Now, Steam boots up before my PC.

Jesus...

Calm down.

It's already running before you even hit the power button.

Steam logo is the first thing you see before your pc manufacturer now

Somebody at valve definitely saw Epic flexing their 'faster startup times', and decided to just clear out a few pages of their low-priority error log.

u/Shylo132 1h ago

Gotta let that low prio build up enough so that 300+ backlog clearance looks good on the weekly and monthly progress report. 😂

This is hilarious if they did this because of epic and it's petty ASF I love it.

16

u/boersc 1h ago

Of course it is. It's weird it took Epic to get this pushed out as dast as they obviously can.

u/Steamed_Memes24 40m ago

As mentioend above it was probably planned for later but Epic being morons and wanting to fight over petty shit made Valve go "Aight lets do this." quicker lol.

Competition's good I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Bro steams update came out before Epics announcement, which makes it even funnier since now epics announcement was a lie.

u/skool_101 demz 1h ago

they awoke the GabeN and now there's no stopping him.

Shouldn't have made fun of his yacht by comparing it with a puny speedboat

Or making a sequel to Unreal.

What’s funnier is they were never faster. Valve just so happen to update Steam to launch faster right before Epic made their claim.

"Fixed Vulkan games hanging after alt+tab"
I still haven't tested this but if they have actually fixed it then this is just amaing

13

u/BlueFlareGame 1h ago

u/ScottLovesGames 1h ago

It's kinda funny can't lie

are you fucking sorry?

"Second round" It's like they're subtly referring to it as a fight That has been concluded before the second bell. Love it, it's just dismissive and classy.

The gabening has arrived

I want to be in the headspace of someone who cares how many seconds it takes for their gaming platform to load.

Just for like a few minutes to figure out what being an absolute fuckwad crazy person feels like.

3

u/Yakumo_unr 1h ago

They should fix the overlay DLL's being loaded alongside games even when you disable the overlay for that game. It was noticed because of low frame rate bugs in Destiny 2 that are solved when you prevent the dll's from being found to load.

u/HungryBeardyBBQDude 25m ago

It's so fucking hilarious, gotta love Valve for doing this!

4

u/villainized 1h ago

lmaoo they took that shit personally.

u/Odd-Pear692 23m ago

Was Steam ever considered slow? I swear out of all the launchers I have it’s the one that always performed the best from the moment I boot it up lol

•

u/Fun_Bottle_5308 14m ago

It is, idk where the 10s comes from. Maybe they also count that obligatory Steam update window every time you open Steam? Cuz it felt like 5 seconds to me

2

u/minercreep 19m ago

Dev saw Epic tweet and said "lol, k"

2

u/ilhamhe 1h ago

Thank you, Epic for making Steam better.

1

u/JamesLahey08 1h ago

I wonder if they just delayed things to run after the GUI itself shows like connecting to friends lists and shit like that. Basically just shuffling around the order of how things load

1

u/Chanw11 1h ago

My steam still takes 7+ seconds to open

2

u/oookokoooook 48m ago

what ur specs. mine takes 3-4 sec to open

1

u/Confident-Ship-5062 43m ago

9700x, 9070 xt, x870 tomahawk wifi, steam takes 10-13seconds

2

u/oookokoooook 33m ago

I dont know why mines faster then

2

u/Serious_Office3913 29m ago

How many games are you loading? Mine is 751...takes a minute

1

u/oookokoooook 21m ago edited 17m ago

790 BUT it does include family, I dont know if it affects that

Are you in beta channel?

1

u/Ok_Stand1729 17m ago

Internet speed could also matter. Lots of API requests probably

•

u/whiskyrox 13m ago

1359 games here and mine is now 3-4 seconds as well.

2

u/Confident-Ship-5062 46m ago

mine takes 11 seconds

2

u/ArelMCII 58m ago

Install Epic and see if it takes longer.

