News from Strava HQ Shoutout thread: who earned it in October?

Marathon season's in full swing, the days are getting shorter, and someone in your feed did something worth celebrating this month, maybe it was you. A fall race PR, a comeback after time off, a costume 5K you actually trained for, a friend who finally hit their goal. Post it here (activity must be public). Some of these end up on Strava's Stories and socials.

Link the public activity or describe it, add a line on why it matters, and tag the athlete if it's not you (only if they'd be into it).

Own effort or someone else's, both count. Whatever you're chasing next, there'll be a place for it here.

I tried to log in using Google, using an email, it just keeps looping the home screen of the login page and doesn't let me log in into the app, the site works just fine, tried downloading an apk, tried clearing the cache/data, tried downgrading the app, nothing seems to work

General Question Instant Workout Feedback

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've been looking more at the Instant Workout recommendations lately as I'm between plans currently. Some of the workout suggestions have been great! Many of the calculated routes for running out cycling activities would NOT be good to use (traffic/ lighting/ oher safety concerns).

There's a way to give feedback (screenshot). Is the feedback strictly for the suggested workout? The route? Or the combination?

FYI Strava Hiking vs Running Segments

Yesterday I went back to hike Overlook Mountain in the Catskills. I finished and I got notified of a PR on all segments. I thought...this is odd I went fast but Im positive I went much faster. Found my 2018 climb and sure enough I had made it to the top 10 min faster. It took me a while to figure out why the two weren't related. My original hike was labeled a run.

This makes ZERO sense. Hike and run segment leaderboards should be the same. They are both under foot power and there is no meaningful difference. Does this mean there are separate walking segment leaderboards too? So instead we have this fractured leaderboard that means nothing because you might be KOM as a runner but a hiker really holds it or vice versa. In fact the segments themselves are completely different and looks like largely duplicated.

My hikes are very often a combo of running/hiking...I mean most mountains you can't run up the whole way unless you are the elite of the elite or its a small one.

Anyways this now explains why I often don't see some of my friends showing in my hiking segments. Just figured I would share because this doesnt make any sense.

General Question Does anyone actually like this "Exercises" feature?

Thumbnail

I am sure the "exercises" feature is adored by some out there, but I find it strange and frustrating.

For the uninitiated, the Strava app now is adding a section to strength workouts called "Exercises" where you can break down the specific movements you've done during a workout. Unfortunately, I don't have a fancy watch that can identify each of my reps and sets, nor have I the interest to manually go into the app and manually log each one every time I lift a weight.

I would prefer if each of my workouts was not tagged as being "9 sets of unknown'", as if I am spending an hour in the gym every morning doing mysterious slows reps of a classified exercise.

Has anyone figured out a way to turn this off and stop it from showing up on logged activities? I can't seem to find an answer online... Send help

General Question Strava and AI

I know Strava works with Claude but I pay for ChatGPT and don’t want to pay for Claude too. And I have health information in ChatGPT so it makes sense to link it to Strava.

How do I do this? Will Strava eventually sync with all AIs?

General Question What wearable device are you using for Strava?

I'm currently using an Apple watch Series 7 Nike.
I feel I'm not using it to its full potential and thinking of switching to a more fitness based device. Definitely needs GPS, I don't usually carry my phone when I walk / cycle.

Other features I'd like are sleep tracking and AFib (ECG) detection. Bonus of I can keep my golf swing tracker on my wrist too 🤣

General Question Mobile data usage shot up today (Android)

Post image
9 Upvotes

I got an alert on my phone that my data usage for October is 2.25 GB. I click on it and I got this graph. My phone plan says that from Oct. 1 to yesterday, I had used 0.39 GB. I checked other days that I have used the app and it's normally around 75 MB for the same amount of activity. I did notice that when I went to start my walk today, it asked me to choose what kind of activity I was going to be doing (walk, run, ride, more) rather than have me select it when I'm done. I selected walk so maybe that's the reason? Usually it has me as run and I switch it to walk afterwards. Was there an update in the past couple days that it now has me select the activity beforehand? I'll select run next time and see what happens.

General Question Segment leaderboards that don’t make sense

How common is it to see leaderboards that don’t add up?

I just completed a ride with a 7.5km segment. It’s hilly (for the Netherlands) but in the end you finish around the same height as where you started. I averaged 42.3kmh with 303 watts. Wind was quite nice I think.

I was surprised when that only got me up to around 4500th place, but I wasn’t looking for or expecting a kom anyways. I did a little digging tho and the people around me have the same reasonable wattage, but if I look at the current kom holder he averaged 60kmh with only 60 watts more?!?

I know drag plays a big role and this was probably a group ride but how could that be possible? As I’m new to cycling and I have no friends to ask, I wonder if it’s common that segments have fake leaders and no one does anything about it? Or is it possible that it was real? Or could it be underreading on his PM?

For context, 80.000 people completed this segment, his attempt is 5 years old.

General Question Has anyone else’s app made their music quiet?

