READ THIS BEFORE POSTING. Yes, this means you. READ THIS FIRST, V6 - How to avoid the Flair of Shame and eternal ridicule

So, you need help with long range shooting? Welcome to r/longrange! We've got a core group of dedicated members (and a few goofballs) that are happy to help you out with your questions on equipment, technique, troubleshooting, where to find training or matches, etc.

If you're looking to ask for advice, we ask that you review the following 10 core guides, as they cover the overwhelming majority of newcomer questions. If your question is not answered in these 10 guides, please see below for the 4 basic questions your post should answer when asking for suggestions or advice, especially when it comes to things to buy.

If you make a post that asks for information covered in the 10 core guides, or your post doesn't cover the 4 key questions below, your post may be deleted, or it may be given the Flair of Shame TM until you correct your post.

What's the Flair of ShameTM, you ask? You'll know it when you see it.

If at any time you have questions on the rules of the sub, this pinned post, the general FAQ, why you got the Flair of ShameTM or anything similar, please use the modmail function.

CORE GUIDES:

  1. The sub's official FAQ/WIKI, as curated by the community as a whole.
  2. Need help picking scope rings? The official Longrange guide to scope ring height (ring)
  3. Looking at buying a magnum (300WM or PRC, 6.5PRC, 7mm PRC, 338 Lapua, etc) as your first LR rifle? Hollywood's recoil primer - why magnums suck for starting in long range, recoil matters, and it's not about your shoulder (magnum or recoil)
  4. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
  5. The official r/Longrange glossary - because words mean things (glossary)
  6. LockyBalboaPrime's First Time buyer's guide for rifles V2 (starter)
  7. JMhawaii's long range starter guide (Link to Google Sheets) (starter)
  8. Trollygag's 1k yard starter guide (starter)
  9. Where are ranges or long ranges near me? - Wheretoshoot.org and over600.com (ranges)
  10. The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please review before asking hunting-related questions, as hunting is not the core purpose of this sub. (hunting)

The 4 key questions:

  1. What do you want to do/buy, and WHY? - Do you want to buy a rifle for PRS competition? Picking a laser rangefinder for NRL Hunter matches? Looking at scopes for F-Class competition? A tripod because you think they're cool and want to have one when banging steel with friends? What you're planning to do has a lot of influence on what works well, what works poorly, and what is an utter waste of time, so the more detail you can provide the better.
  2. How far away do you want to do it/what do you want to use it for? - 300 yards? 1,000? 2,000? Distance matters, 'nuff said.
  3. How much are you willing to spend to do it? What's your budget in currency? Your idea of "on a budget" isn't going to be the same as everyone else's. Saying your budget is unlimited for a laser rangefinder may change when someone suggests one that costs over $10,000. We need to know how much you're willing to spend. It can be a hard limit, a range, or even an approximate - but you need to give a number.
  4. How much experience do you currently have with it? - Jumping straight into a 375 Cheytac rifle to shoot 2 miles isn't going to go well if you have never shot a rifle past 300. We need at least a basic idea of what your relevant skill level is in order to give advice and suggestions that go with your skill set. While including your experience with other shooting disciplines is helpful, it's not going to be as relevant as most new shooters expect. You can love shooting 10ga slugs all day long from a shotgun, but it doesn't mean starting off with a magnum is a good idea.

When answering these 4 questions in your post, give as much detail as you can. The more details you give the faster you'll get suggestions or advice and you'll get better quality too. Help us to help you. Please don't treat the sub like your own personal crowd sourced search engine.

More guides:

If your question is answered in these, you will probably get called out by the members of the sub for not reading them, but it's not automatic grounds for the Flair of Shame.

Hunting-specific:

  2. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
  3. Want to hunt game at 400+ yards? The long range hunting primer - shots on game at 400+ yards aren't trivial, and a magnum cartridge isn't a cheat code. NOTE: Questions/discussion around shots on game past 300 yards will be removed from the sub. See the expanded policy link above. (hunting)
  4. Hollywood's guide to field testing your skills and gear (especially for long range hunting, but also pertains to NRL Hunter matches) - How to know the distances you and your gear are capable of making shots at (hunting)

MISC NOTES:

Quite a few guides/links feature a single word in parentheses and italics listed after them. If you use the phrase cheetofingers (all one word, no italics needed) followed by the word listed after a guide, you will summon the AutoModerator to reply to you with a link to that guide or guides. If the guide had (pews) after it, you could say cheetofingers pews in a post or comment in this sub to summon AutoMod with a link to that guide.

