Mod author here,
first of all, the game wasnt updated the editor was
second of all, bethesda's plugin system is not version dependent like other games so updates arent capable of breaking mods unless the mods are made in ways that arent offical, like F4SE.

99

u/forestNargacuga 11h ago

Doesn't every other mod require F4SE?

75

u/F4CSEP1 11h ago

Basically 99% of mods dont, just technical ones, the issue is moreso that those technical mods tend to be popular ones that most people use. But litterally everything else doesnt require external tools to achieve it, the CK is a very good tool that bethesda has given us mod authors to create a ton of crazy stuff.

-24

u/No_Tax_Timmy 11h ago

An overwhelming majority depend on it or depends on a mod that depends on it.

13

u/okiedokieophie 11h ago

Not true. Script extender is only required for some things that use code that can't be done in the CK itself, the vast majority of mods are retextures or simple edits, and even excluding them there are way more mods that don't use the script extender. This is true for all the Bethesda games. The barrier of entry for script extender plugins is quite high so naturally there's not nearly as many.

15

u/mrRobertman https://s.team/p/jvct-ttf 9h ago

Yeah I've always found it weird how whenever a Bethesda game update comes around people keep saying that they break all mods. It's been a few years since I've played a Bethesda game, but I generally only have a handful of mods that use the script extender.

And even then, the script extender devs seem pretty quick at supporting the new version whenever there is an update.

"Bethesda doesn't support their games!"

(Releases patch with fixes and content + modding improvements for decade old games)

"Wtf why is Bethesda updating decade old games!'

Yes yes goomba fallacy before anyone says it

u/SeroWriter 4h ago

(Releases patch with fixes and content + modding improvements for decade old games)

What are you talking about? Bethesda do not do that. The next gen update for Fallout 4 fixed nothing, broke modding and introduced more bugs. People complain because the updates don't do anything and break things in the process, it's the worst of both worlds.

6

u/Darkwolf1515 4h ago edited 4h ago

The latest update for Fallout 4 in august increased the BA2 archive limit from 256 to 1024, which is a genuine benefit for modders with large lists, there's tons of complaints about the 256 limit and having to unpack BA2's to get around it. The latest skyrim update also had some stealth bug fixes

https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/1vuoeaw/comment/p54wxhr/

Yes it sucks that script extender based mods break, but those aren't officially supported, whereas the ones made with only the creation kit tend to never break.

1

u/SeroWriter 4h ago

Have you consider that maybe this isn't about you? If an update breaks every script extender mod and you don't use script extender mods then obviously it's not going to affect you. What part of that is confusing to you?

"It's weird that these people in a different situation to me are experiencing a different outcome..."

5

u/MistSecurity 7h ago

updates arent capable of breaking mods unless the mods are made in ways that arent offical, like F4SE.

Didn't the Anniversary update completely break every mod?

1

u/logicearth 7h ago

No. It did not break every mod. Only SKSE mods broke and they only needed to wait for an update to restore them.

56

u/Tuskin38 11h ago edited 11h ago

It's a creation kit update, not a game update.

Mods are fine.

16

u/HistoireRedux 11h ago

Its bethesda im sure they can find a way to "break" mods. And by break i mean the mod somehow stops working as intended if updated on the new creation engine.

5

u/LiveLaughLob0t0my 8h ago

Not how creation kit works….

2

u/shazy5808 59m ago

Updating games should be optional

It shouldn't be forced upon to go to new version I know you can install older versions in some games on Steam but again when update drops you are forced to update and break your mods

217

u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 12h ago

Someone explain, I’m outta the loop

459

u/stronkzer 12h ago

Every single time Bethesda updates Fallout 4 and Skyrim, pretty much all mods break and devs have to rework them.

24

u/Arelias_ 11h ago

But they didn't update the game. Lol. Just the creation kit

1

u/Keranan37 2h ago

The anniversary update for fo4 only changed the UI of the stupid creation club and it broke every single script mod for the game lol

1

u/Arelias_ 2h ago edited 2h ago

That has nothing to do with the creation kit updating? It's a separate application that's only installed by mod authors or people wanting to port mods to console.

