MOD MESSAGE/ANNOUNCEMENT Community feedback needed (please vote)

Hi all,

Our mod team was recently approached by BetterHelp, an online subscription-based therapy provider, to do an AMA within our subreddit by a licensed therapist that specializes in child loss, perinatal mental health, and anxiety. They are willing to provide credentials to our mod team to verify the individual responding to questions, but our team has reached a moral impasse that we need the community to weigh in on.

Up until now, our team has had a blanket rule to not allow any companies, researchers, institutions, or anyone else with private interests to post within our community because our space is filled with so many vulnerable humans going through extremely difficult situations. The fertility space, in general, is ripe with opportunity for those that might take advantage of this vulnerability, much less a space like ours. That said, the message they sent was clearly written very thoughtfully, and the provider they’re willing to assign to the AMA would be willing to answer people’s questions about their worries, maybe provide healthy coping mechanisms, and describe the subspecialties of therapy that could be most beneficial to the people here.

IF we allow this AMA, it needs to be with the majority support of our community, so we are opening a poll for feedback. Other than voting in the poll, upvoting this post and providing even a short comment with your thoughts/concerns/ideas would help boost the visibility of this announcement to the maximum amount of sub members.

Of course, the major issue for us as a mod team is that we are NOT endorsing BetterHelp as a specific company or resource. For folks that are in areas where they aren’t able to find an in person provider, online therapy through any number of companies may be helpful. We are not partnering with them and the language in the AMA will be very clear about that. We will also be making sure that the provider answering questions in the AMA does not promote the BetterHelp brand.

If you’ve read this long, thanks for bearing with us. We appreciate how the people of this community come together to support one another and are grateful to help moderate.

Would you be interested in and supportive of an AMA provided by a therapist from BetterHelp, with the limitations outlined above?

Ultrasound FAQ Reference Guide

As an OBGYN ultrasound tech working at the general level here's a few things I would love the community to know based on common questions I see.

Most important rule of thumb: Worry when your doctor tells you to.

OBGYN docs are going to pay the most attention to the fetal pole and heart rate. Once a fetal pole is seen, the CRL (crown rump length) measurements are gold standard.

I'm worried about the heart rate:
-Check out this resource for pregnancies dating less than 7 weeks. Make sure to refer not to your LMP dates, but measured CRL dates: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/fetal-bradycardia?lang=us
-After 7 weeks a normal heartrate is between 120-180. It can temporarily dip below or temporarily rise above this range, but prolonged time above/below will definitely get your doctor's attention especially in third trimester. Generally out of range heart rates trigger NST (non stress test) or more monitoring.
The measurements are off:
Baby measures behind LMP. This is actually pretty common, we often see dates off up to a week either direction. We don't ovulate on the exact same day of the cycle each month or even have the same length of cycle. With irregular periods, PCOS, or unknown dates even larger gaps can be perfectly fine. If you aren't sure of your dates, trust the ultrasound. Even if you are sure of your dates, don't panic if they are a week off. Ultrasound measurements in early pregnancy are +/- 5 days.
I'm in limbo and don't know if my ultrasounds are diagnostic for loss:
By ultrasound there are strict parameters to diagnose loss. No one wants to get this wrong. Check out this resource for a list of parameters diagnostic for loss: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/early-pregnancy-loss-1?lang=us
Note, there is a second list of "suspicious for loss". Keep in mind the second list is not diagnostic, things can still turn out just fine.
I don't know when I should see what on ultrasound:
Things can vary a bit from person to person and do change *quickly* in early pregnancy. Check out this resource for what you can generally expect to see:
https://radiopaedia.org/articles/early-pregnancy?lang=us
Should I go to a boutique or get a private scan? Or push for an earlier scan?
They aren't legal where I am but here's a few things to consider if you plan to book a private scan. First, what are the qualifications of the person running the ultrasound? An ultrasound is only as good as the one performing it. It sounds as if these boutiques are NOT permitted to give much/any information. Will you spiral if you believe you see bad news and they cannot confirm or deny it? Also it seems that many cannot do vaginal ultrasound, which will make seeing a baby under 7 or 8 weeks challenging. If I had the option of a boutique ultrasound I would personally wait until 8 weeks and I would book it for a weekday. If they see something bad, it is not ideal to find out over a weekend when there is no option to follow up with your doc. An earlier scan often causes more anxiety, not less. It's SO hard to wait. But if you can tolerate it wait until 8 weeks or so.
The gestation sac is small/big:
-Gestation sac measurements are not terrifically accurate. Where I work once a baby is seen the gestation sac isn't measured. A mismatch between baby's size and the gestation sac size isn't uncommon. That said, a mean sac diameter of 25 mm or more without a baby is diagnostic for loss.
The yolk sac is small/big:
It starts teeny tiny, and will get a bit bigger. Once a baby with a good heartbeat is visualized, the docs I work for don't seem to care about the size of the yolk sac. A failed pregnancy with an expanded yolk sac (more than 6 mm) is a suggestive of chromosomal abnormalities.
We don't know where the pregnancy is:
The statistically most likely outcome is either a chemical pregnancy or just coming in for ultrasound too early for visualization. Ectopic can't be ruled out, and many wise ladies in the this sub have unfortunately experienced this and can give more info than I can. Statistically it's believed that only 1-2% of pregnancies are ectopic, but listen to your body. If the location is unknown, you should be getting close monitoring and follow up until the location is known or the pregnancy has ended.
-For a resource on ectopic pregnancy: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/ectopic-pregnancy?lang=us A note, a pseudosac is visualized in only 10-20% of ectopics. Therefore a sac in the uterus is suggestive of intrauterine pregnancy but can't be proven until a yolk sac is also present.
What about my HCG numbers?
I'm not an expert on this at all. But here's a resource: https://radiopaedia.org/articles/beta-hcg-1?lang=us
Why didn't my ultrasound tech tell me anything? And/or why were they so optimistic? Or, I had an ultrasound in the ER and they were very pessimistic.
Many locations an ultrasound tech can very much lose their job if they say aNyThInG. Where they are permitted to say certain things some ultrasound techs may just be hoping the best. We work with the public and we have seen some wild stuff. Additionally no one wants to call it a loss unless its 1000% certain. We know how devastating that news is. A side note here, often an ultrasound in the ER is not an ideal experience for the patient. The ER is staffed with techs that are much more versed in gallbladder and liver scans than they they are early pregnancy ultrasound. Don't hesitate to go the ER if you are having concerning symptoms, but do know the ER doc will make sure you aren't actively dying then will likely refer you back to your OB for follow up.
I'm just so anxious about it all:
Someone awesome wrote out these mantras. Maybe they will help: https://www.reddit.com/r/PregnancyAfterLoss/comments/14uhbdg/commandments_of_pregnancy_after_loss_this_is_now/
Also a podcast I personally found very helpful with anxiety: https://www.oneyoufeed.net/russ-harris-part-1/
https://www.oneyoufeed.net/russ-harris-part-2/

