Due to the high volume of very similar posts asking what r/SteamDeck users were playing, this weekly megathread has been created to have a singular place to hold this very frequent discussion and limit duplicate posts. Feel free to share what you have been playing on your Steam Deck or even post pictures in this thread and show us if you wish!

Game Review On Deck Update: Stable 60 FPS Native in God of War III Remastered (Steam Deck OLED)

1.3k Upvotes

I have shifted my setup away from Frame Generation and spatial upscalers entirely.

Running the native Linux AppImage build via Steam Linux Runtime, the game is holding a locked, rock-solid 60 FPS natively:

  • No Frame Generation: Interpolation tools (MAKO / LSFG-VK) are fully disabled, eliminating input latency penalties and motion artifacts.
  • No Image Upscaling / Reconstruction: FSR, LS1, and external scalers are set to Off. The game renders at native resolution without post-processing blur or sharpening passes.
  • Frame Pacing & Performance: By bypassing Proton translation layers and running directly on the Vulkan pipeline, frametimes remain flat at 60 FPS with full control responsiveness.

Important Setup Note (Non-Steam Shortcut Launch Fix)

As noted in the community issue/discussion submitted to u/FelipePrado0's repository:

  • When adding gow3-x86_64.AppImage as a non-Steam shortcut in SteamOS, Steam often forces Proton automatically or locks the compatibility tool.
  • Do not use Proton: Because the AppImage is a native Linux ELF binary, running it through Proton (Wine) causes the game to crash or fail to launch completely.
  • The Fix: Go to the game shortcut's Properties > Compatibility, check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select Steam Linux Runtime.

Selecting Steam Linux Runtime tells SteamOS to launch the binary natively within Valve's Linux runtime environment without invoking Wine, allowing it to boot directly in Gaming Mode.

Software Modding Uncharted 1-3 running on Steam deck via PS4 port

Yes ai has been used, and this is a fork of the windows build that was released 2 days ago. Steam Deck mode has been added to this port to optimize for 30fps on Steam Deck with the potential for higher performance down the line.

I just think this is really cool, because I never thought we'd get these games running on Deck. No games have been confirmed as fully playable as of yet, but so far these are looking much better and more stable than the PS3 versions which the Deck could barely run at all.

I’m putting this up in the hopes that perhaps a decent person found it and checks. I was at gate B14. Boarding a United flight heading for Chicago Ohare. Totally tired and not paying attention. So annoyed with myself.

Although the pic shows Esoteric Ebb, I was playing Isaac at the time.

Tech Support Castlevania Belmonts Curse -- They fixed the stuttering! Make sure you update the game

As of this Friday afternoon, they pushed out an update for a black screen issue for high refresh rate monitors but it also seemed to fix the stuttering issues. I'm running the game at 1080p and getting a very steady 60fps. Occasional dips but MUCH better. Default resolution should run a solid 60 with no dips

Discussion You don't need anything else

After purchasing every single handheld device, including the Xbox Ally X, Legion Go 2, and OneXPlayer 3, I can confidently tell you that the Steam Deck still provides a better overall experience than all of them. I sold my Deck OLED earlier this year; yes, I was being stupid, and now I am back after selling the OneXPlayer 3. These devices are great; however, I couldnt use them for the only thing I bought them for: gaming. I am here to tell you that the grass is always greener on the other side and the Steam Deck still rocks. Don't experience FOMO watching the X20 or anything else. Also I got the steam deck oled just for 300 bucks with dbrand Killswitch. Got really lucky

Question How can I set up my SD to download EVERY available update every night?

Post image

This is so damn annoying!

I was happy when Valve released the SteamOS feature of downloading updates while in stand by. I set it up to download everything "as soon as possible" and yet everytime I'm grabbing my Steam Deck, I have to update my damn games and some are even pending for "this week" rather than the upcoming night. It sucks. I want it to download updates while I sleep so I can play while I'm awake. Is there no way to achieve this?

Software Modding Animated SteamGridDB screensavers on Steam Deck

With Steam adding custom screensavers to Gaming Mode, I had the idea of using animated artwork from my library while the system is idle.

Steam Animated Screensaver lets you pick games, choose animations from SteamGridDB and prepare them together. You can swap artwork, add a cover next to the title and keep the original framing or crop to 16:9 or 16:10.

It uses Steam’s built-in screensaver support. Once everything is installed, you can close the app and Steam handles playback. No Decky needed, and it works offline after downloading the artwork.

Setup happens in Desktop Mode. You’ll need your own free SteamGridDB API key, then you can prepare your games and install the screensaver. Back in Gaming Mode, select it under Settings → Customization → Screensavers.

I’ve mostly tested it on my Steam Machine and MacBook Air, so I’d love some feedback from Steam Deck LCD and OLED owners. The video was recorded on the MacBook Air.

The project is free and open source. If anyone wants to help, animation smoothness could use more work. Some SteamGridDB animations are already choppy, which becomes more noticeable at full screen.

PS: the music of the clip is Song Of The Forge by Scott Buckley

Promotional been developing my game on the steam deck since day one, demo is up now and it's in steam next fest

hey all,

solo dev here. i've been making slots & skulls, a turn-based roguelite where your weapon is a slot machine and you build the symbol pool it can land on.

the deck has been my main test device since the very first build, so the controls, ui and text size were all made with it in mind, not patched in later. since it's turn-based you can put it down mid fight and pick it up later, which ended up fitting the deck really well. there's also an auto mode if you just want to watch a run play out.

the free demo is already up and will be part of steam next fest (oct 19-26). the full game releases on nov 4.

if you try it on your deck i'd really like to hear how it feels, especially anything about controls or readability. still have time to fix stuff before launch.

