SteamOS screensavers with animated artwork from your Steam library

Steam’s recent update added custom screensavers to Gaming Mode. That gave me the idea of using animated SteamGridDB artwork from my library while the system is idle.

That’s the idea behind Steam Animated Screensaver. You pick some games, choose their animations and install everything into Steam. You can prepare several games at once, swap artwork, add a cover next to the title and keep the original framing or crop to 16:9 or 16:10.

It uses Steam’s built-in screensaver support. Steam handles the idle timer and playback, so you can close the app once everything is installed. No Decky needed, and playback works offline. You’ll need your own free SteamGridDB API key to download artworks.

Setup happens in Desktop Mode. Once the app has installed the screensaver, switch back to Gaming Mode and select it under Settings → Customization → Screensavers.

I’ve mostly tested it on my Steam Machine and MacBook Air. I’d like to hear how it works on Steam Deck and other SteamOS devices.

Contributors are welcome too. Animation smoothness could use more work. Some SteamGridDB animations are already choppy, and it becomes pretty noticeable on a big screen.

Looking for a SteamOS 2.4G controller fully functional

I've been spending hours lately, looking at reviews and searching for a controller ...

I'm currently using a 8bitdo Ultimate 2C with the 2.4G dongle, but the extra buttons are not recognized.

I'm looking for a controller that works on 2.4G, with rumble and gyro, additional buttons that can be mapped in steamOS - and that is not the Steam controller, as I can't get my hands on it before 2027 ...

Anyone found the holy grail of controllers ? Budget <$200, preferably <$120.

Thanks !

Absolutely Portable Power

What's up PC gamers, I once posted about this with ZFlow13 but I find myself loving the GPD Win 5 better. I love it small size for portability but behind its small size is a powerful Ryzen AI max+ 385 Radeon 8050s and i only play at about 40W TDP, which it's capable of way more but at 40W TDP no matter what Tripple A game title I run, it can handle it at 1080p high graphical settings, plus higher if you're willing to take it up to 50W, 60W or higher TDP. For those who want Bigger screen handhelds plus higher resolutions, this is a great working around that may cost anywhere from $200 to $500 depending on what you want. As you can see in the photo I have the GPD siting on my dashboard in my car to show how small and portable it is plus it's hooked up to a 13.3 inch FHD 60hz 1080p glossy IPS portable monitor with Ghost of Tsushima Runing. Pay attention to the Mobile controller that attached to the monitor. That is RRTRONICS modded Mobile gamesir G8+ plus controller that can fit even a 16" screen which i find to be to big to enjoy in my hands. But it give every desktop, laptop, handheld pc player a world where you can turn any of those into a handheld at any time and for actual handheld pcs, it give you a way to make a bigger handheld so you can get more visuals in depth to your games. And all of this is so very portable its crazy. But I hope this reach the right people who haven't though of this idea or had no clue such existed because me personally, I went through so many handhelds trying to get bigger and better screens, plus you need power behind it to make them shine the brightest and wasted tons of money. I dont wish the same on anyone else. I started with a Asus Rog Ally with the Z1 process, small screen plus small power. And I have managed to go through most all handheld pcs on the market until i got into the Highest class of handhelds like the GPD WiN 5. The cost is steep no doubt but at the end of the day i really enjoy these pworrful handhelds. Debloating Windows 11 and turning it into the most console like i can get it wasn't easy to learn and do but now that i have it all set up, the price seem a little bit more worth it. Stay safe and game on PC gamers.

First impressions from a Linux geek

Got my steamframe yesterday morning and did some tinkering. Overall I love this thing!

Some notes though.

It does not come with distrobox pre-installed, but you can install it manually to your home directory following the old instructions for the Steamdeck. The commands need to be adjusted a bit further frame, for example the user is steamos not deck, and you'll need to download the arm64 version of podman launcher instead of the x64 version, but otherwise all the instructions still work.

With distrobox you'll be limited to Linux distros that have an arm build like Debian and fedora.

You can launch app windows without entering the full desktop window, gui apps work great, but if you launch a terminal it behaves strangely, the end variables seem to not setup correctly including path variable so commands don't really work right, in the full desktop window it works great.

I have installed vesktop and am able to use that without the full desktop window, and can dock it to a controller which is pretty sick.

I'm excited to dig in more and see what else we can do here on the compute side.