Today you are pregnant and this baby is so loved. I really am hoping the best for each of you. Those of us who have experienced loss.... you didn't do anything wrong, I promise. This is a club no one deserved to be in. And you are not silly, foolish, or dramatic for grieving your little babe for as long as you need to.

This post is written in honor of Eli, who died long before I could meet him. Rest in peace, buddy. I miss you tremendously ❤️

TW: Early MMC

The title sums it up, I fell pregnant earlier this year and unfortunately had a blighted ovum. This was devastating and I found out I have Factor Leiden V heterozygous in the process.

It's been 7 long cycles since and I've finally seen 2 lines this morning.

This is going to be a long journey, any tips are welcomed?

Reddit has been so heartwarming to go through the eternal wait.

Lots of love and blessings <3

Advice Needed hCG levels after medical MMC with suspicion of molar pregnancy

• Upvotes

9 weeks ago we lost our first child and first pregnancy to a missed abortion/missed miscarriage.
When I was admitted I was 13 weeks but our baby measured 9+4 on the ultrasound.
On said ultrasound the MFM had a little suspicion about a molar pregnancy so she offered to send for testing which we agreed to. Specifically partial molar pregnancy because there was a fetus
But the doctors/nurses accidentally threw out my placenta (very small not really visible fetus) so they never tested it. Which we are actually okay with on so many different reasons.
But because there was a slight suspicion and no genetic confirmation the gynecologist made a plan to do blood work instead
Plan: weekly hCG until 2 negative in a row (under 0,2) and one more 1 month after

And I am so so drained right now
My latest hCG was 2,8, my first was 160 (6 days after MMC)
We just want to try again. We firmly believe there was nothing wrong with the baby.
I haven’t been explicitly told to not become pregnant.

I asked my MFM if she could ask my gyno to maybe not do the test 1 month after. She said yes to asking in which I find it reassuring because in my head she wouldn’t have said yes if she still suspected it. She also told me that sometimes placentas look like that on ultrasound when the baby has passed

I feel like I can’t move forward and put this behind me

Tell me about your experience with something similar and what you did🙏🏼

Advice Needed 6w4d pregnant, hCG barely rising. Has anyone experienced this?