107

u/WeirdAssBeings 🍆Femboy gamer🏳️‍🌈 11h ago edited 11h ago

This is why I barely play the games anymore, I should not have to fucking stop updates and downgrade just to keep my mods working.

49

u/Snoo_75138 11h ago

Don't worry!

It's not like the mods are the MAIN THING keeping their ancient games worth playing?

Why would they refuse to release a new Fallout or ES for a decade, then keep breaking mods? That would be silly (and disrespectful) now wouldn't it?

-12

u/thexcat 11h ago

You make it sound like some Herculian endeavour clicking three boxes 😭 God forbid you don't play with your big titty mods or roll back your version, Jesus Christ

10

u/WeirdAssBeings 🍆Femboy gamer🏳️‍🌈 11h ago edited 11h ago

God forbid Bethesda stop touching their money milkers after 14 years and 10 years😭🥀

"But it shows that Bethesda cares" yeah about their SHOP and their MONEY🤑

Is it the worst thing in the world? No, but it's annoying enough to personally put me off every single time.

Also I'm gay, I would have a big dick mod thank you very much🥀

On a real note tho, I come home from work, i'm like 7 hours in modding my gane before even playing the game, go to bed, wake up and wanna Play and then I see an update and have to downgrade and shit cuz I dare committed the sin of forgetting to turn off auto updating.

Shut turns me off instantly and ruins my entire mood and makes me delete my entire mod list.

2

u/Fletcher_Chonk 10h ago

I still like touching milkers at 23 years old.

-6

u/piszczor1324 11h ago

Yup. And Bethesda purposefully makes downgrading painful. To the point where after recent Skyrim SE update I found return to LE easier and more pleasant.

5

u/Rumplestiltsskins 8h ago

Downgrading is incredibly easy wdym? Get a downgrader and it does it for you in like 3 minutes.

9

u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 11h ago

Really? Ive been playing Fallout 4 for years but never encountered any problems.

13

u/Elarisbee 10h ago

It’s because you’re most likely launching the game correctly using the script extender and not blindly clicking play on Steam.

Also, 99% of the time “mods don’t break”, the script extender team just has to update things on their side and that usually takes a day or two, if even that.

Edit: Or, like me, you don’t use script extender mods, so an update is never an issue.

4

u/Elarisbee 10h ago

If your mods breaks with updates, then why aren’t you launching the game using the script extender .exe?

What’s so difficult with setting Steam to “Update on Launch” and then just not clicking the play button?

1

u/Ysilla 1h ago

Or you can just set one single file to read only, and then it even works through Steam.

6

u/DudeNamedShawn 11h ago

None of the mods I have made have ever needed to be updated because of a game update. It is mostly just mods that require the script extender that will break, and more often then not only the script extender itself needs to be updated.

3

u/i727l 8h ago

only if you’re dumb

5

u/Tuskin38 11h ago edited 11h ago

This is just a Creation Kit update though, not a game update.

Mods aren't broken.

-1

u/shawn1213 11h ago

Also with the TV show update they actively broke the progression of the game and throw super high level enclave enemies within eyesight of low level main quest areas like right by kellogs base

-8

u/ConditionPleasant902 11h ago

Hell they break the games everytime they release an update

9

u/Tuskin38 11h ago

They break script extender mods, not the games themselves.

7

u/F4CSEP1 11h ago

Mod author here, the Creation Kit is the editor that allows people to make mods, bethesda updated it and everyone is screaming and crying because they think it's an update for the game and they think it's going to break their mods because they can't read that it says "Creation Kit Update"

5

u/Tuskin38 11h ago

the Creation Kit (mod tools) was updated, people are overreacting and unnecessarily panicking and thinking it's a base game update.

3

u/FaylenSol 9h ago

Script Extender is a popular mod that many popular mods depend on. As a feature implemented by the developer of Script Extender it checks game version on launch and if it doesn't match it refuses to launch.

