guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0
old.reddit.comHere’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).
This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.
You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.
Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

LoL on Linux is doomed to fail
In before Rito bans that latest workaround because that's how it is with this company. Just like it happened with old hyperv workaround. Peps need to understand Rito wants to have their rootkit in your box, direct access to your kernel and they won't allow any potential security holes.

steam/steam deck Massive performance difference between flatpak Steam and native Steam (Fedora KDE)
A month or two ago or so when I moved to Fedora KDE Plasma from Windows 7, I tried installing the native version of Steam, but it didn't work, so I installed Flatpak. Today I found out both of them apparently work. Obviously the games installed on Flatpak Steam are not installed on the native version.
I tried using goverlay and mangohud to figure out why my games have subpar performance (Got Lenovo Legion Y520 cheap from a friend, that is full of cigarette ash and smells like weed, so I assumed there's a hardware bottleneck), but couldn't get them to work on flatpak Steam. That was the original reason I tried the other Steam icon on my start menu... However, when I actually tried playing Imperator: Rome, the performance was buttery smooth. Like, insanely smooth. 60 FPS with decent graphics and short loading times, vs. 15 - 30 FPS with all the simple graphic mods and lowest settings that took ages to load. I'm now downloading DayZ again, that didn't go past the menu in the flatpak version without freezing.
Why is this? I already removed the flatpak Steam, but I'm just wondering.

tech support wanted Low FPS 0.1% / stuttering in Control Resonant on Linux (Nobara + 5800X3D + 9070 XT)
**System:**
- Distro: Nobara 44 (kernel: 7.2.10-200)
- Desktop: KDE Plasma (Wayland)
- CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D
- GPU: XFX RX 9070 XT (Mesa / RADV)
- RAM: 32 GB DDR4
- Monitor: 3440x1440 @ 144 Hz
- Mesa / Vulkan: Mesa 26.2.5 (latest stable)
- Game installed on a 2TB NVMe (secondary drive, btrfs)
**Game:**
- Control Resonant
- Proton: GE 11-9 (latest)
- Resolution & settings: 3440x1440, FSR Balanced, Ultra, RT Medium
- Launch options: `PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 MANGOHUD=1 gamemoderun %command%`
**Problem:**
I'm getting heavy stuttering when moving the camera in outdoor areas. This doesn't happen indoors. The GPU stays at 99% utilization the entire time (CPU bottleneck ruled out), but power draw drops significantly when I move the camera from my max TDP of 270W down to 210W or lower during the stuttering. The issue completely disappears when I stop moving the character.
I tested the game on Windows (dual boot) and it runs perfectly smooth.
**What I’ve already tried:**
- Different Proton versions (Proton Wayland, CachyOS, Experimental, and older GE versions)
- Gamemode
- Full system/kernel/driver updates
- Disabling any undervolt or TDP limits
- Disabling VRR
- Lowering graphics settings, disabling RT and FSR
- I’ve read about a kernel parameter workaround that can slightly improve performance, but it affects all games and I don’t feel comfortable applying it just for this one
In the video you can see the issue described above.
Thanks in advance 😆

graphics/kernel/drivers Is CS2 unplayable on linux?
Ive been experimenting with cs2 a little bit, the results are suprising, the normal native linux support for cs2 just simply refuses to load me into a game, wheter its a private practice game, or a public server. Ive tried using other protons like the 10.0-4, its just way too laggy to be considered as playable. The pre-loading shaders (such as the pre-loading vulkan shaders for example) takes too long to load. So the big problem with CS2 on linux is the shader loading. On windows, it loads much faster, but windows 11 is taken over by ai, and eats half of your ram, windows 10 is the best option, but it still takes half of you ram (or 15%). And i wasnt talking about the Steam Deck or the Steam os. What do you think?

