So, this has taken almost a year to (maybe) figure out. At first the idea it could be steam deck related never crossed my mind but now I'm becoming convinced it must be. I've got a decent gaming PC, 3090 GPU, runs games well. I've got two monitors, one 2k 165hz monitor and a vertical monitor 1080p just for discord. In the last two years I've played my steam deck a lot more, I've started playing games on both PC and the deck depending what mood I'm in or who I'm with.
I've noticed that almost every game I've played on both devices, it causes my PC to black screen my second monitor, before black screening my main monitor.
This is how it would go:
- Start game
- Play for 10 minutes
- Second monitor begins black screening for under a second, just a blink every now and then.
- this continues for 20/30 minutes but gradually becoming more frequent. (this wasn't an issue as it's just discord)
- main screen starts black screening now, still under a second but makes some competitive games unplayable
Worth noting before I get into it that I did a full PC reset after discovering this issue and with only steam and some of the affected games downloaded, the issue still occurred/is occurring.
So, this started happening on 'GOALS', I initially started playing this on deck but moved to PC. Made the game unplayable due to black screening at important points. No issues on steam deck, just PC. This happened for a few other games I played on steam deck but moved to PC, more recently Minecraft dungeons, even though I never 'played' it as such, I just loaded it up. Finally I've started playing Diablo 4 on steam deck and PC, 3 years after I stopped playing it with no issues, and now the PC version is having these same problems. I don't believe it's a performance issue as my PC comfortably runs these games. I've been playing Wardogs on PC recently which isn't supported for deck, Wardogs is a much more demanding game that GOALS for example but I haven't played tried playing Wardogs on deck...
I'm curious to hear anyone's thoughts as I'm honestly out of ideas how to fix this. My resolutions are correct for each device and I can't find anything online relating to this.
Thanks in advance.
