Problem with edges Making a cardigan, why are my edges always so uneven?

I noticed this when crocheting a rag, but it’s happening again and I can’t for the life of me figure out why. My chain was 200, but my latest row will end at 196. Yes I know I need to count my stitches but why not only are my edges uneven, but only on one side, and where did those 4 stitches go?

I think for my rag I just basically did 2 stitches in the last one because at least then the edges were even, but it wasn’t the most consistent. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it??

Deciding on yarn/Yarn help what kind of project can you make with poor quality acrylic yarn?

A few weeks ago I bought like six skeins of the cheapest and worst quality acrylic yarn money can buy (I needed it for a project), and proceeded to use none of it. It was for a very specific project with a very specific colour scheme and they all look awful paired with any other colours or alone. Once I've used all this yarn up, I will try to switch to natural fibres, but this requires me to make things with the yarn. What type of projects are suitable for acrylic? (eg. wearables, blankets, plushies...)

How do I... Berry Stitch-having trouble pulling throw five loops. Would a larger hook help?

Post image
37 Upvotes

Is it all in the tension? I’m trying to do a “Berry stitch” and it’s YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through first loop on hook. YO, insert your hook into same space, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through five loops on hook. And for the absolute life of me I cannot get the hang of the final pull through five loops. I’m dropping some or just Yanking it. Should I use my 6mm hook so it’s looser? This is meant to be a baby blanket eventually and I’m not sure I can do this tension and row after row of 5 pull throughs?

Edit: Ok noted I am pulling these way too tight! I want it to be loose and cozy for my baby, but I didn’t want their little hand to automatically rip it apart either. Maybe I’ll find a different stitch too.

Repairing a crochet item How to fix "dropped stitches" in the middle of a finished project?

My mom, (who sews) was given this blanket by a friend who asked if she could fix it. My mom accepted, realized it was crochet, then turned to me, the crocheter, and asked if I could fix it. I have never fixed a finished project before so I turned to you, the good people of this subreddit.

I did a reverse image search and google said it was "the braided puff stitch" im not familiar with this stich and since google AI has become more pervasive I'm a little hesitant to accept that answer right away and would love if someone can confirm that for me.

It looks like there are 3 of these puffed v's (so 6 puffs in total) missing from in between two rows. The yarn they were made of is still attached to the project, ill post a picture of the end more close up. Its stuck but could be undone.

Can't find a flair for this Michael's coupons / clover amour hooks how to get the best price.

I decided I want to pick up some Clover Amour hooks. I am not a regular Michael's shopper. Should I run down tonight to spend my 25% off one item coupon before it expires? Or will I wake up tomorrow and see a 40% one in there? Lol. Lots of crafts store options around if there is a better, cheaper way. But I don't want to risk getting fakes with Walmart online trying to save a buck.

Thanks!

I'm a beginner! Learning tapestry crochet but not sure if I'm doing it right

So im trying to get into tapestry crochet, I saw a couple of videos and have been doing a few small tests

The left one i did with the float method and the right one i carried the yarn

The second pic is the back (I cut and weaved most of the floats cause they were causing tension, the last pic shows the original float back)

I thought the carried yarn would look neater both front and back (specially cause i found it harder and annoying af) but comparing both results i prefer very much the float

The carried yarn looks choppy in the color change borders and I can see the other color in the back though the main color

Is this a kinda expected result or am I doing something wrong? I tried to relax my tension (I tend to do it tight) and pay attention to the way I carried the yarn but I dont see how it can be done in order to not be visible between the front color

I used 4mm hook with 100% cotton yarn if it's relevant

Magic ring/circle Magic ring tail ripped off! I need ideas for how to save this.

I’m working on Jennifer Olivarez’s Double Wedding Ring blanket ( https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/double-wedding-ring-blanket ). This is a sample to prepare for making the real thing sometime next spring. I’m using Blue Sky organic cotton and the magic ring tail ripped off while I was pulling the center closed! Each motif takes so long to make I’d like to salvage this if possible, I was just going to make a little sampler.