• Upvotes

I posted recently about how anxious I’ve been during this pregnancy after experiencing multiple losses.

Unfortunately, I got some concerning news today.
I’m supposed to be 6 weeks and 4 days. My hCG on Tuesday was around 5,300, and today (Thursday) it only increased to around 5,900.

My fertility clinic said my levels aren’t rising as they should and asked me to come back on Monday for repeat bloodwork and an early ultrasound to locate the pregnancy.

I’m honestly devastated and scared. I haven’t had any pain, so I don’t really know what to think or what to expect.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their hCG levels? What ended up happening? I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences, good or bad. I just want to understand what I might be facing.

Vent chemical

• Upvotes

There is nothing worse than finding out you’re pregnant and losing your baby all in one week… I got my initial beta on Monday, and it was 236 and today I went back for a 72-hour later draw, and my HCG was at 128.9.

This is my first positive pregnancy test after TTC for over 3 years and my first FET resulting in not implanting, and this one (my second FET) ending in most likely a chemical… Haven’t heard from my doctor yet. Frankly, I’m just completely numb.

I don’t even know what to expect in the coming days tbh…

Some positive news

Just wanted to share our experience (so far) for anyone searching like I did 😅

We started TTC in May 2025 and surprisingly got pregnant in November 2025. We ended up losing that pregnancy early and then got pregnant again June 2026 and unfortunately lost that pregnancy also. My OB referred us to a fertility clinic just because of the losses and my age (35F). We met with the clinic in July and started our testing and everything. They ran the APS panel on me and one value came back slightly elevated, other than that, and some sperm issues (1% morphology) everything came back normal. We did our first IUI 9/9 and it was successful!

My betas were more than doubling in 48 hours and everything looked good! I had some spotting episodes which sent me into a panic but it stopped quickly.

We had our first ultrasound at what I thought was 6w1d but baby was measuring 5w6d ( which lined up with my LMP, but 2 days later than IUI) we got to see the gestational sack, fetal pole and cardiac activity 🥹 fhr was 93 which the NP said they look for >100 at 6w but since baby was measuring 5w6d, she wasn’t worried. But of course, I searched high and low online for success stories because when you look it up, it says 93bpm is low and to be cautious.

We just had our second ultrasound today and baby is still measuring on track at 7w5d and fhr was 168bpm! I know it’s still so early but we are cautiously optimistic!

Just wanted to share incase someone else out there, is looking for some kind of reassurance after a “low” first fhr. 💕

Vent Frustrated and dealing with betas

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I am 6w5d today and somehow dealing with betas. I had my first call with a midwife on Monday and mentioned I had been spotting since 5w6d, and since I was going on a trip this weekend I would really appreciate a scan or some reassurance before I left. I know nothing is ever for certain, but it would have given me some peace of mind. The midwife decided to do betas, they were as following:

6w3d:14,500
6w5d:18,728

I’m still spotting at 6w6d, although it is intermittent and mostly brown, but since very few people take betas this late in early pregnancy it is difficult to figure out if my numbers are normal or not. I have two living children and have had two miscarriages so honestly I have no idea where this is going, but my kids are old enough where I honestly dont remember what was going on in early pregnancy at this point. I am just so frustrated and don’t even know if those numbers are all that great, since every six week betas post I seem to see is numbers below 4000 or above 40,000. Anyone have experience?

Advice Needed Low progesterone doubling hcg

I went to the ER on Saturday after finding out I was pregnant and had been bl33dinh for a week. I thought I was having my period and was not trying to get pregnant.

The er said it was a mc and that by Monday my hcg would drop. Well Monday came and it doubled (300's to 700's) . I retested yesterday and again a beautifully doubled hcg (over 1400). My progesterone on the other hand 5.9. They prescribed me progesterone to start today. I have to repeat labs every 48 hours and have my first ultrasound next Tuesday. I'm around 5 or 6 weeks.

Has anyone had this experience with a healthy pregnancy ? I'm spinning over everything but would love someone with similar experience good or bad.

HCG at 10po was 21.. restated at 12dpo and its 22. Anyone go through this? I know the pregnancy is not good but I’m hoping for a chemical pregnancy and not ectopic. Just looking for advice.

Beta 7.4 - 13DPO

I can’t seem to find anyone with a beta this low. I know it’s likely going to be a chemical pregnancy. I’m shocked my FRER tests picked up positives both on 13 and 14DPO (today). I go for a repeat blood draw tomorrow.

But I just want to know what to expect in terms of timing if anyone has had a beta this low — will I start to bleed in a few days? Few weeks? The evil thing is that today (14DPO) my breasts are larger/pregnancy symptoms are increasing. I just want this to be over with if it’s going to fail.