This means anytime Bethesda changes the game version script extender, by design, refused to launch until it is updated. It can take the developer of Script extender hours to a week to update it.

This creates a cycle where people blame Bethesda for updating their game when it is a design choice of the developer of Script extender that things function this way.

0

u/Ivy_Rogers 11h ago

Also, fallout 4 is old now and most mods won’t be updated because… yeah it’s been a while now and most modders do not play anymore or do not mod anymore

3

u/F4CSEP1 11h ago

Mod author here, I still play the game and mod it. idk why you're projecting on us.

1

u/Ivy_Rogers 10h ago

Since you’re all modders ok

92

u/DaughterOfBhaal 11h ago

Guys, this is an update to creation kit. Not the game itself.

That means the tool used for creating mods got updated.

46

u/hoaxlayer 11h ago

But then how am I gonna get upvotes by hating on Bethesda and repeating the same crap that every other redditor says?!

-38

u/m1s0ph0n1a 11h ago

Search up on it, it screwed the mods again.

30

u/Tuskin38 11h ago

It hasn't.

5

u/DaEnderAssassin 64 6h ago

So explain why updates to unreal engine don't break every game made with it then.

-26

u/JaySlays-Tech 11h ago

And people are pissed that it’s going to break all their current mods.

27

u/Tuskin38 11h ago

It's not going to.

-29

u/JaySlays-Tech 11h ago

It’s almost like a majority of the other comments here disagree with you.

25

u/Tuskin38 11h ago

Because they lack reading comprehension and think it's a game update lol

-30

u/JaySlays-Tech 11h ago

Except they all mention their “mods”.

19

u/Tuskin38 11h ago

Most of them are probably just jumping on the complaint band Wagen.

-27

u/m1s0ph0n1a 11h ago

man go on community section on the game on steam and look at the people currently playing that ran into problems. its not a game update no but it IS breaking peoples mods. stop this bethesda glazing or whatever it is you're doing

12

u/1ZillionBeers 11h ago

No, they’re not.

Why even lie?

10

u/Tuskin38 11h ago

The Creation Kit doesn't touch the main game.

They're probably memeing.

You can even look at Steam DB, the last Fallout 4 update was in late August.

11

u/okiedokieophie 11h ago

Creation Kit isn't able to even do that lmao. Have you ever used it before?

9

u/Tuskin38 11h ago

man go on community section on the game on steam and look at the people currently playing that ran into problems.

I'm not seeing any posts about this 'update' breaking mods on Fallout 4.

3

u/Tranquilizrr 9h ago

It literally can't change the game in any way like this lol. Do you not know what the creation kit is?

0

u/BoxOfDemons 10h ago

Have you seen this thread? Lol

0

u/JaySlays-Tech 2h ago

It’s crazy how many downvotes I’m getting from people who either:

A: don’t even play the game and just wana shit on the series.

B. People who don’t even play the game but just wana shit on the company.

C. People who just wana talk shit to feel special

D. People who just wana see their name on a forum and hope they get upvoted. Which I guess ties into C.

21

u/ItsHallGood 11h ago

..... Isn't that just the CK and not the game?

20

u/F4CSEP1 11h ago

I love how many people cant read because it clearly says "Creation Kit Update" right there LMAO
Patching the editor isnt updating the game you goobers lmfao. like c'mon, how are you guys seriously falling for this?

2

u/eadgar 10h ago

People just don't trust Bethesda to not break everything every time they update something.

52

u/vine01 12h ago

aaaaaaaaand this is why i uninstalled f4 and am never coming back. i have few hundred hours in it, not much compared to anybody else. this year in spring i started new char, i wanted to actually finish the game for once.

and then they came with the update in summer or so, and it broke tons of mods of course and i said fuck you bethesda. never more, never more, never more.

glad i was not broken by this update you posted.

39

u/MoonAttempt 12h ago

I mean you could just downgrade the game and disable updates completely by making the appmanifest file of F4 read only.

