Weekly Cyclist Thread
The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.
You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.
Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Been a while.
Hi everyone, I hope you are all well. Had a baby last year, and today is the first time I've been out in over a year. I definitely need to build my riding fitness up. Absolutely amazing to be back out again

Which of these is best for getting to class?
Hi guys, I’m a college student that is looking in to getting a bike for getting around town—I have a car it’s just not always realistic to use (going to class, getting to parties, etc).
I was looking into some cheap ones on fb marketplace when I remembered that there are 3 abandoned bikes on the bike rack in my house. They got left when former tenants moved out, so they are free game.
They will all need some minor repairs, but there is a bike collective that can help me (I also know a friend that’ll get the locks off).
I know nothing about bikes so I was wondering if anybody could recommend which of these would be best? The town I live in is relatively flat and paved

FSA - Dude, where’s my grease?
In the photo above is the guts of my FSA headset bearing, no grease as usual, I usually open up FSA bearings for this reason, as they nearly always have this problem, but they aren’t the only one
I know the seal does its job but the thin grease on this would have been gone in a month and it was already starting to feel notchy (works amazing now there’s grease in it)
If you guys don’t already I’d highly suggest checking under the seals of your sealed bearings, you never know what that cartridge is hiding, this bearing will last years now it’s greased properly, but I would of never known if I didn’t check!

Title: Some rides are better when the world gets quiet 🌅🚲
Parked my bike between the trees just as the sun was setting. 🌳🌅
No rush, no noise, no destination in mind — just fresh air, a bicycle, and a little peace after a long day.
Sometimes, these simple moments make the best rides.
What do you prefer — peaceful forest rides or long open-road adventures? 🚴♂️

Is this integrated TT-style loop handlebar legal in UCI road races? (Java Vittoria Air)
UCI only shows rules on minimum measurements but nothing regarding this.

Bunch small questions; squiggly chain, tire clearance, cable routing, barrel adjuster replacement and top tube bag.
A few questions, pics/video at the end
Squiggly chain:
Edited out, as someone pointed out, it was the chain ring.
Tire clearance:
Is tire clearance related only to frame or can caliper brakes be an issue too? Got some cheap 25's, wanna try 28s or maybe 30s when i can swap them. My frame seems to have some space (i have no idea if it is enough) but idk if the brakes would make removing the wheel an issue.
Cable routing:
I have a feeling the cable covers are a tad bit long but also; are they routed correctly? maybe they should go on the opposite side? if that's the case, are the cables meant to cross down the tube? They also arerubbing the paint on the head tube, but i guess that's kinda normal, got some patches to put on the area.
Barrel Adjuster:
One of the barrel adjusters for the shifters broke its plastic cap. I can still use it with the help of some pliers but it'd be nice to replace it. Are these parts findable somewhere?
Top tube bag:
Can i use bags that take ahold of the top tube if my bike routes cables there?
PS: yeah i know there's a lot of rust, it was thrown in an open shed for 5 years (same as my kid) and im trying to get back into cycling. Absolutely no money to replace parts 😰

Upright(-ish) commuter recommendations for bumpy roads, a steep hill, and a future child seat.
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for a non-electric commuter bike to handle a 5-6 km daily ride to work.
I’m veryopen to the second-hand/used market to save money, but I need to choose between a few specific models that are actually available to me locally.
My absolute ideal benchmark bike is the Marin Larkspur 2. I like its step-through frame, the relaxed riding posture, and massive fat tires to absorb bumpy roads.
Unfortunately, the Larkspur 2 is completely unavailable in my local market (new and used), I need to find the next best option.
* I'm 1.74m, weighing \~74 kg. Total riding weight with a backpack/helmet is about 80 kg. I guess I'm looking for a size medium frame?
* I prefer a more upright, relaxed riding position (like a modern step-through or urban comfort bike) over an aggressive, forward-leaning mountain bike or fitness posture.
* On my way to work there are some poorly paved, bumpy roads. Most of the route is flat, except for one steep hill on my solo ride to work.
* In about two years, I plan to install a rear child seat to ride with my kid to kindergarten etc. The route to the kindergarten will be flat and standard (the hill is only on my solo work route). I need a sturdy frame so the kiddo won't shake (roads aren't the best paved), and a frame built to safely handle the added weight.
Because of the steep solo hill and the future weight of the child, I know I need a solid gear range and strong brakes.
Used AI to find the closest models to the Marin Larkspur 2 that are available (new or used):
Trek Verve 2 Disc Lowstep; some Trek FX variations are also available.
Specialized Sirrus X 2.0 ST. There are other Specialized and Sirrus models available too (not in the ST configuration).
Marin Kentfield 1 ST (Step-Through). Fairfax 1/2 are also available.
Evoke City Retro / SL700 (Local Comfort Brand).
Given there are some bad roads, the hill, and the future child seat, how do these stack up against the Larkspur 2 experience? Which would you choose?
Open to other models too, not sure if they'll be available to me though.
Thanks!

warning do not buy ralson inner tubes
hello to start my story my back wheel was leaking, so i had it replaced by a local bike guy with a ralson inner tube, and only after 13 days it has started leaking from around where the rubber meets the stem so i went back, he hasn't had issues with ralson before, so i got a new one but from the same batch and again only after 12 days it has started leaking from around the stem. btw i inflate my tyre to 4 to 4.5bar recommended pressure written on the tyre is 3.5 to 5.3 bar. im so annoyed.

Most highly sought after racing bicycles of all time?
What bicycles have been released that were the most sought after in their day? Held up over time or abead of their time? The benchmark amongst other manufacturers? Highly raved about when released? I feel like today's bikes are all so close that nothing really breaks the mold like even a decade ago...

Rode up Pico de Veleta in Sierra Nevada, what climbing to ~3,400m on a road bike is actually like
Finally did the Veleta climb out of Granada and filmed it. A few notes for anyone thinking about it:
- It's long. From Granada it's roughly 45 km and around 2,600 m of climbing, mostly steady 6-8% up the A-395 past the ski station at Pradollano. No brutal ramps, it just never stops.
- Around Hoya de la Mora (about 2,500 m) the road closes to cars, the surface gets rougher and the air gets noticeably thinner. Same effort, fewer watts, so pace it lower than you think.
- It can be hot at the bottom and properly cold at the top, even in summer. Bring a gilet and gloves for the descent.
- Gearing: I'd want a compact with a 32 or 34 at the back.
- Best window is roughly late June to early October, once the snow has gone and before it comes back. Go early to dodge the heat and the afternoon wind.
Video of the ride if you want to see the road and conditions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmr13vBXGuo
Anyone else done it? Curious whether people start from Granada or drive up and start higher.
