside from this project, so I assume it feeling crazily delicate and being paranoid about ripping those sleeve joins off when wearing a the sweater is normal...? Or is my uneven stitch picking up part of that fragile feeling?

Thanks in advance!

Anybody know what this is and how to fix it? The pattern had called for one round of purl and then return to a k1p1. Everything looked normal until started the k1p1 round. Thanks!

It's Sunday, I have a sore throat but I am still not too sick so I am knitting instead of going for a walk.

I am working on my Whistler hood, and getting close to finishing. It will be nice to wear this winter.

Discussion Looking for cardigan video recommendations

I am looking for some cardigan videos by people that have actually knitted the cardigans. So far I find people who are knowledgeable knitters recommending cardigans that they find on ravelry, but who have not actually knitted them. I’d like to find a video with people who have made the cardigans and talk about the construction, tips, how well the pattern is written, is it suitable for beginners? Is it advanced?

Tips and Tricks Can I undo my cast-on edge and pick up stitches to add a new color? (I’m a beginner)

Hi everyone! I’m very new to knitting and am currently working on a scarf. After getting started, I realized I want to add a chunk of a different color to the beginning of my scarf.
I’m struggling with knitting along the cast-on edge, so I was wondering if I could unravel the first row or two of my work and pick up the live stitches from there to knit with my new color.
Would that work, or is there a better way to add a new color to the beginning of a project? I’d appreciate any advice or beginner-friendly video tutorials. If knitting on the cast on edge is preferred, I would appreciate any tips you can share. Thank you!

Tips and Tricks Adding German short rows for neck shaping

Hey all! I'm so sorry if it has been answered before but I've just spent an hour looking on here and on Youtube and, while I understand a bit more the construction of a sweater with GSR, I'm still a bit clueless as to what I should do. I'm doing Rebecca ColĆØre's latest pattern which is a sort of create your own adventure pattern. It is unisex and the back is literally a big rectangle of fabric that's as wide as the stitches you cast on. Last thing, it is a sweater that's done the "old fashioned" way where you knit the back, then left shoulder, then right shoulder, then complete the front panel and then seam everything together (with the sleeves). I want to make it for my boyfriend and I have a few questions:

- It is not meant to have a very refined fit, it WILL be quite boxy (which is what I like), will the boxy shape of the sweater make up for the wider shoulders men typically have? I know when adapting sweaters for men you usually throw in some German short rows so the back of the sweater fits nicely

- So, would you add short rows to shape the neck? If so, do you have Youtube recs? I've searched for an hour and couldn't find anything that was actually explaining in which cases to add GSR and how to decide how many/which stitch interval

I feel like it's also quite treasurable knowledge to have so I'd really like to take this opportunity to take my understanding of garment shaping to the next level.

EDIT: pattern. https://www.rebeccacolere.com/boutique/p/le-marais-eng

Discussion Beginner questions

Hi everyone!
I am new to knitting; as a child, my grandmother taught me. However, I didn’t knit for about 10 years and forgot almost everything. I went to a beginner’s knitting class and am comfortable with the cable cast on, the knit stitch, and the purl stitch. I did a swatch practicing those with stockinette and ribbing and it went pretty well. I am attempting my first project now: the Brigitte Headband by star crossed knits.
Is it normal that the first row feels so awkward? I got through it and I think I did it right. It just felt kinda tight even though I tried to be mindful not to cast on too tight. I’m hoping as I add more rows the yarn will feel more normal in my hands if that makes any sense.
In general, what advice would you give a new knitter?
Thank you!!

Tips and Tricks Tip for Portuguese Knotting Flow

Hello. Like the title suggests, I need help when it comes to Portuguese knitting flow/tension. I keep running into the issue of it either being too tight or way too loose. I’ve switched up how I hold the yarn in my right hand many times and it just doesn’t seem to be flowing through like it does for continental. I’ve also tried the yarn behind my neck, but I prefer it clipped. I don’t have a specific Portuguese pin so I am using a binder clip with the yarn easily able to flow through it. Yarn is Cascade 220. Suggestions?

Help - equipment Advice on small size circular needles set?

Hello! I've been knitting for about a year now, on the KnitPicks "Prism Aluminum Options Interchangeable Needle Set" and I enjoy these needles a lot. I want to start trying some finer gauge projects, like lace, socks, lightweight tops and sweaters etc, but am finding that interchangeable needle sets below size US 3ish are limited. The KnitPicks one has horrible reviews on the cables; I've unfortunately accepted that any 'mini' set I get won't have compatible cables with the ones I have now.

