I'm 29, lost a 7-year relationship to meth addiction, and I don't know how to rebuild my life.
I really am trying. Every day, every week, every month. I had been clean for a month and a half before my latest relapse.
A year ago, I lost the longest and most meaningful relationship of my life. We were together for seven years, lived together, worked at the same place, and grew up together in many ways. She was the most incredible person I've ever met. She was goth, covered in tattoos, incredibly smart, artistic, well-read, and someone I genuinely wanted to spend the rest of my life with.
But we had a terrible problem: we were both addicted to crystal meth.
We used it constantly, at home, at work, at parties, everywhere. We even romanticized our addiction because we always did it together. Eventually, the drugs changed us. I became paranoid and convinced myself she was cheating on me, even though I had no real evidence. I planned to cheat on her, and when she found out, I hurt her deeply.
She eventually quit using, but I couldn't. Our lives became incompatible, and our relationship slowly fell apart. She got tired of the addiction, my insecurities, and the person I had become.
We tried couples therapy, but she eventually ended things.
We continued working together for a while, so we still saw each other every day. Then I found out she was dating someone else. I lost control, yelled at her, broke things, and quit my job. I haven't seen her since.
That was a year ago.
Since then, I've struggled to keep a job. I'm an accountant, but I haven't managed to stay at my recent jobs for more than a month. I've tried therapy, going to the gym, and playing music with my old band, but nothing seems to make me feel better.
I've managed to stop using meth daily, but I still relapse every month or two. Every relapse leaves me feeling terrible.
Sometimes I check her social media and see that she seems happy and is doing well. I can't help thinking that my absence has been good for her, while I'm still struggling to put my life back together.
I'm 29, broke, unemployed, and I feel like I've lost my motivation for everything. I don't feel excited about work, relationships, music, or even the things I used to enjoy.
I've been having suicidal thoughts because I don't know how to move forward. I'm scared of getting another job and failing again. I'm scared of dating someone and hurting them or ruining another relationship. I'm even scared of being happy again because I don't know how to deal with losing everything once more.
I know I can't go back to the life I had, and I don't want to romanticize what happened. Our relationship had real problems, and our addiction hurt both of us.
But I miss the person I was before everything fell apart. I miss having someone to share my life with. And I don't know how to build a life that feels meaningful without her.
For those who have struggled with addiction, lost a long-term relationship, or had to rebuild their lives in their late twenties: how did you start over when you felt like you'd already missed your chance?
