So there I was, minding my own business...
I bought a Franchi Horizon Elite Varmint in .223rem second hand. It was barely fired but had been in a safe slightly unclean for a year and did have some rot setting in on the lands.
Didn't have much time, so I bought some cheap ammunition and got out to the range. Wanting to try something super cheap before going in on more expensive rounds I bought 50 GGG 55gr. This is a 1/9" twist.
I spent an hour wondering if it was me, the gun, the ammunition, or all 3. Very disappointing groups and I gave up after throwing 40 rounds downrange.
So I went home, scrubbed the life out of it, bought some more 55gr, some 62gr, and some 68gr.
This is the first time I've really seen the effect of grain weight on group sizes.
I tried some different 55gr to see if the quality would affect the group size as well as the weight and it did make a huge difference. 2.2MOA down to around 1MOA.
68gr got down to 0.8MOA and it could have been better if not for the shooter.
I had an option of buying an open box of Lapua 69gr but I'd already spent some money so decided against it. Now I wish I'd tried it.
Anyway, for anyone else buying a new-to-them rifle make sure you try out a bunch of ammunition in different weights and quality!