tech support wanted Weird issue causing inevitable crashing via graphical freezing in UE games on specific triggers for 4 days
I've been able to run UE games such as Marvel Rivals + Dragonwilds with no issue using Steam ever since the Proton Hotfix Steam patch in June. Randomly as of 4 days ago (around 10/14/26 5:00 UTC) after an update, it has crashed every single time I've run it after a certain period of time.
What ends up happening is that the graphics freeze but the audio still continues. Using Shift + Tab to bring up the Steam Overlay I can almost always cause the game to get past the first freeze, but on the second freeze the game stays frozen until it crashes. UE process crashes first, and then Proton. These freezes almost always occur to the same triggers, but not every time when these triggers pop up will it cause a freeze. This usually occurs after about 15-30min, but the longest period of time I was able to run one of these games was 42 minutes.
Triggers:
Map opening in Dragonwilds
Loading splash art screen in Rivals
Chat opening in Rivals
Card selection in the Infinity War mode in Rivals
System Information:
Operating System: Kubuntu 26.04 LTS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0
Qt Version: 6.10.2
Kernel Version: 7.0.0-38-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor
Memory: 64 GiB of RAM (62.7 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon RX 5700
Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Product Name: X570 GAMING X
Things I've tried:
Uninstalling + Reinstalling Marvel Rivals
Switching between Proton Hotfix, Experimental, and Stable
Uninstalling Proton Hotfix + Experimental + reinstalling them
Clearing caches
Using bare minimum settings
Making sure my system is up to date
Disabling Screen Tearing
I'm able to run other applications using Proton on Steam without issue, it's just UE games.

Steam can't see the extra buttons andgyro after the controller gets disconnected then reconnected
I have a question about controllers in Steam. I have a Flydigi Vader 5 Pro. Steam sees the controller as Generic Xbox controller, and Steam sees all the extra buttons and gyro. The issue that I have is when the controller gets disconnected from Steam (powering off the controller) and reconnecting it back. Steam does not see all the extra buttons and gyro. The only solution that I could do is to exit Steam completely and relaunch it.
Is there an easier way to solve this?
I just want to turn on the controller and game. My workflow is turn on the controller, exit Steam, relaunch Steam then play Steam games.

League of legends playable again on linux
I've worked on making lol playable on linux for a whole month this time based on the macos version and with the help of the https://github.com/darlinghq/darling project which i have improved using ai to make it work with lol.
Check it out on https://github.com/lucannez64/darling-lol
There is not a lot of git history because it was just a collection of patches on my laptop before this week.
Some setups may not work right away
This project has gained a lot of attention, so a few things need to be said clearly.
**1. Maintenance.** I built this mainly as a technical challenge, because everyone kept telling me it was impossible. I don't have the time to maintain it fully. Apart from open issues that block you completely, I will only review and merge pull requests.
**2. Bans.** This project can get you permanently banned, as I have said many times. I am not responsible for your actions. You alone are responsible for launching the game in a modified environment (Darling). If you use it:
- don't cheat;
- don't play ranked;
- don't use your main account.
Even with all of that, you will probably still get permabanned.
**3. Takedown.** Riot may well shut this project down. If that happens, I will publish a fork of Darling containing only the changes made here (none of them breach anything), and release the small script as a gist or similar.
**4. To Riot.** If you are reading this, it means a lot of people want to play your game on Linux and are disappointed that they currently can't. As with macOS for your other games (TFT, Valorant), it feels like Riot doesn't care about a part of its players who have been waiting the longest. If you want to fix this, make LoL Next compatible with Linux, either natively or through a layer like Proton. Yes, that includes your kernel anticheat: Epic Games did it with Easy Anti-Cheat. Follow the trend. This is the year of Linux, and people shouldn't be locked out of a platform or forced to dual boot for a single game.

tech support wanted Simagic wheel on Linux (Debian)
Is there anyone here who uses Simagic hardware on Linux? I currently use all Fanatec gear with the exception of my wheel. The wheel is a Simagic GT Neo connected to my Fanatec base via the qr1 adapter.
While I have been able to get the Simagic software to run via proton, and it does detect the wheel, I cannot get any of the RPM LEDs to work, and changing the lighting pattern also does not work.
If anyone has gotten these to work, I would love a quick rundown. I am considering doing some dev work to get this working (I have a background in Comp Sci), but if there is already a solution that would make my life much easier!

tech support wanted Trying to get my VR headset to work on Ubuntu. Help.
I bought an HTC Vive years ago and am trying to get it to run for the first time since switching to Ubuntu. I've seen a bunch of conflicting sources, some saying that SteamVR is enough to run it out of the box and others listing a bunch of complicated steps to get it to run. I'm no slouch when it comes to tech stuff, but it's all a bit overwhelming.
The PC clearly detects the headset on some level because the open windows change size for some reason when I plug it in. SteamVR says that I need a particular driver installed but doesn't elaborate. I tried installing Envision on the advice of the Linux VR Adventures wiki but it requires Monado and I can't work out how to get that installed.
I would really appreciate any advice here, I feel like I'm out of my depth.

