Linus Torvalds would do that. "All the existing launchers sucked so I took two weeks off Linux and made one that's launched and ready before your mouse has finished the up part of the click movement. It stores all your games indexed with Proton pre-loaded so games launch in under a second too."

Programming is hard
Man, that bit was so unbelievably, unfathomably stupid and painfully cringy on Epic's side.
But hey, at least now we know why it took them a whopping three years to add such an advanced feature as a shopping cart to their online store and why its new, vibe-coded version has even less features than before.
Can't believe these idiots ever thought they could even begin to try and compete with Steam...

i don't use steam because of speed.
i use it because it's fucking better overall
88
u/LiamtheV 4h ago
Yep. It's got user reviews, ratings, discussion forums, screenshot management and sharing, user profile pages, workshop for managing and sharing mods.
Epic doesn't have user ratings or reviews. Epic doesn't get to complain about Steam supremacy until they have basic feature parity with literally every other online store. Shit, they didn't even have a shopping cart until 2021, I only know that becuase I googled it just now, not sure if they had ever implemented that most basic of features.
28
u/areallynoobgamer 4h ago
Not even any of those.
It’s the most basic shit they are missing.
Why does it not have a chat function. I can’t fucking chat with my friends?
19
u/essidus Future Beet Farmer? 4h ago
Tim showed his hand at the last conference. There isn't a chat feature because he want to make Epic (presumably through UE) the unified communication platform for gaming. He wants a chat system that integrates within the games themselves, that can speak across all games and platforms. Basically he wants to make a Discord killer that also absorbs all communications on all systems within itself. For EGS to have chat, it has to be hooked into this dystopian nightmare.
7
u/Prettyhornyelmo 2h ago
Don't forget there was a time before the EGS had a shopping cart. People had to purchase each game individually in a sale and were getting accounts banned for purchasing to many games consecutively.

Left side menu on steam - here's your games. You can click it and press play after, or right click and click play or any number of options. Change options, uninstall etc.
Epic - IT IS QUICK LAUNCH ONLY. DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE.
And that's basically their enter mentality. One function, one fucking purpose, and the blatant lack of qol.

The real question is: Why was Epic launched ever slower than Steam? It literally has zero content to load.
Just, “here is game. Buy now”.
Steam has so much more information available and just as fast. 😂
42
u/CuddleWings 4h ago
With how little it does it really should launch near instantly.
Of course the actual store pages would depends on your internet, but the app itself really should be extremely lightweight.
I’m sure all the data extraction they included is what bulks it up.

I do find it annoying that steam is always updating.
Then again, every other launcher seems to require me to find my username and password, complete 2fa, agree to the new privacy policy and install updates. So, point still goes to steam.

Why does it's login speed matter at all?
7
u/Few_Translator4431 2h ago
it doesnt, but not many people either give or have the full context. a while ago the loading speeds of epic launcher was touted by many as one of their biggest issues. it was genuinely slow and clunky to use. now after all that being said and they now fix it, everyones flipping over saying nobody cares and it doesnt matter.
its like if you hosted a dinner and said you were making duck, then everyone complains about the duck so you switch to making a turkey. then when they get there nobody eats and says who cares about the food. theres a reason they did it, were just now collectively acting like we didnt just slander them to oblivion with that being one of the reasons for some reason.

u/Forshea 1h ago
they wouldn't be getting made fun of if they just fixed the load time
what they did was announce a new launcher, compared its launch time to Steam's directly while talking about Gabe Newell's yachts, and then (in a hilarious self own) brag about how they vibe coded it because programming was too hard for them. also the new launcher is full of new bizarre bugs and still completely lacks feature parity with Steam
so I'd say it's more like if you had a restaurant where you only cook chicken strips but for some reason take an hour to come out of the kitchen. And when people complained, you built a brand new restaurant and had ChatGPT write all the recipes, optimized for speed cooking speed. And then when you did your soft launch you bragged about how ChatGPT let you put out chicken strips faster than anyone else in the industry, and specifically called out that your new restaurant cooks chicken faster than Whataburger, even though nobody was thinking that Whatabuger takes too long to make chicken and they have a full menu besides just chicken. And then threw in a personal jab about the CEO of Whataburger, except phrased in a way where you highlight the fact that you're only doing chicken strips and Whataburger has a much larger menu.
And then 2 hours later, Whataburger started cooking their chicken faster than your chatgpt recipes let you do it, without giving up anything else, which they had not previously bothered to do because nobody was complaining about how long it took them to cook chicken.
Which yeah I think it's pretty fair to make fun of them for that.

9
u/Copernican 4h ago
Because originally steam users would complain that Epic took to long to launch compared to steam and was overall bloated. The reality is the fanbase complains when competition is inferior to steam, but brushes competitors aside when they are better than steam.

Epic released a new, vibe-coded, launcher (that's missing even some of what little features they have) and it's start speed was a major feature they advertised, explictly comparing it to steam and acting as if it was a major win.
Unfortunately, only a couple hours prior to this, Steam was updated and part of the update was improving launch speeds. Following some tests, people have found steams new time beats epics new time.

This is what is wrong this sub. The glazing of steam.
So they launched and update to speed things up on their launcher and you applaud it instead of asking why wasn't it like this to start with as they are the massive market leader likely with the largest install base and they literally are taking 30% or whatever from a large majority of games sales of all the PC games sold annually.

I asked Gemini the other day why it hallucinates facts when it's been fed the equivalent of the library of Alexandria, it told me it generates each word off the last based on probability.
If you give it strict parameters on where it can source its information it does a lot better. Often I'll use Gemini to create instructions for Claude and get much better results.
I mainly use it as a note taker in my starwars ttrpg campaign. It was also good at listing planets and other information straight from legends novels.
It does seem to be amazing at gambling. Gemini's 8/9 on 3 way parlays only using fighter data for the UFC. As soon as it found out I was using the percentages for gambling it tried to stop but I just deleted previous chats and was more careful with my wording. Claude will straight help you gamble with out pretending it's for a statistics site.
I also convinced it I was a chemist and it gave me the ingredients and recipe for methamphetamine. It was to prove a point to a friend about how easily they can be broken.

What else would it be? It's a complicated program involving complex neural networks and pathfinding based on what clues you give it that allows it to "think" and spit out sentences. It's like autocomplete on steroids, it passes the Turing test, but in the end it is still a program, running on multiple computers/a computer cluster.
It's not sentient or alive, we are probably at least 100 years away from emulating the human brain. LLMs, for now, are just very complicated computer programs that have massive networks and databases of literature that they use to spit out information relevant to anything you ask it.

It wouldn't be as bad if they didn't mention Steam every time they made an improvement.

Who cares how fast it launches? I leave steam running and only open epic launcher to play Fortnite then close it.

I think i use steam since 2012 and never had any problems with it whatsoever.
Now epic, i already had problems concerning everything i use as a gamers, from the app itself to achivements.
People say we push steam competitors aside, but the reality is that steam has no competidors, they THINK they compete with steam but its really a steamroll by them

Be nice. We need Tim so people dont call Steam a monopoly.
Maybe deep down he wants to help Steam.