Wearable help Realized half way through a hat pattern that I’m using the wrong weight yarn 😭😭 Can I adjust the pattern for the size yarn I have?

Post image
• Upvotes

I decided on a whim this morning to make a witchy mushroom hat for Halloween (It’s currently Oct 22.) The pattern I’m following is very straightforward and easy for a beginner (like myself) to follow, but after completing 38/47 rows I realized I somehow missed the part where I was using a much smaller yarn than the pattern called for when I tried putting it on and found out it didn’t fit 🥲 Is there any way I can scale the pattern to make it fit without having to buy new yarn? Or should I just look for another pattern for the size yarn I do have?

The pattern: (https://www.craftykittycrochet.com/2023/05/06/rose-witch-hat-crochet-pattern/#google_vignette)

The pattern calls for:
- Size L-11 / 8 mm crochet hook
- super bulky weight 6 yarn (310 yards)
- Gauge: 3 single crochet stitches and 3 rounds using 8 mm hook = 1 inch

And I was using
- the same size L-11 / 8mm hook
- worsted / medium weight 4 yarn

(I did not do a test swatch / gauge)

Can I put more increases in every few rows and achieve the same results? Should I use 2 strands of yarn to try and bulk it up more? Or just keep repeating the first few rows until it does fit? I am very new to crochet so I’m not sure how changing a pattern affects results in the ways I do and don’t want.

Thank you in advance!! ❤️

Understanding a pattern raglan sweater is crooked in the first corner, stitches missing

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hello, I'm a newbie working on my first raglan sweater. I thought I understood the instructions and happily worked my way through several rows. It just occurred to me that the fourth corner is totally crooked 😭 I don't have enough stitches but don't understand why.

Just like the instructions says, I stitched in corner 1-3 (1 esc, ch 2, 1 esc) and in the 4th corner (1 esc, ch 1), the first stitch of each row counts as an esc.

I already searched in this subreddit and googled but couldn't find anything that helped me.

Do you have any tips or solutions please? 🥺

Since I used the German pattern, I also add a screenshot of that.. maybe there's someone german speaking 🙂

The pattern I used: https://hobbii.de/products/hp-1007134-finisterre-sweater

Blocking how does a first timer block a baby blanket with a scallop border?

Post image
6 Upvotes

TLDR: how do I block a blanket with a scallop border?

I’m close to finishing my first (baby) blanket, inspired by this pattern but adapted slightly because I’m using a much thinner yarn so I increased stitch count etc. I plan on adding a scallop border like the original pattern but this will also be my first time blocking a project which I’m a bit nervous about, I’ve been watching 101 tutorials to gather all the tips and right techniques but for some reason, I feel like I read somewhere to block before the border, but I’ve not seen it mentioned anywhere since (that’s if my brain didn’t make it up in the first place 🤪) and in all the tutorials I’ve seen, none of them have had a scallop border and I imagine it’ll be slightly different from a straight edge? If anyone has any tips about the best approach I’d be incredibly appreciative! I planned on asking my local yarn store for advice but I don’t think I’m going to be able to make it for a while and I’d love to have it finished before baby’s arrival 🫶🏽

How do I... Changing color in the round smoothly & without hitches

Post image

Hello - I’ve made mostly blankets in the past and needed something small and fun, so I tried a Woobles squishy and loved it. Now I’m making my own using scrap yarn (worsted weight and plain single crochet). Can anyone tell me a good way to avoid this hitch in the giddap at each color change? I’d love nice clean rows of each color.

Deciding on yarn/Yarn help Looking for yarn recommendations for fingerless gloves

Since I'm outside everyday and it is (finally) getting cold, my hands are FREEZING and I want to make myself a quick project I won't give up bc I really need them lmao

I want to use this opportunity to get to work with something other than acrylic yarn or wool blends, what fiber would you recommend for durable, washable and nicely colored gloves?

I'm assuming I will need like 2 skeins or so and have a budget of 15€

Furthermore, if you have any free patterns recommendations for individual finger holes gloves, I'll be super grateful!

