MOD ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME TO R/TUFTING: Important links, information and mega-threads.

Hello tufters!

This is a post for old and new tufters and r/tufting users that will include links to all important Mega Threads and the wiki. Reddit only allows for two pinned posts and this makes it difficult to assist users navigating this information. This post will permanently sit pinned at the top of the sub and should make it easier to identify these threads, and the sub wiki.

Sub-Wiki

The wiki is updated on a regular basis to include new and evolving information to assist in all aspects of tufting. The wiki is over 14,000 words and includes 68 subheadings that specifically relate to the most asked questions and most common concerns raised by tufters.

Important mega-threads:

  • Materials and Supply Master Thread: With over 40,000 members from all over the world, this is the place to inquire about and recommend different location specific suppliers for materials.
  • Buy and Sell Master Thread: All posts regarding the selling of supplies should be posted in this sub, according to the directions outlined in the post.
  • Troubleshooting Master Thread: This is a dedicated subreddit for questions and requests for advice related to troubleshooting.

Some things to keep in mind when posting:

  • Always read the sub rules before posting. This may sound obvious but there are a lot of posts made in the sub each day that need to be removed because they violate the sub rules.
  • Asking for advice on pricing and valuing works for sale. This is something that a lot of tufters seek advice on, however it is difficult to effectively value someone else's work due to a lot of factors that are covered here in the sub wiki. Over the years since tufting has gained in popularity, there is also a growing sense in the community that certain standards and criterion should be met before someone starts selling their work. While this is not the consensus amongst all tufters, it is often the case that newer users asking for advice have not taken this into consideration and the comments of these posts tends to reflect this. Please read the sub rules as posts asking for pricing advice will be removed. Please feel free to include requests for pricing advice in the text of your post and include as much information (as mentioned in the wiki) as possible in order to get realistic advice.
  • Low effort posts. All posts must include a clear and specific title, especially when seeking advice or opinions from other users. As per the sub rules, any post with a vague title such as 'help' with no other explanation will be removed.

As always, thank-you for being here and happy tufting!

This is my latest work and biggest project so far.

Design is by a friend who is a tattoo artist called YTEK, he is known for making some of the most bizarre and original work mixing traditional style and horror body type of stuff.

I made the rug, took me around 80 hours total to tuft, carve and work on the smallest details so it could came out crispy af.

Inspired by H.R Giger's work we bring this bad boy to life.

This piece is 80x50in and it's currently on sale. Hit me up if you want this on your wall.

Newbie Needing Help Free map of beginner tufting workshops. Is your local studio missing?

Post image

Hi all, I build Loopi (the yarn calculator some of you have used here). The question I see most in this sub is ā€œwhere can I try tufting near me?ā€, and the answers are spread across Instagram and old threads. So I spent the last two weeks rebuilding our workshop directory around that one question.

What’s in it now

  • 250+ studios that run beginner gun-tufting sessions, in Europe, the US, Canada, South America and the Middle East. The US list covers 44 states.
  • Every studio is pinned to its studio's street address
  • A page per city and country with the price range and how many sessions are beginner-friendly.
  • Past dates drop off. The Book button goes straight to the studio’s own site. You pay them directly, and I don’t take a cut.
  • Free to browse, no account.

If you’re booking your first session

  • Pick one marked beginner or ā€œno experience neededā€. You start with how to hold the gun and leave with a finished piece.
  • Bring a simple design with a few big shapes, and wear closed-toe shoes. Most studios supply the gun, frame, yarn and glue. Some ask you to bring yarn, and those listings say so.

Here it is: loopi.space/workshops

Two checks:

  1. Are you a creator and is your local studio is missing, or a listing is wrong, comment and I’ll fix it.
  2. If you teach, you can list your studio for free. The page gets ~2,000 visitors monthly.

Happy to answer anything about how it’s put together.

Newbie Needing Help Helpful critiques

Hi all! Fairly new to rug making. I just made this one - I feel ok about it but don’t really love it. I can’t really put a finger on why. I suppose it doesn’t look as smooth? Also, I couldn’t for the life of me, figure out how to carve properly. I use a pair of clippers that I got from Amazon ; I wonder if there are better options?

Any advice / constructive critiques would be appreciated

Also will appreciate advice on what yarn to use to achieve a sturdier look ( I used 100% wool yarn on the white bits)

Hello community! I recently had trouble with my Golden Spider from TuftLove and have this spare gun. I went in to tuft my rug that I was WIP but was left with these lines. At first I thought it was speed difference but am curious what the issue might be. Maybe pile height problems?

Im thinking about starting to do loop pile, I’ve never tried it before, any tips? Advice? Do you still have to trim and carve? And in what situations is it better to switch to loop pile while also tufting with cutpile, like lettering etc, thanksā¤ļø

Newbie Needing Help First Rug - Seeking Help for Improvement

Hi everyone! I finally found a creative outlet I absolutely love. This is my first rug, and am asking for advice on a few specific things and overall guidance. I started with an egg because it is an easy shape to free hand and I needed a rug in my kitchen.

  1. Why do vertical lines show in the finished product? Is it because my line spacing is too far apart?

  2. I shaved the rug down too far while carving (I hit the backing once around the yolk). How can I avoid carving too deep?

Any other advice is welcome!

Newbie Needing Help Carving Question ?

Hello, I’m currently working on this rug—it’s the second one where I’ve done carving while it’s still on the frame. I have a question regarding the top section (the screen area): should I trim it right up to the outer edge? Currently, the yarn extends about 1 cm beyond that boundary. I know I’ve carved the Game Boy buttons right up to their edges, but should I do the same for the top section? If so, why? Could it affect the final result?

Cut Pile Tribal seals galore

Alright fellow Tufters, my last tribal seal got so much love that I am sooo excited to share with you my latest work. Similarly, I was asked to create bespoke pieces for tribal leaders that will be gifted to them during a gala later this month.

For those of you who are new, my name is Lauren. I’m an Indigenous tufter from the Cheyenne River Lakota nation. I started tufting back in 2021 and have never looked back. I specialize in the Lakota star pattern but often get asked by individuals from other tribes to create pieces to gift back into the communities.

In this round there were a total of 11 seals I had to recreate and another individual gift based off a traditional basket design.

Each were roughly 3’ - 3.5’. Truthfully, before taking on this project I had agreed on the quantity before even knowing which seals I’d be creating… only to be met with some of the most complex design work I’ve executed to date.

I’m not usually a fan of doing too much text work but this one was necessary. šŸ˜…

Although I had much to learn and grow from, I love pushing my capabilities and creating pieces that are gifted back to our tribal nation leaders and am beyond humbled and grateful to be trusted with such projects.

I hope you enjoy them! Pilamaya yƩ (thank you)

Advice Spider Problems!!

Hello everybody/community! I am worried. After 15min of tufting I went to feed more yarn through the eye and flipped the switch ā€œOFFā€. After threading the yarn through I noticed the switch was rigid/stuck. After about 5min it flicked back to ā€œONā€ and then 5min into tufting I stopped to do some carving and I noticed the red light was off even when the switch was ā€œONā€. As you can see in the video the switch is ā€œONā€ but no red light indicating so.. whenever I touch the switch the light does turn on but as you can see it doesn’t stay on and is still stuck! Any advice or tips on what may be causing this issue? The gun doesn’t feel hot at all.. it is oiled. Does it have a trigger fail safe if it gets too hot?? I’m very worried..

Progress from my first rug to my latest rug, any advice on how to make sure to get clean little black outlines once you carve. Always feel like when i go to carve if I accidentally hit the black it cuts it all and then it doesnt look right.