We've implemented the Flair of Shame as an official policy here instead of deleting posts that violated Rule #1 and the info in this pinned post. We felt that the flair was better than outright deleting posts while also helping long-standing members decide how much they want to participate in posts that have likely been covered time and time again. We're trying to strike a balance between encouraging members to read the info that the sub has cataloged, not wasting the time of established members that may be frustrated with revisiting the same topics repeatedly, and also not banishing new shooters that missed the pinned post to the freezer to never get help. Balancing those three things is a constant struggle, and one we're actively trying to get better at.

I made a thing! (Home made gear/accessories) I Gave My MDT Crush It Timer a Major Upgrade

Figured I’d share a cool project I did.

I’ve always liked messing with hardware and software, and thought the MDT Crush It Timer and Send It Level were really cool form factors.

So one weekend I decided to risk bricking my timer and see if I could reverse engineer it.

Ended up turning it into a ballistic calculator while keeping the timer and stopwatch functionality.

The solver supports G1/G7, spin drift, aero jump, and environmentals. Once your rifle profile is set, you really only need to enter DA, wind, and range.

The ballistic solution works really well, but honestly my favorite part is how simple it is to use. Just a knob and a little screen.

Pretty happy with how it turned out. Curious what you guys think.

I made a thing! (Home made gear/accessories) Upgrading Ruger Americans dumb?

I see a lot of post online saying don’t put a lot of money or money at all into a ruger American, just save up and get better rifle. I was able to touch a mile with both of these with ease and couldn’t be happier! What’s your option on Ruger Americans and what has been your experience upgrading them?

  1. Ruger American Gen 1 308, Arkin 26 Bull barrel, mdt xrs chassis.
  2. Ruger American Gen 2 308

, 22in stock barrel,

  1. mdt lss gen 3 chassis

🫣I said I read the pinned posts, but I lied🫣 Help a brother out with suppressor choice 🫡

So many good options it’s overwhelming lol. Use case is for 308/300prc as a current setup on a switch barrel rifle but might in the future jump into 338 realm. Tbac is at the top of my list at the moment and specifically the Magnus s rr in 30 cal. I like the option to buy the recoil x flat cap and have a quieter more traditional suppressor or run the rr brake and cut down on that recoil a bit. However I keep second guessing myself and am debating should I get it with a 338 bore or something like the ultra for the possibility to run 338? There are also things like the griffin armament prc suppressor and others grabbing my attention. Lastly torn on mounting systems as well, the sr from Tbac speaks to me because I like over built things but maybe it’s overkill on a bolt gun? Will be used for prs type shooting ranges from 800-1200 yards, budget isn’t too much of a factor but any money saved is nice.

Title may be misleading - Politics, rumor, etc Ruger is discontinuing their Precision Rifle. When it was released, the Gen1 was a good buy for a ton of people. #RIP

Competition help needed - I read the pinned posts Team Matches

I have gotten very interested in team matches. I have a buddy who competes at Mammoth and running simulated states with him has been so much fun. I love the teamwork, communication, and find-range-engage format, but I’m not interested in doing Mammoth or any other event that requires that level of rucking in the immediate future.

What are my options for a team sniper style match with either no timed rucking or much less rucking and more generous par times than Mammoth?

Btw I did do a little research and it seems like NRL Hunter, TRT in MT, some Colman Creek events, and some events at Ben Franklin might fit the bill, but I would love to hear from folks who have shot these events.

tLDR: what team precision matches have less or no rucking?

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Magnification For Beginner Precision Class

Will be taking a beginner precision shooting course in December.

Max range is 500y and I will be running an 18" Aero Precision 308 with a SilencerCo, SAKER ASR 762 can.

I'm currently shopping for glass and I have settled on the Vortex Venom, FFP, MRAD reticle, and MRAD turrets.

My question pertains to magnification; it comes in 3-14x and 5-25x. I have read in several places that for me at my skill level (0) and class conditions that 3-14x is actually the better option and will be sufficient for me for a long time while I skill-build.

I just wanted input from you all that this is the correct approach because I'm fighting my urge to get the 5-25x (because of the cool factor, I know that's bad motivation).

Thanks !

Other help needed - I read the pinned posts Balancing Tikka T1x in XRS

Hi all. I just got an MDT XRS chassis for my Tikka T1x. I installed the action in the chassis and the balance is heavily biased towards the rear. With my bipod mounted all the way forward, the balance point is in the middle of the magwell. To get it to balance about in inch forward of the bag stop, I had to use 3lbs of weight (I used dried beans at the front of the chassis).

How am I going to get that much weight up front without spending as much as the rifle? I'm on a bit of a budget, but even if I buy the MDT internal forend weight, that only adds a pound, and not all at the very front of the chassis like the beans.

How important is having the perfect balance point (I'm new to positional shooting)? Suggestions?

