Game Review On Deck Update: Stable 60 FPS Native in God of War III Remastered (Steam Deck OLED)
I have shifted my setup away from Frame Generation and spatial upscalers entirely.
Running the native Linux AppImage build via Steam Linux Runtime, the game is holding a locked, rock-solid 60 FPS natively:
- No Frame Generation: Interpolation tools (MAKO / LSFG-VK) are fully disabled, eliminating input latency penalties and motion artifacts.
- No Image Upscaling / Reconstruction: FSR, LS1, and external scalers are set to Off. The game renders at native resolution without post-processing blur or sharpening passes.
- Frame Pacing & Performance: By bypassing Proton translation layers and running directly on the Vulkan pipeline, frametimes remain flat at 60 FPS with full control responsiveness.
Important Setup Note (Non-Steam Shortcut Launch Fix)
As noted in the community issue/discussion submitted to u/FelipePrado0's repository:
- When adding
gow3-x86_64.AppImageas a non-Steam shortcut in SteamOS, Steam often forces Proton automatically or locks the compatibility tool. - Do not use Proton: Because the AppImage is a native Linux ELF binary, running it through Proton (Wine) causes the game to crash or fail to launch completely.
- The Fix: Go to the game shortcut's Properties > Compatibility, check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select Steam Linux Runtime.
Selecting Steam Linux Runtime tells SteamOS to launch the binary natively within Valve's Linux runtime environment without invoking Wine, allowing it to boot directly in Gaming Mode.