Do you think there's still hope?

PREGNANCY BACKGROUND

• Spontaneous pregnancy.

• Estimated ovulation: September 28–29, 2026.

• Last menstrual period: September 9, 2026.

BETA hCG & PROGESTERONE RESULTS

October 12:

• Beta hCG: 57 IU/L

• Progesterone: 59.1 nmol/L

October 14:

• Beta hCG: 87 IU/L

• Progesterone: 59.7 nmol/L

• 48-hour hCG increase: +53%

October 15:

• Beta hCG: 108 IU/L

• Progesterone: 59.0 nmol/L.

• 24-hour hCG increase: +24% (Equivalent 48-hour increase: +54%)

October 18:

• Beta hCG: 345 IU/L

• 72-hour hCG increase: +219% (Equivalent 48-hour increase: +117%)

October 20:

• Beta hCG: 713 IU/L

• Progesterone: 40.5 nmol/L

• 48-hour hCG increase: +107%

October 22:

• Beta hCG: 1,161 IU/L

• Progesterone: 34.1 nmol/L

• 48-hour hCG increase: +63%

ULTRASOUND FINDINGS

• The most recent ultrasound (today) did not show a gestational sac inside the uterus. 😔

• Fluid was seen inside the uterine cavity, suspected to be blood.

• Pregnancy location has not yet been confirmed.

MAIN CONCERNS

• The initial beta hCG rise was relatively slow, followed by a much faster increase.

• The latest hCG increase slowed to +63% over 48 hours.

• Progesterone has been declining.

• My main concern is a possible ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus).

• It is still unclear whether this is a viable early intrauterine pregnancy, an ectopic pregnancy, or a nonviable pregnancy.

Has anyone experienced a similar beta hCG pattern, declining progesterone, and no visible gestational sac at this stage? What was the outcome?

Advice Needed TV US at 6w4d no fetal pole

Hey all, my last period was 7 Sept and I started getting faint positives on 1st Oct.

According to dates, I am 6w4d pregnant.

I had a transvaginal ultrasound this morning in the UK and the sonographer clearly saw a gestational sac and yolk in the correct place in my uterus, but there was no visible fetal pole. I have had an asymptomatic pregnancy so far, aside from slightly tender breasts and occasional tiredness.

Does anyone have any experience of this and have a positive outcome to share? I am already guarding my heart and am fearing the worst (blighted ovum), so I am looking for positive stories. I have another scan in 7 days.

Thank you

TW: mention of positive FRER

Hey yall!

I was looking for some insight. I had a frozen embryo transfer 10/14 with a day 5 embryo. I have been testing positive since 4 days post transfer. On day 6 post transfer I went to the restroom and saw pink spotting when I wiped. Throughout the day it did become darker red and then tapered off. Woke up on 7dpt with more red blood when I wiped which again tapered off through the day and I thought I was in the clear. This morning when I went to the restroom there was some blood in the bowl when I peed and on the toilet paper. I will say that through this, it has only happened when I went to the restroom and wiped. I have called my clinic and they stated they aren’t concerned unless there’s clots and I’m soaking through a pad an hour but obviously I’m concerned. Throughout this whole ordeal I have been getting gradually darker FRER tests.

Has anyone else bled red blood throughout their wait for their beta and gone on to have a live birth

TIA!

Vent Low rising HCG

After failed IUIs and IVFs, here I’m pregnant with my miracle baby. Now looking for some point of view here.

Had my last period on 12/09

Tested on 19/10 got a dark positive and bhcg of 1651.
Tested again on 22/10, Bhcg only increased to 2053 in 72 hours.

Feel like the pregnancy was progressing great until I tested it (intentionally tested late) And started going downhill once I started obsessing over it.

Any opinions / positive stories / negative stories? I’m dying here.

20 weeks and don’t feel pregnant

I have my scan tomorrow but I can’t shake the feeling something is wrong.

I have had an easy sailing pregnancy to be honest and I actually only started feeling pregnant the other week when I was getting some shooting pains in my lower back / side of my leg and acid reflux but that has calmed down over the last 2 weeks.

I’m probably being paranoid as usual but because I can’t feel them move yet it’s making my brain go into overdrive.

I am just wanting to know if anyone else has experienced not feeling pregnant around this time and symptoms disappearing? Even my bump has seemed to go down!!

