What score/age/size? What's the score/age/size megathread

This is the ONLY post allowed where you can ask for an estimate on your animal's score, age, size, etc.

Keep in mind that it's practically impossible to judge many characteristics of an animal based off of pictures. For one, your cameras aren't usually the greatest (especially grainy trail cam pics), for another, it's hard to judge scale. Finally, not every animal can be aged by picture.

Rules:

  1. Top-level comments are for asking about your animal.
  2. One top-level comment per animal.
  3. Images should clearly show the animal. Albums should be linked, do not post multiple images in multiple comments.
  4. Include pertinent details: location (state, province, country), species, known reference for scale, distance from camera, etc.
  5. Be polite. Snarky comments ("not getting any younger") are subject to deletion.

Success! Second Buck Down! Beautiful 11-pt Whitetail (Dropped 10/20)

I am officially tagged out on antlered deer for the season! This is the first time I've ever tagged out on bucks before the rut, and my second overall deer with a compound bow. He's one we've watched for awhile, and I call him "Krabby" after the crab claw on his left beam. Once again, the good ol' Mathews got the job done, and I couldn't be happier with the results! This deer is also special because he'll be the first one I have mounted that I took with a bow. I'm in the process of editing the hunting video and will upload to YouTube as soon as I can. Until then, enjoy these photos and let me know what you think!

Success! Second Chance Bull

Post image
80 Upvotes

Last night I was fortunate enough to get a second chance at this beautiful free range 6x6 New Mexico Bull Elk. My first elk. I say second chance because I pulled the trigger on him two nights prior. I had a hangfire with factory ammo, the first time in my life. Delayed fire by about 2-3 heartbeats and missed him completely. Super scary. Luckily this is the first trip I’m hunting suppressed and he wasn’t really spooked. He came back to the same meadow and I had the opportunity to redeem myself. One shot double lung and heart. Took less than five steps.

The ranch is now calling that meadow the Second Chance Meadow. I wanted to share this because I was really upset that I might’ve missed my opportunity due to equipment failure. But I shook it off, got back out there, and got another shot. Sometimes as hunters things don’t go our way and it’s important to take an opportunity for a second chance.

General question/discussion Deer processing. Bone-in roast?

Is this a thing? My grandpa(dads side) was a butcher but he passed when i was 2(im 43 in a few weeks). He always had deer processed at his store so my dad didnt learn to do it until he moved from montana to Minnesota and learned from my moms dad. Moms dad had a very picky process, i got away from it as best i could but havent done much hunting in 10 years because i cant barely physically handle gutting the deer let alone all the processing myself for 10 years. Im very interested in having my local butcher/processor handle that for me so i can hunt again. I dont see why a front shoulder cant be trimmed and plopped on a smoker/grill? Or maybe a hind quarter trimmed, sawed in 1/2 or sawed into bone in steaks? Not that im against “de-boned and roasted” per their website wording. If youve done something like this i would love to hear the pros/cons! I miss having a freezer full of venison and my boss is willing to give me every possible moment off for hunting and im in a zone where “its brown its down”(subsistence hunting, IYKYK). I could consult youtube but its probably some moron that doesn’t know well done venison is a bigger crime than well done steak!

THANKS!

General question/discussion No blood trail

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Just recently I had an opportunity to land a shot with my bow at a bear. I got a full pass through and recovered my arrow to what I thought was a pretty good shot. I left it alone overnight (evening sit) to not push the bear away. Coming back this morning I find my arrow but no blood trail wondering what I should do. I’ve scouted the area and can’t seem to find any signs at all. Looking for suggestions as to what to do? There are no tracking dogs anywhere close that I can find. Talking to others it looks like it might have been a non fatal wound which means no blood but still unsure. I have attached a picture of the arrow for reference.

Feeling anxious that I might not be able to retrieve the animal / it could be suffering.

Thanks in advance

Pics & Videos (Trail, GoPro, etc.) Gone for good?

Hey everyone

Wondering in anyone has ever had a mature buck bust a camera like this and still use the area? Ive had many deer over the years stare straight at them when they're recording and not spook but Im worried this ol fella might be gone for good!

I just killed and gutted my first squirrel, does this meat look good to eat? The rest of the squirrel was scrapped because of all the bird shot bbs stuck inside. It needs rinsed off better as you can see theres grass and hair on one of the sides. But according to the internet it says to store it in the fridge, not freezer, for 3-5 days first. It is currently in the fridge.

Found a duck call lanyard tonight while hunting, I grabbed it and posted it in local Facebook groups. It has a band on it, just wondering if there would be any way too find out who reported the band.

General question/discussion Would you let hunting/fishing determine where you move to?

Post image

I did it boys! I found a wife! She likes hunting and fishing and she loves to learn more everytime we go out! And the kicker…..SHES HOT!!

Right now we live in Boston and I can get it done out here but I’m not gonna lie it doesn’t feel like hunting. I legally shot a deer a couple weeks ago near trails where people hangout and walk their dogs but I felt like I had to hide the body fast and really couldn’t celebrate it. Like I was in the mob or something lol.

We are thinking of moving to the triangle in NC, it doesn’t scream to us YOU NEED TO MOVE HERE. But we would like to progress the whole married, dog, kids style of life and given our jobs that seems like the most doable option and it’s a pretty decent place. I’m not gonna lie tho one of the reseaons I feel like we may like it is because there is more opportunities to hunt and fish.

I could see us thugging it out here in MA and being creative as to how to live here, and still do all the things we like, we are really good at that! But it is exhausting!!!

I’m sure this will be a bias sample but how much would you considered acess to hunting and fishing if you were make a move? Bonus points for anyone that knows the triangle area or even the New England/Massachusetts area and can compare it for me outdoorsman wise.

10 day hunt in BC, 300 win mag, 2 shots each all four were double lung shoulder. My bull was 100yds coming to cow calls, my Dads bull was 40yds in thick trees coming to grunts and scrapes. We got both on video which is an added bonus.

Filling the freezers and then some. Thank you BC for such an unforgettable experience! Happy hunting

Success! Best Deer of My Life on Public Land!

Post image

I saw him walk out sighted in on his shoulder, click no bang. Chambered my next round, he heard the bad round hit the forest floor, the bang! Right behind his front shoulder .My first words were “I just smoked a 4 pointer!”. Shot him just before sunset, tracked him 100 yards and had the boys come help me drag him out.To my surprise he was in fact not a four pointer but my second deer ever. 7 Point, 181 pounds!

Success! First black grouse of the season

Post image

Late start to the season as it is almost over here, temperature was -5c and I used Geco .308 9,55g/147gr fmj from about 75m away. Clean shot as it did not hit any breast meat by hitting liver, guts and stomach, fell from the tree instantly.

General question/discussion Making way through thick brush tips

Alright so after my last post asking how to get away from all the unlawful stands left up year after year, just about everyone suggested just going deeper. In northern MN, the underbrush is terribly thick on public lands. I’m curious if anyone uses a hatchet to create a path for themselves to get deeper, knowing they’ll be carrying a climber stand and gear on their back which tends to snag often in uncut poplar/buckthorn brush. If you do, what machete do you use?

I’ve hunted in Wyoming for 7 years now, lived here forever, and got some doe’s and whitetails but for the first time in a general hunt I got a beautiful public land buck just had to share for for my first buck that is not a forky. Also if any can guess the size let me know I will be sizing him soon after I get him back for a european mount.
