Some questions will not be answered or replied to. As an example: "my game crashes" or "my download speed is slow" is not something you should even really expect an answer to. Troubleshooting and finding the solution to these issues requires a lot more information than simply stating "game doesn't launch", such as detailed information on when the issue started and how you perceive it, screenshots of any errors or the problem itself, crash logs, system specs, etc.

Game & Hardware Suggestions Megathread /r/Steam Monthly Game & Hardware Suggestions Thread.

Welcome to the Monthly Game & Hardware Suggestions Thread!

This monthly mega-thread is meant to contain advice, questions, suggestions & generic discussion on what to play or buy in terms of Games & Hardware.

Do you not know what to play? Want a Steam Deck or Steam Machine but unsure which model is best for you? Did you find a niche game that everyone should try? Wondering what GPU you should upgrade to or unsure about the specs of a computer? Do you want to share your unique experiences and learning curves with a piece of hardware? Can't find the perfect survival sim or unsure which 1 RPG out of the thousands available you should buy? Well this is the thread for you.

Now to make this work best and not just be spammed with generic & useless questions such as "What should I play?" or "What should I buy?", please be in-depth in what types of games/hardware you are looking for and why, and when giving advice it would be appreciated if you're more detailed than "I think X is good".

There are too many games to be able to properly suggest something with no background information, also simply commenting a game title and saying you like the game offers no actual value. The same goes for hardware: Saying you're thinking about buying X or you think Y is good with no other information, context as to why, your unique experiences, etc. offers no actual value or information to base a reply on.

Feel free to ask and discuss freely in the comments regarding games and hardware, whether you want advice on what to play, want to give advice to others on what to play, share a hidden gem you found, experiences you have with Steam hardware, or your review of a piece of Steam hardware. Generic discussions & questions about discounts, sales, events, specs is allowed as well. This is not meant to be a restrictive thread within the designated topics that this thread is for, however it is not a support thread nor is it the place to promote any blogs or curator pages or anything else, subreddit rules still apply.

Discussion Steam's NEW streaming codec - at 4K - tested with Lag/image quality/gameplay tests - PyroWave now on the stable Steam client, streamed to Steam Deck - comparing to Moonlight. What's your setup?

PyroWave is on the stable Steam client! I like it a lot, and I tested it by streaming from PC to my Steam Deck and outputting to a 4K monitor. I used a custom 240 fps lag test timer, a sustained gameplay test, and an image quality test. I also tested it vs Moonlight (Vibepollo/nonary moonlight fork). It's a lot of data, but here are the results!

Lag test (4K60 → Steam Deck LCD, median)

Link Moonlight (HEVC) Steam (PyroWave)
HDMI cable, no streaming 0 frames 0 frames
Ethernet 17 ms · 1 frame 17 ms · 1 frame
Wi-Fi 6E 17 ms · 1 frame 50 ms · 3 frames

Gameplay test (FF7 Remake Intergrade, host logs ingested/aggregated)

Link Moonlight (HEVC) Steam (PyroWave)
Ethernet ~59 fps · 86 Mbit/s · stutter at ~2 min 60 fps · 330 Mbit/s · no stutter
Wi-Fi 6E ~58 fps · 89 Mbit/s · stutter at ~2 min 60 fps · 329 Mbit/s · no stutter

Image quality test (VMAF 0–100, capture control = 94.5, same on both links)

Score Moonlight (HEVC) Steam (PyroWave)
Overall 81 80
Gameplay 82 82
Gameplay, worst 1% of frames 58 78
Desktop text 80 73

Opinion based on the data and the "feel"

For ethernet - I prefer PyroWave even though the frame lag was close - the picture just looked a little smoother and a little better to me! But I was impressed by Moonlight's latency optimizations for HEVC.

For wifi - unless you're really confident in your wireless setup I'd recommend Moonlight's HEVC (or Steam's) for most people you're going to have a better time. I put a lot of effort into improving my wireless network, but I still couldn't get the latency as low as I'd like. But I still prefer the PyroWave picture on wifi

Discussion Mockup of Steam Trophy with the Yellow Added

Thumbnail
gallery
115 Upvotes

I know a lot of people have been saying that the Badge/Trophy should have the yellow color added back to it, so I came up with this rough mockup in GIMP.

The Right Trophy is the exact SVG shape and color gradient as pulled directly from Steam's website using Inspect Element.

The Yellow used is the same yellow as the center of the current/old 100% achievements badge but it gradients down the same amount of change as the blue that steam is using in the new trophy (top blue is #1A9FFF, bottom blue is #1465CF).

I also made slight alterations to the blue pillars in the svg, I assume Steam/Valve was going for the left and right being mirrors of each other but as you can see they are not the same shape.

Image 1 mirrors the left pillar onto the right side, and Image 2 mirrors the right pillar onto the left side. In both images, the Original Steam Trophy is left untouched and is Stock to how it is on the website.

Discussion Never seen this before. DLCs can be released as 'Early Access'?

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

A game I checked out before, Caves of Qud, is coming out with a DLC. But its a DLC that will launch as 'early access'.

The game itself (Caves of Qud) started in early access and it eventually reached 1.0. Now the Devs are creating a DLC for the game, but the DLC itself is launching in 'early access'.

Is that even a thing that can happen on steam? I've never seen that before and don't know how to feel about that.

Discussion Steam’s new screensavers with animated artwork from your library

Steam recently added custom screensavers to Big Picture and SteamOS Gaming Mode. That gave me the idea of having animated SteamGridDB artwork from my library playing while Steam is idle.

Steam Animated Screensaver lets you pick games, choose their animations and install them into Steam. You can prepare a bunch of games at once, change the artwork, add a cover next to the title and keep the original framing or crop to 16:9 or 16:10.

Steam handles playback itself. Once everything is installed, you can close the app and the screensaver works offline. No Decky needed. You’ll need your own SteamGridDB API key to download the artwork.

After installing it, open Big Picture, go to Settings → Customization → Screensavers and select it there. This is a screensaver for Steam, so Steam needs to stay open in Big Picture or Gaming Mode.

There are builds for Windows, Linux, Mac and SteamOS. I’ve mostly tested it on my Steam Machine and MacBook Air, so I’d really appreciate some feedback from Windows and Linux users. The video was recorded on the MacBook Air.

Contributors are welcome too. Animation smoothness could use more work, especially with SteamGridDB artwork that already looks choppy before you put it on a big screen.

PS: The music is “Song Of The Forge” by Scott Buckley

Discussion No more achievement percentage rate

OKAY SO Steam achievements have just had a major overhaul and one of the things is the achievement percentage rate number disappearing entirely!!! POOF, wiped out of existence. I am writing this post because I cannot be happier this happened as I have been one of those ridiculous completionists trying to keep my achievement rate as high as possible (sitting on 88% for a few years now), which often soured my gaming experience. And now I am finally free from this bloody number YAAY! :D I absolutely and completely realise the ridiculousness of this, and it is something I have been trying to actively work on not give a damn, but this new update just addressed it completely :D