With EAC 2.0 coming out will more games like Warzone or PUGB bring their games to Linux?
Epic Games said that developers will be able to use EAC 2.0 to bring their own games to Linux. I was wondering if this would make games like Valorant, League of Legends, or any of these popular games with kernel-level anti-cheat and similar more likely to bring their games to Linux but with EAC.

guide Drag clicking on linux
For those who don't know, drag clicking doesn't work on Linux by default. However, there is a way to enable it for distros that use libinput for mouse input (which most do). I have written a concise guide to enable it. If you want to enable drag clicking (especially minecrafters) you can check it out. (pls star)

tech support wanted ROG Spatha X
I was looking at MMO mice as I've picked up Aion 2 and i have been enjoying it a lot... however, I don't want to be doing finger gymnastics just to hit all my skills, so I've been looking at "MMO mice" I've found a good deal on an asus ROG Spatha X however I've seen mixed reviews on compatibility and mapping the side buttons within linux, I was hoping somebody out there has experience with this mouse on linux and could shed some light on how well it works. I have also been looking at the Razer naga v3 pro but that mouse cost almost 3x the ROG Spatha X which is hard to justify. If you have any other recommendations I'd be happy to hear them, personally I want a mouse with at least 12 buttons, and I like having a wireless mouse with a charging dock.

tool/utility Per-game Proton selection for Epic's new Linux launcher (Fedora RPM)
Epic's new Linux launcher runs every Windows game on the GE-Proton build it downloads itself, and the UI has no way to change that. I needed DW-Proton for Zenless Zone Zero, so I wrote a small package around the launcher.
egl-fedora repackages the official AppImage as an RPM for Fedora and adds a GTK4 window where you pick a Proton for all games or for each game separately. It finds Proton builds from Steam and from ProtonPlus (compatibilitytools.d): GE-Proton, DW-Proton, Proton-CachyOS, Proton-EM, Valve's Proton. The window opens from the Epic tray menu, from the right-click menu of the launcher's icon, or from a notification the first time a game starts.
How it works: Epic starts games through compat/runtime/<version>/proton in its data directory. The package replaces that file with a stub that reads ~/.config/egl-fedora/proton.conf and runs the Proton you chose. For builds with protonfixes it also sets STORE=egs and the game's UMU_ID, so per-game fixes apply. If the chosen Proton is gone, the game falls back to Epic's GE-Proton.
The RPM runs the launcher on the system WebKitGTK and updates itself from GitHub releases once an hour, since the launcher's own updater only supports the AppImage and .deb.
Limits: Fedora x86_64 only. The project is brand new (first release today), so expect rough edges.
Unofficial, not affiliated with Epic. The launcher and EOS SDK inside the RPM are Epic's proprietary software.

Steam: Is there a way to disable the use of a compatibility tool after the latest Steam update?
It seems the latest and greatest update is forcing me to use a compatibility tool and I do not see an option to disable it. There are a few games that I play that run absolutely fine OTB and the use of compatibility tools degrade their performance.
I tried searching for a solution in the steam settings and it seems I’m stuck with having a tool of some kind always on.
Are there any workarounds for this??
Thanks in advance.

tool/utility Do you guys use Bottles daily?
I first time tried Linux in June this year. There are so many new interesting things to learn, one of them is about playing Windows games on Linux.
I tried some, such as: Heroic Games Launcher, Lutris, Bottles.
All of them are pretty good, but tbh the best to me is Bottles.
Bottles gives me the best performance, even though I run the same runners in other programs, Bottles still give me the best performance - for every games that I tried, from old to newer games.
The defining feature of Bottles—which most people knows about—is that each "bottle" is an isolated environment.
This helps me so much, I can make experiments without touching my old bottles.
I'm currently applying this to make two bottles that used for new games and old games (Windows XP compatibility)
One more thing that I like about Bottles that it has a lot of runners to use.
Do you guys usually use Bottles or like it? I would like to hear your opinions 😄