-8

u/vine01 11h ago

i know i could. but i won't. morrowind/open mw is better anyway. better rpg, better open world, better. just better.

im gonna bark at a closed gate, but bethesda could treat updates that break mods (that make their games better) as a communication strategy that informs players and maybe.. just maybe utilize the experimental and testing and beta branches, until things settle down again, mods get updated, people adjust and then you make those beta/experimentals offic?

or not.

10

u/m1s0ph0n1a 11h ago

Bethesda: or not.

-5

u/vine01 11h ago

its about money after all, nothing less. the updates were as far as i can tell, made to cater to some new creations club shit. nothing really happening with the game as such. no bug fix no quest fix no nothing but MMM milk moar moneyz.

6

u/RollingSparks 8h ago

Bro just run the downgrader ffs you install 200 mods but downloading 201 is too much and you'd prefer bethesda to postpone patches until EVERY mod author has updated their shit? Run the downgrader its so fucking simple 😭

14

u/Tuskin38 11h ago

It's a creation kit update, not a game update.

Your mods are fine.

-1

u/vine01 11h ago

i hope you're right. for sake of those that still play f4.

11

u/Arelias_ 11h ago

It literally says creation kit update on the steam post title. I swear most people can't read that in this comment section 😭

5

u/Fletcher_Chonk 10h ago

don't fuck with steam users, we can't even read

-2

u/m1s0ph0n1a 11h ago

Ye, i know what you mean. reason i stopped playing was cause i just could not be bothered anymore. shame.

wake me up for fallout 5

0

u/ConditionPleasant902 11h ago

You assume there will be a fallout 5?

-2

u/m1s0ph0n1a 11h ago

Copium?

9

u/Toonalicious 4h ago

Its funny how rimworld changes engine n the mods still work

8

u/lilfeccibrae 3h ago

are you comparing Bethesda to actually competent developers

0

u/AdministrativeCable3 3h ago

When Bethesda updated their games, nearly all mods made with the official creation kit (mod kit) worked fine. Only the minority of mods based on unofficial hooks (script extender) broke, most only for little bit.

5

u/FlashPone 10h ago

Gamers when the most basic and predictable downside of using mods happens:

3

u/RollingSparks 8h ago

Gamers when you tell them to download a mod (downgrader) to make their mods work:

5

u/i727l 9h ago

why is it so hard for people to disable automatic updates and launch from the f4se ? literally the only 2 things you gotta do

5

u/RollingSparks 8h ago

The even crazier part is even if you forget, you can just downgrade. "Where is this amazing downgrader?" Oh its hidden away somewhere no one goes..... nexusmods. Yeah, the same place you get your mods, you get the downgrader. It literally takes like 3 minutes to downgrade.

4

u/i727l 8h ago

yeah these people don’t know how to actually mod

1

u/Ysilla 1h ago

Or set the app manifest file to read only. This both disables updates AND allows you to run it through Steam if you want to.

2

u/Hans_the_Frisian 11h ago

Funny just a few hours ago I had to deinstall Skyrim because I couldn't get my current Mods to properly work with the resolution of my new Screens.

And I was contemplating if I try modding Skyrim again or install F4 and install mods. I decided to go with Skyrim and it seems it was the right decision.

11

u/Tuskin38 11h ago

It's a creation kit update, not a base game update.

0

u/Hans_the_Frisian 11h ago

Ah good to know, I just get panic attacks when Bethesda updates games because it breaks mods and introduces new bugs.

4

u/Zakki0 11h ago

New bugs because you install 100 useless mods. Definetely Bethesda fault.

1

u/Hans_the_Frisian 10h ago

I don't complain about bugs caused by my mods, that's my fault and my problem and I will spend time to actually try fixing the issue.

3

u/Elarisbee 11h ago

If updates are breaking your mods, it means you either have Steam set to auto-update (not update on launch) or are launching it from Steam.

Launching the game using the script extender .exe prevents Steam from updating the files and therefore the script extender doesn’t stop working.

At this stage it’s been years of people saying this, and Bethesda now announces updates in advanced. There’s very little left they can do now to help people with mods.

