I started learning to draw about 5 years ago. Thought this comparison was neat

At the age of 39 I decided to learn to draw, specifically faces and portraits. Lots of ups and downs and hundreds of drawings between these two. Some better and some maybe not, but I thought I would share these two since they are similar enough. Small improvements over time have kept me going and interested. It’s hard to find time to draw every day at my current age and lifestyle but have tried to be as consistent as I can.

Critique 36, Just a little over 1 month of drawing, sharing progress and looking for advice

Thumbnail

Hello!

I started drawing just last month at 36 with no previous experience, mostly following Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.

It has been a great resource for me, since even the simplest doodles were a challenge before.

Currently my biggest challenge is proportions. While I do try and take measurements using my pencil as a guide, it always seems to take several tries with a lot of erasing until I can get the proportions right.

Anyway, just sharing my progress and looking for any advice/pointers for getting better!

Thanks!

Question How do I get more precise with my shading/lighting? I feel like the airbrush is holding me back, what do you use?

Post image

Just finished this piece, right now I am practicing both construction of the face and rendering which I am doing with different references. However I find it very hard to shade or make convincing lighting. I feel like airbrush is the only way I can come even a little bit close. What do you use?

I basically started inktober as a personal challenge, I did not draw from and eternity and I tought It could be fun to do all the month.

I rushed a Little the days,however I think somehow i improved...

However I noticed that now It seems I got some regression... And i am losing the 'magic' so i want to restart from the real basics.

These are the improvements (day 2 vs day 31 vs)

Just Sharing JoJo’s stylized portrait of a friend of mine

I messed up the full figure because I wanted to finish quickly, but that’s the result I gave him. For free of course.
I’m proud because this looks closer to what I feel JoJo’s is, at least in the mangas. Closer, not fully there yet.

Just Sharing Proko art course

I’m finally taking drawing seriously after years of wanting to do so. I bought the how to draw basics art course from proko this week and I’m shocked at how different my drawings look now. I still have a long way to go of course, but I’m so surprised that I can’t sketch things that look somewhat similar to the reference!

When you look at these you can tell I have issues with proportion and texture, as well as shading(which is why I left most of them unshaded😭).

If you look at these and want to give me any tips I’m totally thankful!

Just Sharing My art progress from 2023 to 2026

Thumbnail

Exactly 3 year of progress from September 2023 to October 2026.

None of the arts were traced. If you are wondering why there is a gap for 2024, I rarely drew and even when I did, they were traces just for fun. All digital drawings until September 2026 were all made on phone. At the start of September 2026, I bought a drawing tablet and started drawing on my PC.

I was never really much of a dedicated artist. Sometimes I would suddenly gain motivation and draw a few times a month and then it dies down for a few months. Since I started drawing, I have approximately drawn over 70 individual arts and this is 17 of them.

Obviously am not gonna ask if I improved or not. I clearly did. But were the improvements substantial?

Just Sharing Rendering with graphite

Post image
7 Upvotes

I've been getting better at rendering with graphite lately, all thanks to this tool named "Fumino" I call it "Fuminoli" in English it's called "blending stump" or something like that, it's literally just a small cylinder of compacted paper that you rub on the paper to spread the graphite, but for me it was a revolution, I still have a lot to learn, by no means I'm an expert or anything. Do you use this tool? Or do you have something you want to share about it? I would be happy to hear you out.
