PELLET GUIDE

H&N

Budget option: Crosman

Tip: Different rifles prefer different pellets.

Always test several types to see which shoots best.

As many shooters say:

“The gun chooses the pellet.”

Side Notes for Beginners

BBs vs Pellets

A common point of confusion for new shooters is the difference between BBs and pellets.

BBs are small round steel balls (usually .177 / 4.5mm). They are commonly used in CO₂ pistols, replica airguns, and beginner plinking guns. Because they are spherical and often used in smoothbore barrels, they tend to be less accurate, especially at longer distances. BBs are inexpensive and great for casual backyard shooting.

Pellets are diabolo-shaped projectiles designed for rifled airgun barrels. The hollow skirt expands slightly when fired, creating a better seal with the air pressure behind it. This helps stabilize the pellet in flight and improves accuracy.

Because of their design, pellets are generally much more accurate than BBs and are the preferred choice for most airgun shooting.

Double Recoil and Optics

Many new airgun shooters don’t realize that spring-powered airguns produce something called double recoil.

Unlike firearms, which recoil once backward, many airguns recoil in two directions.

When the gun fires:

  1. The spring and piston rapidly move forward, causing the gun to jerk forward.
  2. When the piston suddenly stops at the end of the compression chamber, the gun then recoils backward.

This forward-then-back motion is known as double recoil.

Because of this, some scopes designed for firearms can fail when mounted on powerful airguns. When choosing optics for spring or gas ram airguns, it’s best to use scopes specifically labeled “airgun rated.”

Gas Ram vs Spring Piston

Most break-barrel airguns use either a spring piston or a gas ram (gas piston) powerplant.

Spring piston guns use a large coiled spring. When the gun is cocked the spring compresses, and when fired it expands quickly, pushing a piston forward and compressing air behind the pellet.

Gas ram guns replace the metal spring with a sealed gas strut. When cocked the gas inside the strut compresses, and when the trigger is pulled the gas expands to push the piston forward.

Spring Piston

• Traditional and very common design

• Usually cheaper

• Can produce more vibration and “spring twang”

Gas Ram

• Smoother firing cycle

• Less vibration and noise

• Can remain cocked longer without damaging the powerplant

• Typically a bit more expensive

Both systems are widely used and reliable, and many shooters prefer one or the other based on shooting feel and personal preference.

Advice Scope options for 100 meter precision shooting with an Altaros M24 .22

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

I would like to ask for advice since I am completly lost in the world of scopes.
Recently I bought an Altaros M24 in .22 (PCP) which I want to use for 100 meter precision shooting.
When looking on the internet I see all kind of brands for scopes.
Would you advise to buy a scope from Vector Optics, Vortex Optics or Hawke Optics?
And what type of scope would you advise?
I have read that a magnification of maximum 24 is good for shooting at 100 meters.
But what about all other factors? Thank you in advance!

NEW GUN DAY New stuff to play with

Post image
45 Upvotes

Long time lurker in this group as well as long-time airgun enthusiast, perhaps 25 plus years. What got me hooked was a crosman 177 quest which was an absolute joy to shoot and after 22 years, still works very well. Thanks to tips from folks in this group as well as a parts diagram I was able to get a replacement bolt for my Trevox. Pictured here is the Trevox, a Gamo 430 and my newest acquisition, a Gamo Swarm Whisper 10x.

Out of the box the whisper was easy to set up. It is a 1st gen however I still got it because I used some customer tip money so out of pocket to this rifle cost me less than $5! The scope that it comes with is passable, however it is a little bit of a pain to zero. First 50 shots I have already damaged my metal rotary targets with it because it hits so hard that it torques them and warps them off axis! I have a feeling this is going to be a lot of fun! Apart from a new scope, does anybody have any suggestions (bipod make/model, etc) for this rifle? Again, thanks for the tips and info previous post regarding my Trevox!

General Airgun Question New to me Airfoce Talon SS, it has a Cf tank?

Post image

I bought this Talon SS and it has a Talon Tunes Carbon fiber tank, it says 300 bar max fill on it. I had a Texan 457 Tx2 and if you filled it past 3000psi you would get valve lock. Should I just send it to 250bar and see what happens, or just fill it to 3000psi?

Competition Pistol Marksmanship + Rowing = Indoor Biathlon Event called Split Shot

Thumbnail gallery
44 Upvotes

Split Shot is a free indoor biathlon style event you can do in your basement.