Advice Needed Lower normal range Progesterone in early pregnancy

Hiii, I not long found out I was pregnant got a hcg and progesterone blood test done at 3 weeks 2 days so 9dpo hcg come back at 21 which is fine cause it was not long after implantation but my progesterone was at 11.1ng or 35nmol this is within normal range for pregnancy but it’s in the lower end I’m kinda spiralling as I had a MMC earlier this year and I really want this baby. My OB gave me progesterone pessaries cause that’s what we discussed doing once I fell pregnant again, but that blood test was before medication was taken. I started medication the next day then I had a blood draw 48hrs after the first one and hcg had almost quadrupled so that was amazing and progesterone was at 22ng or 70nmol. Should I be worried? I guess I’m just stressed that it’s a bad sign that it was on the lower end of normal really hope some people have had successful pregnancies with that number. Midwife didn’t seem concerned at all but said OB was happy for me to take the supplements after my first draw.

hCG not doubling 5w

I had a chemical back in July and am pregnant again now. My OB wanted to wait until around 5w for hCG testing so I did that this week. First number was 3336 at 4+6/20dpo and I just got my 5+1/22dpo back and it’s only 5053, not even close to doubling. Blood draws were at the same exact time 48h apart.

How concerned do I need to be? My second results literally came in at 3am so I’m still waiting to hear from my OB but trying not to completely spiral until then but I’m so anxious.

hCG initially plateaued and dropped, then rose.. now a heartbeat but a very small sac. Has anyone experienced this?

I’m hoping to hear from anyone who has experienced something similar because the last three weeks have been such an emotional rollercoaster.

My last period started 1 September, and I first tested positive on 24 September.

These are my hCG results:
1 October: 143
3 October: 149
7 October: 104
9 October: 118
16 October: 444
19 October: 721
21 October: 1,110

I had an ultrasound 7 October, and nothing could be seen.

I started bleeding fresh red blood around 12–13 October. It’s been lighter than my usual period, but it has continued. With the initial hCG plateau and drop, I thought I was having an early miscarriage. When it started rising again, I became really worried about an ectopic pregnancy.

Today, 22 October, I had another ultrasound. They told me the pregnancy is in my uterus, and there was an embryo with a heart rate of 122 bpm. I was told it was measuring around five weeks, although I would be 7 weeks 2 days by my last period.

However, the gestational sac was apparently very small. The sonographer said the appearance was unusual.. honestly I’m just so grateful it’s in my uterus but also so confused, any insight would be amazing! I have a follow up appointment tomorrow with the hospital.

Advice Needed TW- MC? 1st probable loss. What to expect.

Impending miscarriage. What to expect?

I am(34F) 5w5d today. HCG is 1040. Barely 41% jump in 48hrs from 724. Trend is getting slower in the last 3 draws. I am aware that at this point, there's no way this pregnancy is viable. At 5w2d, US showed one gest sac in uterus. No yolk sac yet. Dr on that day said he was not worried about ectopic at that point. Unfortunately my OB is not available till day after tomorrow as where I live in, currently offices are closed due to festival. He has advised to go to ER of bleeding happens. This was my first IVF pregnancy. So I am on estrogen and progesterone. Dr has not asked to stop the medications yet.

Can anybody who has been through in similar situation advise the approximate timeline when I can expect to miscarry? Also since I am on estrogen and progesterone pessaries, are these supposed to stop bleeding to happen causing mmc or bleeding will start when it is supposed to? My heart is just....broken. Every other day with another miserable beta result, it just feels so hard to continue. If someone can help navigate this thing...I will be grateful.

Also, if i do try again, when is the earliest after a mc is it doable?

No heartbeat at 7–8 weeks? Very little embryo growth between scans

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for experiences from anyone who has been through something similar. I'm really anxious and struggling with the uncertainty while waiting for my next scan. This is my First Preganancy

Here's my timeline:

* LMP: 16 August 2026. My periods are irregular, so I may have ovulated later than usual.

* 17 September: Positive home pregnancy test.

* 23 September: Blood hCG was 1,850 IU/L.

* 7 October: First ultrasound showed a gestational sac and yolk sac, with a possible early fetal pole measuring 3 mm. No heartbeat was detected. I was told I might have ovulated later because of my irregular cycles.

* 21 October: Second transvaginal ultrasound, 14 days later. The embryo measured 4 mm, with no heartbeat detected. The scan estimated around 6 weeks of pregnancy, but based on my timeline, I believe I should be at least 7 weeks and 4 days.

* 21 October: hCG was 46,400 IU/L.

* 31 October: My next ultrasound is scheduled.

My midwife said the hCG level on 21 oct was a little reassuring and asked me to repeat the blood test.

Has anyone experienced something similar where a follow-up scan eventually showed normal growth and a heartbeat? I'd really appreciate honest experiences, as I'm finding the waiting and uncertainty difficult.

Thank you
