Monthly Megathread Were they on a break?!!

It has been a question that has been asked so many times before. Because of the high demand - but similar posts that has been generated. We're opening the floor (this mega thread) for the debate!

The case for Ross: Rachel said, "Maybe we should just take a break," and then told Monica the next morning that they "broke up."

The case for Rachel: A "break" isn't a "breakup," and Mark showing up at the apartment didn't give Ross a "get out of jail free" card two hours later.

What are your thoughts on these cases?

---
All funsies aside, We do ask everyone to stay civil and kind to one another, everyone is allowed to have opinions and express those, but treat others like how you want to be treated as well. This thread will re-occur ever 14 days to keep the time line clean from any 'On a Break, break-up?' posts! (if you spot any feel free to report it to us by pressing the report button!)

Discussion PLOT HOLE: Judy says this line to Monica in season four. However …

We actually SEE Ross and Monica’s grandmother die in season one, in the hospital. There’s a whole plot written about it, actually — Nana dying “twice.” So their grandmother was never actually “found” dead, as Judy says here. She passed away (somewhat) peacefully at the hospital.

“Well, what about their other grandma?”

We know for a fact that their other grandmother is alive. During season 7, when Monica is walking down the aisle at her wedding, this exchange occurs:

Judy: "I wish your grandmother had lived to see this."

Monica: "She's right there." (pointing to her paternal grandmother, who is sitting in the audience)

Judy: "Not that old crow. My mother."

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Disclaimer: I am well aware this is a sitcom and, especially back in the day, writers were far less concerned with continuity as opposed to landing a good joke. I am not criticizing the show whatsoever by pointing this out, it’s simply something I noticed. So please don’t flood the comments trying to somehow “justify” this quote or attempting to make it make sense. It’s a tiny continuity error. There’s no need to bend over backwards making it fit.

Edit: Annnnnnnd people are doing exactly that ^ anyway. Can’t stop themselves, can they? The human brain just NEEDS it to make sense. It’s fascinating, honestly.

Jon Lovitz, I think is the best person in the entire world. What would we do without him, I have no idea, I would be lost. That’s for sure. Tartlets. Tartlets. Tartlets

Discussion I never knew Friends was filmed for 8 months straight (every year)

This seems like such a start contrast to the state of modern television, where series that are only eight episodes are in production for two years, they’re all released in a two month span, and then you wait another three years for the next season

Chandler made an out but still got 1st base, which is a very Chandler-esque way to get on base. Joey got his team out of a jam with a strikeout after Chandler's at bat.

I saw this word out in the wild and immediately thought of Russ and Ross. And then as I read it out loud, "dysprosium!?" my wife looked up "are you watching Friends on your phone?"

Question I've never seen anyone point out this detail before

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

When Ross and Rachel were initially beginning to have problems (around the three episodes before the eventual breakup), the color schemes in their clothes started matching up- they wore a lot of brown, black, and military green. During their breakup, they were wearing the exact same outfit (military green coats with black/deep blue clothes underneath). I've never seen this be discussed, so I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but it seems like a pretty big coincidence. Does anyone know the true meaning behind it?

Clips The episode with least amount of footage, which the cast earned the most from.

I've never been able to stand clipshows and I'm always fast-forwarding through them, but I was curious, so I edited out the flashbacks from each one and I found that "The One With The Vows" only includes roughly 6 minutes and 44 seconds of original footage, out of the entire episode.

The cast weren't at a million an episode in season 7, but it was still a cushy ride for that one.

Discussion The character development that is totally different at the end from beginning

Chandler: always cherry picking everyone he meet, always afraid of long term relationship and dying alone but desperate for love(unfortunately true for Matthew). One time they even joked about Chandler will get married later than Ben. But he's the first two to have a stable relationship of the six. And turned out to be a very good husband.

Joey: first appeared as a playboy, but he was totally into Rachel for the last 3 seasons. I think he didn't date someone else other than Charlie since he fell in love with Rachel.

Ross: I think he had the least development, but I think it's the writers to be blamed that he is always tied to Rachel and do a lot of stupid things. If you can think about something that Ross is totally different from the beginning, please comment.

Monica: Same as Chandler, she kept talking about she can't get married or have kids. And she was downgraded by her mother. But she had a wonderful family in the end.

Rachel: she was spoiled and sometimes annoying at first. And she couldn't even do well at Central Perk. And it turns out, she could live happily with everyone, even with Joey. And in the end, she has a successful career and she is a responsible mother.

Phoebe: she was kind of a female version of Joey at first, and didn't have family. At the end, she had a loving husband and she had a family.

Question Does anyone else feel like the others except Chandler took advantage of Monica

Post image
504 Upvotes

I always felt bad for Monica in the episodes where the others took advantage of her. In the first thanksgiving episode everyone made her feel bad and asked for different kind of potatoes. So Monica, being the kind-hearted person she is, made all of their potatoes. She also gathered money for Rachel to go to Vail. But then as soon as they get locked out Rachel blames Monica and starts arguing with her, not even thinking about the fact that if it wasnt even for Monica, she wouldnt even have the tickets to go to Vail. Also nobody thanked her and everybody was thinking about themselves and how they wanted thanksgiving to go. In the last thanksgiving, Phoebe fooled Monica into making everyone thanksgiving dinner for everyone, using her quirks against her. And then all of them had the audacity to be late for thanksgiving for absolutely not satisfactory reasons. In any of the thanksgiving episodes they never thanked Monica for making them dinner. Also Rachel never did any housework/chores, such as dishes, sweeping etc.. She took advantage of Monica's kindness to let her live in her apartment, and literally did nothing inside the house. Does anyone else feel that the others took advantage of Monica?

Finished Friends for the first time, and Chandler Bing is easily my favorite character. The sarcasm, the awkward defense mechanisms, and the iconic delivery hit every single time.
What’s your absolute favorite Chandler line?

What was the most embarrassing moment a character had? When Monica accidentally changed Richard’s outgoing message was horrifying! Also Rachel walking down the aisle with her dress bunched up was so embarrassing.

On my friends rewatch I noticed a lot of crossover with family members . So there’s chandler kissing joeys sister , Ross kissing chandlers mom & he dated Rachel’s sister at one point, and Joey dated Ursula (phoebe’s sister ) , I can’t imagine being in any situation and being okay with my friends dating or kissing a member lol what do you guys think ?