Biathlon is cool, but almost nobody has access to it. 10m Olympic pistol is fantastic, but not very athletic, and not everyone has 33+ ft of basement. Rowing is the ultimate in endurance tests but pretty boring.

So I came up with Split Shot. It combines sprint and endurance rowing with one-handed marksmanship, and it’s harder than it sounds.

What you need: a rowing machine, any .177 pellet pistol (CO2, pump or PCP), a pellet trap, and about 20 ft. You shoot from 5 m (16.4 ft).

How it works: you row a leg, then shoot a stage at a 23 mm black. You do that four times. Every miss is 100 m of extra rowing before the next leg. One clock runs the whole time, and total time is the score.

Short: 4 × 750 m, 5 shots per stage

Full: 4 × 1500 m, 10 shots per stage

Long: 4 × 2500 m, 15 shots per stage

You shoot standing, one-handed, with no support and open sights only. Single-shot and magazine pistols are separate divisions, and so are Concept2 and WaterRower. The scoresheet prints on one page and has a scale check built in, so everyone shoots the same target.

My first short course: 24:22.9, 6 total misses. It was really hard!

It’s free and not a business; I just think it’s fun.

Two Page Target + Rules

One Page Target

If you try it, post your time and tag me. I would love to hear what you think

Be safe and follow all local laws!

PCP Barra 250z Barrel Tight Spot Video

This is a video to the follow up post showing the original barrel shipped with my 250z that was performing subpar. I originally thought it was due to the crown but now I believe it was probably due to a tight spot. You can see the force required to push the pellet drastically increases within the last couple inches at the end of the barrel. Going from 300grams to over 1500 grams.

PCP Barra 250z Barrel Update NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

First, a big Thank You to Geo and Crystal over at Barra. I was sent a replacement barrel after troubleshooting steps were taken. I got it installed a couple days ago and got my first 50 shots with JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy Diablo 18.13gr pellets today. This limited shooting got me to about 1/2" at 50 yards after dialing in the regulator pressure. I still have yet to test other pellets/weights/slugs but I am excited to do so.

Before they had approved and sent the replacement, I went ahead and put the original barrel on the lathe to try and re-crown it myself. While certainly not a pro job, I think it turned out okay. Unfortunately, it shot no better (and no worse) than before.

This leads me to believe that the accuracy issues I experienced may have been due to a noticeable tight spot that was about 1/2"-3/4" long, 1" from the end of the barrel. You can easily feel it when pushing a pellet through by hand. On the new barrel, the pellets pushed through smoothly from the breach to the end of the bore. I will create a separate post with a video showing the tight spot.

The crown on the original barrel looked very odd to me, but Geo explained why some may look this way and shoot to an acceptable standard:

"First, to address your question as plainly as possible, all barrels in the factory where the 250z is made are manufactured using the same process. They are then cnc machined according to the specifications outlined on a 2D drawing for the particular gun they are being made for, this includes a traditional looking crown and leade. All barrels begin life exactly the same as each other. The barrels are then tested outside of the gun at a distance of 25 meters. We are talking every single barrel they make. If a barrel fails to meet their internal accuracy standards, the crown and/or leade get hand reamed with an 11 degree piloted reamer. It then gets retested, if they pass, they get moved into production. This is why barrels will sometimes have crowns that appear to be off. Some pass without hand reaming, some require little hand reaming to pass, others require more hand reaming. This process is not unique to Barra airguns, they employ this process across all brands they manufacture barrels for. It unfortunately introduces barrels that can look worse than they actually shoot and means that any guns with a barrel manufactured by this factory are prone to having inconsistent looking crowns. I personally detest this practice, especially in PCP rifles at this price point, but they've told me the only option to completely eliminate this is to have them install barrels made elsewhere.

To my knowledge, what is unique to the Barra brand, is the fact we have complained to them so much about their barrels, they take all barrels that pass their 25m accuracy tests, laser print a serial number on them, then bore scope the barrel from leade to crown. Those files, along with their shooting tests are kept on hand for their records for future complaints. Additional shooting testing is randomly carried out when the guns are fully assembled to make sure that the assembled guns perform to specification. All testing is carried out in an automated fashion from a pneumatic vice to eliminate shooter error. Having this data on hand allows us to compare our data to see if something slipped through their extensive barrel testing and documentation procedures.