I will question. Slash a p c building question

I know p c building is expensive right now for the video card and Ram

But why does no one ever think of

Using

Ryzen 5 8600G

16 gigs of Ram.

And just 1 TB, of memory

It might not have the best graphics, but it's a good entry point with steam o s and this will be also good home feeder PC.

help wanted SteamOS installation compatibility help

Recently got a MSI Cyborg 15 A13VE for relatively cheap; the machine was wiped with a fresh Win11 install by the previous owner and I want to upgrade to a usable OS, with SteamOS as my preference.

I've been told that the current version of the OS is compatible with the hardware since the June update to support NVIDIA GPUs and intel CPUs, and I haven't been able to find anything otherwise online.

Intel i7 13620H 2.40 GHz

64GB DDR5 RAM

2TB Storage, NVME & SSD

NVIDIA RTX 4050

Whenever I boot from USB and start the install from the image, it will show the usual install output but will suddenly restart before hitting the welcome screen. If I have the USB set first in the boot order in the BIOS it will just loop.

Any error messages that may be showing up disappear too quickly to for me read. Is there a way to check error logs to try and troubleshoot, or did I miss some compatibility tests somewhere and just keep banging my head into a wall?

question Running SteamOS from an external SSD?

I know it might not be the recommended way of running the OS but I've been running Windows off an external SSD for quite some time now, and I'm interested in trying SteamOS in the same way. Is there an up to date method of doing so? I've already tried like 2 different tutorials out there but none have yielded good results (just stuck on boot). Thanks

solved New Steam Beta brings us to 64Bit but Breaks AppImages

I have been using the SteamRT3 beta on my laptop, but on SteamOS, I've not enabled it, as it breaks opening AppImages, with the latest beta update, it seems like RT3 is no longer optional.

The option has gone from my SteamOS machine, and my Laptop, and I can no longer open AppImages.

Anyone know if theres a way around this, or if there's a soon to come update to fix this?

FIXED: You have to go into desktop mode then change the compatibility tool to "Legacy Steam Runtime"
This cannot currently be chosen in the default console mode.

question Questions about Steam on desktop

question OBS on steamOS doesnt save past screens and window captures

Post image
1 Upvotes

when i select and set up my screen/window captures in OBS it works perfectly and really well but when I am finished using OBS and close it, OBS forgets and unpears all previous selected windows and loads multiple screen capture windows to repeat setting it up and do it all over again. Does anyone have a fix?

It appears that someone has been able to get Intel's XMX Hardware Extensions working in Linux, which should drastically improve performance of XESS. This is particularly exciting if you, like me, have a handheld running an Intel Arc G3 Extreme chip.

I take no credit for this, for the record. I just found it and thought it seemed like great work from the community on making SteamOS even better for different hardware.

help wanted Change windows sizes in SteamOS?

Not sure the best way to ask this, but with new launchers for Recomps, and Stores like Epic games and soon GOG Galaxy, I've noticed that some launchers don't realize that they're full screened, and SteamOS seems to zoom in automatically.

I've had something similar with Discord or Vesktop, when added to gamescope, seeming way to big, but then pressing F11 seemed to fix that.

Is there a gamescope command to tell the window that you're opening, that it's expected to take up the entire screen, or whatever ideal you'd need, given if you're a bit far back from the screen you might benefit from the blown up UI.

question USB dongle recs for Bluetooth?

Hi all, I have a custom built SFF with SteamOS on it. Been struggling to find a solid USB dongle for Bluetooth - specifically for game controllers. The one I’m using now from my main tower works if I unplug it and plug it back in a few times. Once it’s working there are no issues with gamepad functionality. But I’d rather not have to keep removing and inserting - especially because I’d like to have it plugged into the I/O panel on the back.

Some initial research suggested the Edimax BT-8500, but I’ve not gotten it to work successfully at this point. Thank you in advance. I’ve searched some other threads on this sub and couldn’t quite find what I was looking for. So if someone has a link to a thread with the answer and I missed it - please send it my way.

SteamOS instead of windows?

I don't plan on switching from windows but people don't like windows because of bloatware and junk. Some people want to switch to linux, but it has other problems. I never thought of it until today, why don't people use SteamOS?? Its got everything you can ask for.

Edit:

I was wrong, I thought linux was its own thing compared to steamOS.
