It's been a while since I used watercolor.
How good did I do ?
The first one is the newest painting and the last one is my first painting I did.
I painted them using a picture reference in around 30-40min each.
Thank you.

A little watercolor practice from my holiday! 🎨🌿 I did a lot of painting and tried to practice as much as possible. Still learning, but having fun along the way! 💕

I think I’m addicted. First came the green bird. And then two more — owl & hummingbird. Fun!

I think I should’ve made the water either lighter or darker, something about the tone is too uniform

I revisited this place during my trip and it brought back so many memories!
It’s where I spent countless creative white nights and weekends on the 4th floor atelier (studied 2003-2010)

I'm back at it again trying to learn watercolor. I usually just use plain masking tape to tape the edges of my paper. I had seen videos and such of people using washi tape, but that just seems like such an expensive route to take for that. The washi tape I usually see at the store isn't cheap for how much you get. I recently bought a small 4"x4" watercolor sketchbook, and I went to use it when I was out and about one day, but I didn't have masking tape with me. I *did* have a little roll of 10mm wide washi tape if gotten from somewhere like Dollar Tree, so I used that.
I ended up getting crisper, cleaner lines by far with that washi tape. The problem is, while yes, it was from Dollar Tree, there really wasn't much at all on the roll, so it's still not going to be a cost effective route. I'm looking on Amazon and I'm seeing a lot of packs of like 12 rolls of different colored tape for pretty reasonable prices, however, a lot of them use both washi and masking tape interchangeably as descriptors, or it looks like washi tape to me, but is labeled as masking tape or vice versa. The masking tape I've actually used and the washi tape I've actually used are not the same thing. The washi tape is thinner.
So, I guess I have a couple of questions... First, they aren't the same things right? Second, what do you recommend that gives a nice clean line but is cost effective?
Included a pic of one where I used masking tape and one with washi.

This was something I just had to get out of my system. I'm not too happy with everything, especially the background doesn't work too well. I'd love if I could paint it again better, but I think this'll be it.
The colours are a bit flat, and scale is not apparent. What could I do better in those regards?

The idea was to do a master study with Rosa Gallery of Frederic Church's painting called autumn for an online challenge. The underpainting went just fine and looked promising. Unfortunately it went downhill from there and the paints just don't cooperate and what normally works fine became kind of a mess. Valuable lesson learned... when using Rosa Gallery just stick to a 2-3 layers. I don't consider it lost time, it's a good learning experience. Don't hate the painting either, just not what I wanted and whatever I now do to make it better only makes it worse. Will try again with different paints one day.
