Monthly Megathread Were they on a break?!!

It has been a question that has been asked so many times before. Because of the high demand - but similar posts that has been generated. We're opening the floor (this mega thread) for the debate!

The case for Ross: Rachel said, "Maybe we should just take a break," and then told Monica the next morning that they "broke up."

The case for Rachel: A "break" isn't a "breakup," and Mark showing up at the apartment didn't give Ross a "get out of jail free" card two hours later.

What are your thoughts on these cases?

---
All funsies aside, We do ask everyone to stay civil and kind to one another, everyone is allowed to have opinions and express those, but treat others like how you want to be treated as well. This thread will re-occur ever 14 days to keep the time line clean from any 'On a Break, break-up?' posts! (if you spot any feel free to report it to us by pressing the report button!)

Discussion This is still one of the best Monica moments in the whole show and her roast of everyone else is one of the reasons why so many people continue to love and cherish the series. The fact that she said all of this in a single breath is real proof of Courtney Cox's acting talent, in my opinion.

The reaction that everyone gives, except Chandler (cause, he's, you know, inside a box!), especially with both Rachel and Joey giving both expressions of astonishment and taken aback with Monica's "guns blazing" approach is like the cherry on top, in my opinion. It's also one of the moments where we see the past history of all of them narrated to us, which is really cool when you think about it.

It's so unique that a characters divorces become a running joke. Have the writers ever said why they did this, was it planned?

Should Ross have gotten more divorces since he was the divorce force? He didn't have any after season 6. Mona could have been one.

Discussion Who from the supporting cast and guest stars left a lasting impression?

Of course for me it was Rena Sofer (as Katie) purely for her vibe and unbeliveable looks. Also Brooke Shields as Joey’s date (or should i say Drake Ramoray’s…?) and Bruce Willis’s play at Rachel’s boyfriend. So funny!

Discussion One of the most unique closing scenes in Friends

I’m currently rewatching the series and noticed this unique ending in s2ep4. The music, Ross dancing, this angle outside of the coffee shop.

Are there any other unique scenes like this?

the cast were all smokers except for David Schwimmer. I couldn’t get a picture of Lisa with a cigarette, so I just used the picture from the show like schwimmer. Either way, 90s was a different time.

Discussion Who from the cast do you personally think about the most?

Post image

Either as the character or as the actor - who stays in your head rent free? Who do you analyse the most? Can be also somebody not from the main six, like i for example think about Chandler and Joey the most when it comes to analysis, but i also often think of Rachel’s sisters. Would they be able to turn out the way Rache did, given the same set of circumstances?

Discussion Weird that Rachel couldn’t just go to the club after the Opera

Post image
50 Upvotes

Granted I’ve only been to 1 opera in my entire life but it started at like 7pm and we were out of there by 9:30pm. Clubs in New York are usually only ramping up by around 10pm and they go until 4am. Rewatching the show now and I came to this episode and this immediately struck me as weird. Just go to both?!

Question Why was Phoebe homeless?

I know that the show said her stepdad went in jail and her mother killed herself so she got homeless.

But it feels kinda weird to me that she first lived with her grandma, and it doesn't seem like her grandma lost touch with her for several years or something. Her grandma even knew where her father lived, and the episode she knew that, her grandma said it was her mother's idea not to let her know who is her father.

So if her grandma knew where she was, how could she become homeless? I know her grandma isn't super rich or something, but she had a house at least.

Is it just a continuity problem or is there some kind of logical explanation?

Throwback Courteney Cox - 5 years before Friends first aired

• Upvotes

Letterman has always been a bit of a whacko so I don’t really like this interview, but it feels very cool to see someone half a decade before their life irreversibly changes forever

Discussion Eariler today, I watched "The One With The Cat" for the first time as it's currently my first watch-through of the series.. and as a Scream fan, Monica's haircut was something I kept focusing on.

I would assume Courtney was filming Scream 2 at the time. You can even faintly see the red dye in her hair in the Friends episode. Though, the dye is gone by the next episode, The One With The Cuffs.

Throwback The One Where they’re all on SNL

Is actually so great, 90s SNL was one of the best things I’ve ever seen, and it may just be nostalgia. It’s blinding me here, but it’s just so great to watch. I’ll probably biased, but I still love it.

Question What Demi Moore hairstyle did Monica want?

• Upvotes

I only know of 2 hairstyles Demi is known for: long and straight or the really short 'do she had in Ghost. Which one did Monica actually want? If it's the first, then she shouldn't have been getting a cut; she needed to grow her hair out. If it's the latter, then it wasn't too late to rectify what Phoebe had started. Is there a different Demi hair she's referring to?

Discussion PLOT HOLE: Judy says this line to Monica in season four. However …

We actually SEE Ross and Monica’s grandmother die in season one, in the hospital. There’s a whole plot written about it, actually — Nana dying “twice.” So their grandmother was never actually “found” dead, as Judy says here. She passed away (somewhat) peacefully at the hospital.

“Well, what about their other grandma?”

We know for a fact that their other grandmother is alive. During season 7, when Monica is walking down the aisle at her wedding, this exchange occurs:

Judy: "I wish your grandmother had lived to see this."

Monica: "She's right there." (pointing to her paternal grandmother, who is sitting in the audience)

Judy: "Not that old crow. My mother."

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Disclaimer: I am well aware this is a sitcom and, especially back in the day, writers were far less concerned with continuity as opposed to landing a good joke. I am not criticizing the show whatsoever by pointing this out, it’s simply something I noticed. So please don’t flood the comments trying to somehow “justify” this quote or attempting to make it make sense. It’s a tiny continuity error. There’s no need to bend over backwards making it fit.

Edit: Annnnnnnd people are doing exactly that ^ anyway. Can’t stop themselves, can they? The human brain just NEEDS it to make sense. It’s fascinating, honestly.

Chandler made an out but still got 1st base, which is a very Chandler-esque way to get on base. Joey got his team out of a jam with a strikeout after Chandler's at bat.

Chandler: What do you know? You're a door. You just like "knock-knock" jokes.