The actual incidence rate of defective barrels in the 250z in both calibers is quite low, just over 1% of all rifles. It is possible to be in that unlucky 1% and receive a defective barrel. I've gotten them in my own internal QC testing. We will make these types of situations right, by providing returns for refund or exchange, or some customers prefer to have us send them a replacement barrel. Part of this process is testing the gun with recommended ammo and velocities to confirm that the barrel is indeed defective. What we can't guarantee is that every ammunition style / type will deliver excellent results in every gun / barrel. We do sell OEM barrels for people who want to experiment as well as offer high quality Lothar Walther barrels that were manufactured completely in Germany to much tighter tolerances and quality than our Chinese manufacturing partner is able to do with their current processes. With nearly 99% of all guns shooting well, the factory isn't interested in investing millions into manufacturing barrels in a more conventional fashion at this point.

For some additional insights on the factory barrels, check out this forum thread: https://community.hardairmagazine.com/threads/message-from-barra-airguns-on-accuracy.5468/ The most important detail there when it comes to the crown and lead is the fact that the bore cannot be guaranteed to be concentric to the barrel, making piloted hand reaming a necessity for the factory in salvaging barrels that do not meet their accuracy expectations."

General Airgun Question first rifle for backyard marksmanship? (under $500)

Hi everyone,

Important edit: I'm in the USA.

I recently started working on rifle marksmanship, and I love it. I've done a few appleseed shoots and specifically love the unsupported precision shooting. However, my local ranges are packed, my nearest BLM spot is far away, and, thankfully, I recently moved into a new place with a fairly large back yard and brick walls, which I feel might be reasonable for practicing basic air-rifle marksmanship with. My goal is to work on a KYL target, for which I'll create an appropriate and safe backdrop and catch.

While I recognize the recoil pattern is radically different than a firearm, I still feel I could get solid fundamentals with an air-rifle, specifically trigger pull and breath work.

I read the wiki but still have some additional questions.
Should I get a 10m specific rifle as those are target rifles?
I presume I want a PCP?
I presume I want .177?
Also, something quiet would be wonderful.

Short range target shooters, what are your recommendations in a beginner price range?

Small Game Hunting 🐿️ 🐇 🐦 Which version of the Alpha should I buy as a “grab and go” rabbiting gun?

Looking to take cottontail rabbits on my property within ~50 yards. I have a compact fixed 5x scope for optics.

Currently I’m looking only at the compact versions because I already have some longer guns, and easy handling/maneuverability is the goal here. I’m leaning towards the compact carbon bottle version.

But I’m tempted by the compact tube version. It’s even lighter and I like the fact that the rail/grip is slightly longer on the tube version. Shot count is low 10 shots regulated + 10 shots off-reg. Which is fine for hunting, but a bit annoying for target practice. It doesn’t hurt that it’s half the price, too.

Anyone have either of these versions? How does the bottle version affect handling?

PCP Proper handling question.

Thumbnail gallery
23 Upvotes

Hi, Since ammo is getting expensive and more complicated to shoot I just got my first pcp and I don’t know if I damage it.
Yesterday I was setting a new sling and while dismantling the butt I accidentally made the tank slip. The tank had 2800 psi. I was putting pressure on it to take it off and I never thought and the tank slipped and got loosen. It’s spink lock. So I set the tank in place and tighten the spin lock and that’s it. No problems, no leaks nothing. Today I was looking in chat gpt about proper handling and the ai told me is unsafe to do what I did with the tank and I might screwed my rifle and should send it to the factory and I’m like wtf… could you please point me in the right direction. Thank you.

But damn it.. it was cheaper than on sale on the crossman site.. I was nosey around the Gamo site.. I get regular email from all the sites and they had this only available desert swarm 10x gen2 kit wet dream deal and I was searching utube for a review on it and it sadly only makes like 590 fps.. sorry but that won't do in my squirrel woods... So I opened the crossman email and I been oogling the Optimus break barrel for a while now seeing awesome reviews on it.. 950 fps with 18 grain pellets is impressive without the he price tag.. but pyramid air has it on sale for 129 bucks.. yes single load.. I have the pro Magnum gen3i if I want an absolute workout 😂.. I fuckin had to.. I just had to.. you can't pass these things up especially when Norma 177 pellets are on sale for 1.99 a tin and your getting free shipping anyway.. you can't go wrong may as well add a couple tins of 14.3 hollow point to it's free shipping...