I've tried some fixed circulars at my local store, and discovered that I really dislike wooden needles, but I also didn't like the tiny interchangeable Chiagoo set I tried - for some reason they were really loud for me and I knit at movie theaters a lot.

Does anyone have a small size interchangeable needle set they love? I'm looking at the KnitPro "Stelo Petite Interchangeable Circular Needle Sets" as a tentative option, but there are very few reviews of them.

Thank you for anyone who has advice or a set they love!

Discussion Trying to choose between patterns šŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļøšŸ§šŸ¤©

Looking for some advice - to pick my next project! Wanting to knit a beginner friendly- but still add an extra ā€œskillā€ not too many new skills but one more, or just knit an easy one.

I ā€œthinkā€ im an intermediate beginner. I can do increases(M1R,M1L, KFB) decreases(K2tog, SSK) German short rows, sleeves (with my shorties), picking up stitches(some of these techniques I learn by knitting the Ivy top by petite knit, Blouse No.1 by my favourite things), and I’ve done some lace work (with the Agnes tee).

For my next project I’d like to challenge myself a bit more, and maybe get into color work (stripes) or just do a cute sweater pattern (it’s fine if it’s another raglan- but something a bit new)

So I want to knit a sweater for my nephew, and maybe eventually knit a matching sweater from his for my sister. So I’d like there to be a junior and adult version!

The sweaters I’ve collected that I like the style of, and may want to knit are ( that have junior and adult sizes) are:

1. the Rolled raglan (junior) for kids size 5-6 by Jules Eterfield

2. Frankie Sweater (junior) size 5-6 by Petite Knit

3. Roomy Raglan (junior) size 5-6 by Jules Eterfield

Also, if I picked the rolled or roomy raglan’s - can I make them with stripes? Even if the pattern doesn’t call for it? I think yes but wondering if there are any things to consider.

Ok thanks so much! Let me know if you’ve knit any of these or have any advice:)

Hello all! As the title says I’m a Newbie at this! This is my first ever time knitting and I decided to start with the Florence Miller step-by-step sweater. I just noticed that I have a hole (maybe a dropped stitch??) going on at the bottom and I’m wondering if I can keep chugging along with this or should I go back and start over if it is going to cause problems down the road?

Discussion Help! Half fisherman’s rib increases ???

I am knitting Ozetta Seasons sweater, which is a raglan construction (1 raglan st) and in half fisherman’s rib. I have now frogged back THREE times because my increases look terrible. I am begging the hivemind for help!!

The pattern increases every row, so both on the purl row and the k1b row, and also does increases in conjunction with short rows. Part of my problem is that on every other row, the increase is adjacent to a k1b and I’m screwing it up and making it look so untidy.

This is my first project in half fisherman’s rib, and I almost always on other projects just use lifted increases with no issue.

I tried:
- normal m1L increases with the bar; on half fisherman’s row, this created huge gaps in the fabric
- lifted increases off of the st adjacent to the raglan st, this created gaps in fabric on k1b rows and also looked untidy
- lifted increases off of the raglan st; this had the least issue with gaps, but completely obscured the raglan st and looked very untidy

I am wondering if folks have any advice to make it look tidier. My next test would be with a YO increase but I am concerned about gaps.

Help - equipment DPN set

So I did look for other posts related to the topic but I couldn't find anyone in my situation.

I started sock knitting on dpns a month ago so for that I ordered 3 ginger sets in 15cm (2, 2,5 and 3mm) I realize I don't really need the 2,0mm but i am struggling with only having one set of the others (I am working on socks as a gift and for myself). Also I want to make more hats but I have been hating the last part as I do not enjoy Magic loop and my Stach yarns need a range from 3,5-5mm needles. So for a set I would need a 2,5-5,0mm Set but online I have only found knitpro that makes them and those are 20cm long is that too long? Are there other brands with that size range in dpns in one set? Which knitpro type would you recommend?

Tips and Tricks Christmas stockings - where to start?

Post image

I have never knitted before but im interested in making my own Christmas stockings like this.

I can get the pattern here https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cabin-christmas-stocking-2 but can't fathom if this will be realistic for a total noob.

I'm a visual learner so some videos may help.... but how long would something like this take? Am I off my rocker here?