1

u/Hans_the_Frisian 10h ago

That is true and since the update Bethesda did during the airing of the TV show I learned about it and use this method. Though twice now I had the issue of doing a clean install right after an update and having to do the whole downgrade thing for the Mods that havent been updated to work.

1

u/s0cks_nz 10h ago

I mean they broke Skyrim recently too. Had to downgrade my new install because half the mods don't work on the latest version.

4

u/Thornescape 9h ago

A "Fallout 4 Creation Kit Update" is an update to the "Fallout 4 Creation Kit", not an update to Fallout 4 itself.

Personally, I only use the downgraded versions so updates don't affect me but this will only affect people using the Creation Kit.

4

u/Izak_100 4h ago

Reading these comments makes me realise a lot of Reddit lacks basic reading comprehension

1

u/anor_wondo 9h ago

Turns out Fallout 4 VR being just abandoned in a broken state was a blessing in disguise

1

u/aVarangian 5h ago

oh for fucks sake

I've been waiting for months for the 3rd time in a row for mods to get fixed up and now Todd fucks it up again. It has been a year since I started setting up the game and I haven't been able of playing it yet because they keep messing with it, fml

edit: phew, they didn't touch the game itself, just creation kit

1

u/Misomuro 5h ago

Time to break the game again.

1

u/FirstDayPlaying 4h ago

Turn off auto update and launch via a different method. That’s been the standard guidelines for a long time.

1

u/Strong-Albatross-350 2h ago

Me when Bethesda update a game

•

u/HARRYYUYU 5m ago

NICE

1

u/oishipops 8h ago

i just spent hours downgrading my f4 to replay fallout london, i KNOW their pain. had to reinstall too because i fucked up at some points, steam really needs to allow us to choose what version of a game we'd like to play

1

u/CrystalDeath_uwu 8h ago

Meanwhile rimworld switches engines and mods still work fine lol

-1

u/logicearth 7h ago

The same is true for Fallout and Skyrim, if those mods do not use external script extenders that inject code into the game. Normal mods created using the Creation Kit are not affected by updates.

Mods for Skyrim LE work perfectly fine on Skyrim SE without changing anything. The only real conversion that needs to be done is unpacking any BSA files.

0

u/lilfeccibrae 3h ago

the problem is that 90 percent of mods on any Bethesda made game require script extender

-10

u/LifeIsBetterDrunk 11h ago

Bethesda is incredibly incompetent.

12

u/Tuskin38 11h ago

It's a creation kit update, not a game update.

People's mods are fine.

5

u/Krait43 10h ago

To be fair people also seem incompetent at reading. This isn't F4 update, just CK. Nothing is broken.

0

u/peppersteakpie 10h ago

Why do people be modding their games and not turning off updates? You would think the first time it happens you would learn. You go through the effort to learn to mod your game but then you don't bother to turn updates off? It's not even hard to do.

2

u/Comander_Praise 9h ago

I think it's more that each time it happens less and less get updated. Have to pick between old mods or new ones

1

u/peppersteakpie 9h ago

Older mods tend to be better so why not just stay on the older version then if there's a mod that you really like?

1

u/Civil_Salad_9725 8h ago

because sometimes you want to use both new and old mods together

1

u/Pertu500 2h ago

Because most of the times new and better (and sometimes very unique) mods appear that don't work in previous versions

1

u/TheSodomizer00 8h ago

Most mods have or eventually get OG compatibility anyway.

1

u/SomeOnionHater 9h ago

Steam updates the game when you want to launch it anyway.

1

u/peppersteakpie 4h ago

You can stop it from doing that

1

u/SomeOnionHater 4h ago

If you say so.

-1

u/EngagedInConvexation 7h ago

It's the CK, not the game, getting the update.

Besides, folks that play modded have their game set up where steam doesn't touch it.

Gamers really are the worst.

0

u/Complex_Direction488 10h ago

tbh i'd just Give up and quit playing the game because the fun it provides can't be worth all the time and effort it takes to test which mods are broken and which are not while waiting for updates on them from their makers and then having to manually fix each and every one of these mod one at a time after they're updated. God. its so bad.

0
