SteamOS screensavers with animated artwork from your Steam library
Steam’s recent update added custom screensavers to Gaming Mode. That gave me the idea of using animated SteamGridDB artwork from my library while the system is idle.
That’s the idea behind Steam Animated Screensaver. You pick some games, choose their animations and install everything into Steam. You can prepare several games at once, swap artwork, add a cover next to the title and keep the original framing or crop to 16:9 or 16:10.
It uses Steam’s built-in screensaver support. Steam handles the idle timer and playback, so you can close the app once everything is installed. No Decky needed, and playback works offline. You’ll need your own free SteamGridDB API key to download artworks.
Setup happens in Desktop Mode. Once the app has installed the screensaver, switch back to Gaming Mode and select it under Settings → Customization → Screensavers.
I’ve mostly tested it on my Steam Machine and MacBook Air. I’d like to hear how it works on Steam Deck and other SteamOS devices.
Contributors are welcome too. Animation smoothness could use more work. Some SteamGridDB animations are already choppy, and it becomes pretty noticeable on a big screen.