Optics help needed - I read the pinned posts [Beginner resource] Livestream with Ilya Koshkin (Dark Lord of Optics) answering my precision rifle / optics questions

Thumbnail
youtube.com
5 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I’m pretty new to precision rifles (both the equipment side and the actual shooting) and I’ve been stuck in analysis paralysis more often than not (like every major part purchase). I sent a handful of questions to Ilya Koshkin on The Hide and he was kind enough to answer them on a livestream.

Most of the discussion is optics-focused; the first question is more general shooting advice. Timestamps are below if you want to jump around. Probably a couple of questions are kind of ignorant (i.e. #2) but even with a dumb question, he helped me finally find the light switch. Hope it's helpful.

Starting Out with Precision Rifle

  1. 12:04 For a new shooter, who may have limited access to a long distance range, can I find value in a 0-500 or even a 0-100 yard range? Considering I am shooing a common PRS round? i.e 6.5 Creedmoor. Or any other competition reticle.
  2. 29:01 I know this has been repeated a million times, at least, and I personally decided on mil reticles long ago - what reticle system should a new shooter use? If we are CONUS and every shooting range we shoot at has targets at 100, 200, 300, and 500 yards, does it make sense to go with a mil reticle? If yes, what about a mil or MRAD reticle makes it make the most sense?
  3. 39:55 This is the one I most want your take on. Fine line sub-tensions are clearly better for a precise aiming point, but a reticle that is too fine is harder for old eyes to pick up and too large seems to hide impact and splash, especially on dirt or in mirage. Where is the practical balance between a reticle thin enough to shoot accurately and thick enough that I can still see the hit, the miss, and the dust? Do you have a preferred line weight, center-dot size, or open-center design for that, and does illumination change the answer?
  4. 1:03:55 For people whose eyes are not what they once were. Exit pupil, eye box, and diopter range seem to matter more now than raw magnification. What should an older shooter prioritize so the scope is still usable at the powers where precision actually happens, and are there scopes that punish aging eyes more than others?
  5. 1: 17:30 If you were putting one precision scope on a new shooter’s rifle tomorrow, money being reasonable but not unlimited, what would you actually choose, and what would you tell him to ignore in the spec sheet? Budget: $1600-$2000.00

Reloading related LRHT 144s - Partial Pack?

Does anyone have a source for small packs of Berger LRHT .264 144gr's? I've been buying small packs to test ammo from SubMOAshooting, but they don't seem to have that size avilable. I've been wanting to try a small run of those guys to test on my rifle.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Read the wiki and... still looking for guidance. ARC CDG vs Zermätt something? For loooooong term.

Wife has taken my Bergara b14 in 6.5 (she does love hot cheetos). so I guess Im using this as an opportunity to go a different route than off the shelf but want to stay in the R700 realm.

I want to do a short action and a long action. Short action for 6.5 to keep for myself, and a long action for something less than 300winmag. Leaning toward 7PRC currently.

Is there a good reason to not go with Origin to save money?

For 7PRC I dont see why a medium or thick tang would be bad, nor why I wouldnt want an integrated recoil lug, thus bringing me to SR3/TL3 or CDG instead of the origin.

My biggest concern realistically is longevity of parts support. My state has already passed laws that wil make purchases in the future much more of a hassle, and so the two actions will be what I plan to be my last purchases. If SCOTUS addresses the laws they've passed then ill consider purchasing again in the future.... but that seems like a distant and nearly nonexistent hope.

And last, between the Zermatts and the CDG, which would be easiest for me to rebarrel in my garage? I want to use shouldered prefits so I dont have to deal with headspacing and barrel nuts and shit. So im just assuming the process is gonna end up being the same between the two lol.

Edit: after much hard thinking, I think i will go Zermatt after all. Since this will be the last platform and firearm purchase i make, perhaps in my life, since it doesnt look like the wife will OK us moving to a different state anytime soon or ever. The reason ill go zermatt is that rather than just getting a short and a long action, ill get a short medium and long action. All origin actions to make the finances balance out. So while I may not use the medium action much, i have it just in case the firearms space evolves. Because, again, the laws going into effect here. Im looking to have my gun purchases done forever before April 2027.

Thank you all for your help thus far! (And if my wife gets jealous, ill get her CDG. Because if you cant make a decision, getting all of them solves it all lmao)

Optics help needed - I read the pinned posts Arken LH4 4-16 question

Long story short, I was recently given an Arken LH4 4-16 MIL from a buddy who’s had it sitting for quite some time. Putting it on a 16” 6ARC.

My question, I’ve heard very mixed reviews about Arken. So wondering if I keep this optic and run with it, or do I sell it (I know they aren’t worth much) and upgrade to something a little better. Main use case is coyote hunting, anywhere from 1-300yds. I’ll occasionally shoot at the range where I have steel out to 800yds. I mainly dial my scopes vs use the holdovers, have heard mixed reviews of Arkens tracking.

So figure I’d come here and see if anyone has some reps behind it. Thanks in advance!