Hardware Repair Thumb stick broken by careless person

ANOTHER UPDATE (gasp):

It’s useable now. The board and wire are intact and after some “persuasive bending” the key cap now sits virtually flush and has only minor resistance when moving it. This will last me until I can order the new one and has donated his case to prevent further damage.

He’s ordered the part and has said I can pay him back once I’m back on my feet.

Again thank you to everyone. You’re all too kind and sweet. (The blubbering has been upgraded to trying not to cry)

Thank you

UPDATE:
A kind Glaswegian reached out and is taking it apart as I type this to assess the damage and see if he can get it partially useable until I can order a replacement. Hes letting me get it shipped to him and is going to message when it gets to his so I can nip round and get it replaced.

I want to truly thank EVERYONE here for all the amazing support, advice and kind words. It’s been overwhelming and I’m not afraid to admit I got blubbery seeing how many people care, truly unexpected.

Original text:
Currently staying in a homeless shelter and someone wasn’t happy with where I’d been assigned to sleep and threw my bag into the hallway hard causing this, it was loose in my bag as the case got stolen about 3 months ago (was using it to store hold hard drives and I guess someone thought the weight felt right) I really don’t know what to do or where to go. I don’t have a fixed address so I can’t send it to valve for repair. Anyone suggest anywhere / one local to Glasgow who can help out as other than my phone this is all I got.

Apologies if this doesn’t make a huge amount of sense but typing in a panic as I’m currently devastated

Edit: inputs from the stick are still registered, it just keeps getting stuck and I’m afraid it’ll break more.

Edit again:
Need to clarify I don’t have a fixed address as homeless so getting things shipped is very difficult at the moment.

Question For those using the new HelixSR DLSS 3.7, have u noticed lower power draw and cooler temps?

Since I installed it, the steam deck doesn't heat up as much. GPU and CPU temp sometimes doesn't even reach 70° even when playing games like KCD2, The Witcher 3 Remastered, and The Blood of Dawnwalker. The image quality is also good and it generates more FPS than FSR 4.1. I'm so impressed tbh. Framegen keeps getting better and better.

Software Modding HelixSR 1.9.0 (DLSS 3.7) on Steam Deck is unbelievable.

1.6k Upvotes

New version of HelixSR 1.9.0 released today, gives about ~15% more performance than the previous 1.8.1 version. For those who don’t know what HelixSR is, it’s basically a port of DLSS 3.7 for the Deck, which provides a good upscaling quality, closer* to what FSR 4.1.1 brings to the table, at least from what I just tested, with the performance cost of FSR 3.1.

I'm in absolute awe. Those are in-game screenshots I just made using my Steam Deck OLED (no photo mode, no processing at all). I can finally say Cyberpunk 2077 is fully enjoyable on Steam Deck. Runs so good, ~40fps (80hz screen mode) like on Switch 2 but with way less ghosting and sharper.

I'm using Proton Cachy-OS latest and the amazing HelixSR Manager plugin for swapping FSR 3.1 with
DLSS 3.7 alongside OptiScaler. Yes, needs tweaking, but it's so stable it's unreal.

My in-game and OptiScaler settings are on the latest screenshots (in Spanish).

Give it a try!

EDIT:
Check the screenshots without the Reddit's compression here https://imgur.com/a/Zd5xZGg

PSA / Advice You can stream Galactic Racer on Deck for free if you have Prime

It's pretty slick! Add Chrome as a non-steam game, open in gaming mode, log into Amazon Luna, and voila! You'll need to set the controller to a standard gamepad and then it all works like a charm! And uses very little battery since you're streaming to the device!

Software Modding I created an (unofficial) Proton VPN Decky Plugin

Post image
77 Upvotes

https://github.com/acestronautical/decky-protonvpn

It's not in the decky store (yet?) so you'll have to download the zip and install into decky loader with developer mode.

It's still somewhat beta, but it's working for me. It uses the proton-vpn-cli which comes bundled with the com.protonvpn.www flatpak if those words mean anything to you (if not don't worry about it).

Let me know if you try it out, if it works, or what I need to fix :)

Tech Support Hypothetical question about water damage

So let’s say, hypothetically of course, that I put my water bottle next to my steam deck in my bag I take to and from work. And then, remember hypothetically, the water bottle wasn’t sealed properly and then it hypothetically spilt and soaked the steam deck and its case. Unfortunately, and hypothetically, I did not notice it until the next day around 14 hours later and I have no clue when in that hypothetical time frame the water spilt. I think the steam deck was in sleep mode, hypothetically, and I have not turned it on, will it be okay as long as it fully, hypothetically, dries under a heater/fan before I touch it?? Thanks guys, just thinking of any future hypothetical issues that might arise. 😁👍👍🙏

EDIT: it’s been (hypothetically) heating and drying since I first posted it, and since nothing like this even happened to me for real my steam deck is in working conditions, I am pretty sure it died before it got water on it so no power going through it definitely helped me out some how. As far as I can tell it’s working like a charm