1

u/Confident-Ship-5062 49m ago

i will test this soon because the previous update did abolsuetly nothing to my start up time, 11 seconds

Neat! Why did they wait so long to make it less terrible?

23

u/Naive-Database-2888 1h ago edited 1h ago

im pretty sure its not true that they did it after epic bragged about their performance, it was actually before. news articles just ran with that headline

-18

u/ryzen2024 1h ago

Just happens to overlap? We get no improvements for years and they just so happen to do it at the same time?

10

u/spence2345 1h ago

These updates were in the beta for like the last month

5

u/Zensaiy 1h ago

It was never really an issue in the first place, it's not like they never considered to improve the steam launcher, they just fired back at Epic games and there is no way the timing is coincidence, Valve is very capable and it was probably low Prio on their list to fix/improve things, trust me valve will bring world peace to the earth before implementing an actual working anti cheat in CS2, Lol

3

u/HappiestIguana 1h ago

I have never thought Steam launched slow, except on my old-ass previous laptop that struggled with every program

4

u/ImKingFrosty 1h ago

Steam was waiting for the right time to prove epic wrong immediately after they sent the post bragging about launch times

4

u/GalaganCoffee 1h ago

Since when was it terrible?

3

u/Insp_Callahan 1h ago

It was never terrible, they just made it better more or less out of spite

2

u/skool_101 demz 1h ago

bet it this issue was in the backlog for such a long time that they didnt bother with it since the steam lancher was already fast enough as it is before this "speedup wars" happened

2

u/ReDcHaRrY 1h ago

from what I understand everyone at valve works on what they want to work on. so im assuming someone prob saw the epic boasting headlines and took it upon themselves to work on it.

5

u/CampingMonk 1h ago

The speedups for Steam were started before Epic talked about it.

1

u/ReDcHaRrY 55m ago

yeah that makes sense. it was in beta before the headlines.

1

u/oookokoooook 37m ago

it wasnt even that terrible lol

-2

u/yawn18 1h ago

IMO this makes steam look bad. Tells me they could have done this the entire time and just... didnt?

Now I dont actually care about startup times at all when theyre a 5 second difference but at least this prives even some competition is a good thing

6

u/Getz2oo3 57m ago

I mean - when your software just works.... startup times are kind of whatever... They had no reason to care before Epic had to go and make a big deal out of it. Now, I'd like to think they are just doing it for the lulz. Someone at Valve took that shit personally and was like, you know what? Bet.

And here we are.....

0

u/yawn18 45m ago

So my point stands. They could have done it and didnt till competition came. Also the whole 5 second difference was stupid to me to begin with

3

u/Getz2oo3 37m ago

I think you are taking a lighthearted jab at competition a bit seriously with this one...

Valve didn't just wait for Epic to come along and improve startup times by a whopping 4 fucking seconds just to start working on Optimizing their own software....

They are *constantly* tweaking shit.

September 9th, 2026. "Improved Steam Client Startup Performance"

5

u/XxAtroyxX https://steam.pm/2moi65 41m ago

This update was in beta testing for a while even before Epic started their shit regarding startup speeds

4

u/No-Opinion273 1h ago

They update so many other things and steam is the only program that opens on start up. So its always ready to go

4

u/-DementedAvenger- 43m ago

It’s not necessarily that they could have and didn’t, it’s that they probably weren’t really looking into that in the first place until epic decided to highlight it publicly. So the Steam developers probably had a conversation and asked their teams if they could look into it and find anything worth optimizing.

Their priorities were probably just elsewhere.

-4

u/TESThrowSmile 1h ago

Just shows competition is good and Valve got lazy and sat on Steam optimizations until a threat emerged

6

u/jeremyw013 CherrySwiftie13 1h ago

the optimization came out as a stable the day BEFORE epic games announced their launcher. and it had been in beta stages for a while.

3

u/ArelMCII 50m ago

Besides the timeline not matching up the way you think it does, the fact that you think Valve saw faster launch times as a threat is laughable.

Thank you Claude
