Hello Reddit, it's been a while! I'm here ask-me-anything-ing because I’ve written a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND, which I think you'll love. I’m happy to talk about that, or How I Met Your Mother, or anything else. Maybe the Loch Ness Monster? I was just in Scotland with my son and we have opinions. Have at it!
UPDATE: Wow, its been much fun talking to you all, and I see that I've only scratched the surface here and there's many more questions to get to, but if I don't get my son some dinner soon he might tie me up with a phone charger. I will try to come back to this over the next few days in order to get to as many of these as I can, but in the meantime, thank you all so much for being here. Your love for HIMYM is really touching and I'm so grateful for all of it.
And please if you get the chance check out my novel THE MUTUAL FRIEND -- I'm dreadfully proud of it. (Can you tell I've been in the UK for a week? I'm like Lily before the intervention at this point.) Anyway, cheerio!

What’s your most hated inside joke or catchphrase the writers put in the show, I hated “how dare you, and what is that” or lilys “yousonofa beeeech” both pretty annoying to me. I loved “come again for big fudge”

Someone please tell me this is a new costume, pretty gross if it’s not, after what Barney said he did in it the helmet after the phantom menace, Robin wore it, then he threw up in the helmet after finding out about Robins mourning period, then Quinn wears it 🤢
Edit: the only reasonable thing to do would be burn it and buy a new helmet, nasty even after a dry clean

You have to live with one of the five HIMYM characters for a year. Who are you choosing?
I'd pick Marshall. He's kind, loyal, fun to hang out with, and probably the best roommate out of the five. He'd make home feel like home and actually be there when you need someone. The only downside? You'd have to listen to his and Lily's relationship stories, and he'd probably turn every minor disagreement into a heartfelt life lesson.
The WORST roommate? Barney. Imagine living with a guy who constantly brings random women home, has ridiculous schemes going on 24/7, and probably has zero respect for personal space. Living with him for a whole year would be absolute chaos.
No moving out, no switching roommates for a whole year. Who are you picking, and who would be the absolute WORST to live with?

I was just rewatching ‘The Chain Of Screaming’ in season 3, where Barney tells a whole story about Gary Blauman and how he quit his job at GNB then went onto lead a pretty miserable life before he concluded that Blauman died.
But Blauman appears in the show again, and there’s even a whole episode about him😭. Am I missing something or is some sort of joke going over my head? Surely it’s not a continuity error.

I know that this show has garnered a lot of criticism in recent years because of the "Ten Sessions" episode (s3,e13) due to the plot of Ted "turning a no into a yes". But I think that this episode points to an even bigger theme throughout this show: How one should not force things.
At the beginning of this episode, Ted develops a crush on his dermatologist who reveals that she can't date him since she is his doctor. Ted promises that by the end of his ten tattoo removal sessions, he would turn her no into a yes. His friends (yes, even including Barney) tell him that it cannot be done, nor should it be done (and I agree with them).
Near the end, however, Ted is willing to let it go. However, he finds out through Marshall that Stella does secretly like Ted. It was only then when Ted gives it another try after the ten sessions. Stella tells him that while she does like him, she is career-focused and has a daughter. With this knowledge, Ted tries to find a way to make it work for both of them, showing Stella that he is willing to go the extra mile for her. And he even tells her that he understands that she is busy, but that if things change that she has his number. This is the key: he leaves the ball in HER court.
If Stella clearly did not like him, Ted would have left her alone. But are you seriously going to tell me that if you find out somebody you like likes you back, but things are complicated, would you not try find a way to make it work for both of you?
I think the episode would've been better if future Ted had said something on the lines of "And that kids is how a no can become a yes on it's own", rather than "And that kids, is how you turn a no into a yes". I have definitely had experiences where I didn't like like a girl initially, but after getting to know them, I developed some level of attraction to them and I wouldn't have been dismissive towards the idea of a potential romantic relationship with them.
My point is, Ted only went on the two minute date because Stella admitted to him that she did like him, so he tried to find a way to make it work for her. And he told her that if she was still interested, to give him a call, and if not, to not worry about it. He would've been willing to let it go had she said no. But he didn't force her to do anything. So, I don't actually think the two-minute date was that bad.
I'm already prepared for the downvotes.

I see a lot of posts about people asking how accurate Marshall's Minnesota Nice is, let me give you an example. I'm rewatching and in the scene where Marshall's gives Daphne the car to go get a car seat, and trusts that she'll come back, that's exactly what it's like.
I'm from Minnesota, but live in Los Angeles. I work in a restaurant as a bartender, and someone had to step away to a store before it closed. Usually we take collateral of some sort (drivers license, phone, keys) if they leave the restaurant without paying, but i figured she's just going to her car for a sec and will be right back. She made friends with a gentleman at the bar and trusted him enough to watch her drink and hold her seat.
She was gone for 30minutes, the other bartender asked me why I didn't take anything as collateral, my manager was ready to write me up. I told them both, 'She's coming back, have a little trust'. They said 'We had someone walk out the other night'.
10 minutes later, she came back and sat down at the bar. I smiled, and the other bartender asked what I was so happy about. I said, 'I told you she'd be back'.

I’ve rewatched HIMYM countless times and I still die laughing when in The Rehearsal Dinner, Ted reveals that he’s been secretly taking “FIGURE SKATING LESSOOOOONNNNS!”, and then almost immediately face-plants.

But instead of telling the story from Ted’s perspective aka the unreliable narrator, it was told from an unbiased, 3rd person point of view? I think it would be interesting to see how the characters and events actually played out from a different perspective. Would this be something you would want to watch, as a fan of the show?

WHO THE HELL thought that finale was even REMOTELY a good idea? They spent 8 years building up ‘The Mother’ just for her to be DEAD by the end? I know the finale has been talked about to death, but how did the scriptwriters write that finale and think “yeah, everyone will fine with that ending”? I know most people’s response to this sentiment is that the show is just called How I MET Your Mother, but just have the moment they meet be the end of it. We know they got married and had kids, but why did they have to kill her off at the end and have him go crawling back to Robin, who had seemingly FINALLY gotten Barney to settle down, only for them to divorce after only 3 years of marriage, then have Barney largely revert back to what he was like throughout the series up to that point? All these years later, and I still hate this ending honestly 🙄

Just wondering if there's a joke or line you use in your day to day life that no one gets. Or maybe they do.
Ill go first of course.
When ever someone says they are engaged or getting married. I always say "I call Ring Bear"
And 85% of the time they look confused and say "don't you mean ring bearer"
Sadly it redirected to a gambling site. It's been 20 years but a shame it became a lost piece of media.