Deciding on yarn/Yarn help Multicolor skeins… will they be too busy in a blanket?

I love the various skeins that are multiple colors (like the Caron cakes) but I’m always afraid to use them in a pattern because I’m worried it will make the pattern too busy. How do you use these skeins? Also is there a way to see how it would look before hand? I tried googling one when I was purchasing for my recent project and didn’t find any finished patterns.

I would love pictures of any finished product you’ve done with these type of skeins to help me visualize it! Thank you in advance!!

Repairing a crochet item Need help fixing baby blanket I've had for 20+ years

Im like 80% sure this is crochet? I was told it is. But it's absolutely falling apart. I know absolutely nothing about crocheting so any tips that are completely beginner friendly would be insanely helpful. I saw online that you can kinda sew the ripped sides together with yarn using tapestry needles? Has anyone here done that? Does it work? Also, is there a specific kind of yarn I should be using for this? I don't need the fix to be pretty. I just need it to hold . I know, it's really torn up at this point. I've just been knotting the loose ends and hoping they'd stay together

Looking for suggestions The ends of my blanket are coming undone? Not sure where I went wrong.

Thumbnail

I think I have an idea of what's going wrong, but need confirmation. This is my very first crochet project, and I'm at a point where I'm starting to weave in the ends. I had gotten maybe 1/6 of a way through one side and noticed some of my ends started to look odd/unraveled; just hanging on by a knot.

As soon as I feel like I've weaved enough of the yarn in, I cut it and gently stretch it out. Am I not weaving in enough for it to properly stay? How can I fix what I've already messed up? Am I doing something else wrong?

Thank you!

UPDATE: Thank you everyone! If I didn't respond to you I still appreciate your advice and I'm taking it all to heart.

This blanket has been quite a learning experience (and continues to be). I bought the skeins used, and I'm not crazy about how the colors came together. So if this ends up being a loss I won't lose a lot of sleep over it. I'll just make sure I don't make the same mistakes on the next one 😁

Wearable help Made to fit cardigan, Malabrigo Rios wet blocking growth guidelines?

I am making a moss stitch hexagon cardigan using malabrigo rios yarn. I'm not really following a pattern, just making the hexagon to size and then I'll make the other half and then sew the two together and extend the sleeves and hem and yada yada.

The problem: I was like "it's made to size, I don't need a gauge swatch!" But now that I'm nearing the end of the first hexagon with a target size of ~48" diameter, I'm realizing that I probably should have made and blocked a gauge swatch because superwash wool is going to want to grow when washed! Does anyone have any rough idea of how much it'll grow?

My hexagon is currently ~11 inches wide (x4 would put me at at 44" chest). Do we think it'll grow up to an inch? More? Less? Add more rows? Frog rows? Any wisdom is appreciated.

Wearable help Am I okay to wash my crochet hat on a 30°C cycle, or should I do something else first?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, so I've just finished my first wearable piece which is a winter hat, and I'm really proud of it (there's few things I've found but its my first finished item, so I'm okay with them 😅) I've included some photos so you might be able to tell where they are 😅

Anyway, I used a 80% acrylic and 20% wool blend yarn and the label says warm wash 30°C, short spin - I can do both by using a 30°C synthetics washing cycle on the washing machine and turning the spin speed right down. I can also put the hat into a mesh bag to keep it safe during the cycle. My question is though; is there something else I should be doing first before I wash for the first time, or can I just put it straight in the wash and everything will be fine?

Also, how should I go about drying the hat too please? Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you! 😊

How do I... How do I get my hood to have the generic hood shape like the tutorial I used

Thumbnail

I'm trying to make a crochet hood for a sweater and I found this video on YouTube that showed how to make it, but after finishing it mine looks nothing alike.

So the horizontal length (yellow line) is great and fits my sweater and the vertical length (blue line) is way long compared to hoodies I've bought but it still fits okay.

Now onto the main issue the length of the hood is overall good but the green portion is so thin and pointy, hers is curved and giving a overall hood shape and I don't know why mine isn't, all my increases landed at that top portion I can't figure out why please help.