I have been using Strava for several months now and had no trouble, I don’t use Spotify but I do use YouTube to listen to music while I run, it’s what I’ve been doing for a very long time.

But yesterday when I began my run it seemed to turn my phone volume all the way down, I held onto my increase volume button and it showed max volume, yet I could still barely hear it. It was when I closed the app that it seemed to fix my issue, the timer kept going and yet when I ran a mile and opened it again, it was telling me my pace was like 35 minutes and that I only ran .20 miles, I know my route well and I know that it was a mile and that I was very fast this time at that.

I kept testing it out and yeah, when the app is running it lowers my volume to near silence but close it out and it’s back to normal. Does anyone else have this issue?

General Question Music while running sounds low even though volume is at max

Recently, for no apparent reason, Strava lowers the volume of my music while using "Run" workout. Music is normal level when I open the app but as soon as I go into workout section it lowers. This happened on IOS 26 and still on IOS 27. I have tried turning off voice cues, resetting device...etc but nothing seems to work. It is the same volume as when the voice cues are talking, but it doesn't go back to normal. Any help appreciated!

GPS Question Strava

Who converted my km to miles?
How do I revert this?

I feel demotivated seeing 4 miles on my Strava yet I ran 6.4km!🤣
Is this rant even valid?

FYI Challenge

I participate in a challenge in two parts. I sync two activities, one starting 4pm and the other 5pm.

The second activity completes 50% of the challenge and the first activity completes the full challenge.

Shouldn’t it be opposite since the first activity started earlier in time?

The challenge in question is the Nespresso Active Mornings.

General Question Latest update has Strava turning down/off my music, how to fix?

I’m listening to my music while preparing for rides. I open up the app and hit the play button to record, and it stops my music. When I press play on my music again, now there’s a cap on the max volume that doesn’t stop capping my music volume until I end my ride and exit out of strava.

Any ideas?

This is an accessibility fix for me, and I’m not interested in using the app any more if it wants to mess with my jams. They’ve already stripped so many features from the free version it’s barely worth it to even open the app any more— maybe this is a sign to finally kick it to the curb.

Thank you!

General Question New to Strava... I like it, BUT

Iphone and Apple Watch user, I used to use "Zones" but was convinced to give Strava a go.

I really like the app, I'm still on the free trial... my only issue is that Strava cannot pickup any of my past workouts. I have done the sync with Apple Health, but it only shows workouts from the day I installed Strava.

This could really be a deal breaker for me, is there a way to fix this? is there some setting I am missing?

General Question Help! I can't open my Strava app anymore!

I am using Xiaomi Watch 2 and has Strava on the watch ever since. Started using it since June, and everything is all good and was able to use it on my walk everyday.

Today, this happened.

I was walking as usual from my workplace to my home around 50 mins approximately. I do my usual routine of pausing my walk progress, remove the watch and then this time, instead of leaving it on my computer table, I have it charge before cleaning the house. After I cleaned the house and about to resume my walk from earlier, I saw that the watch went back to it's home page when I wore it again. And when I tried opening the Strava app again, it was stuck on the logo for a quick second, 1-2 secs. and then closes it. I tried it again, still the same issue.

My Wear OS is 5, Strava app is up to date, and even my watch is up to date as well. I tried power cycling (or restarting) my watch, still the same issue. I tried clearing its cache and even my data, still the same issue. My last resort: I uninstalled the app, and then reinstall again. No use, still the same issue.

Did someone had this similar issue before? I'm about to crash out right now, I'm sorry.

3rd Party App I made an app were you can draw a shape for a route and download the GPX to create beautiful Strava Art

saw a lot of artists trying to create beautiful posts, thought it might make sense to build a canvas. Here's the app https://drawarun.com/

All you have to do is to export it as GPX as well. Let me know if anyone has any thoughts

Sync Question How do you get your gym machine cardio into Strava?

Most of my cardio is on the bikes at my gym (Technogym) with a Polar chest strap. The bike connects to my phone, but I couldn’t get the treadmills to connect to anything, so those sessions never show up on Strava unless I add them manually.

It bugs me more than it should tbh, my weekly totals end up way off and I can’t really tell if I’m improving when some of my sessions aren’t there.

What do you guys do? Manual entry, trust whatever your watch records, or just skip it?

3rd Party App I made an iPhone app for Health to Strava sync in the background, using your rules: like "only runs" or "only above 10km"

Strava either uploads EVERYTHING (like my walks with the cat), or I have to manually click "upload" each and every time.

So I built WorkoutPort, as a solo developer.

Set your rules, enable background auto-sync from Apple Health to Strava. For example:

  • Running: upload runs over 3 km recorded on my Apple Watch
  • Cycling: upload weekend rides over 20 km that have a GPS route
  • Strength: upload sessions lasting at least 30 minutes from my chosen workout app, starting today

A few other useful features, because I couldn't bring myself to stop developing:

  • Automatic activity titles: Smart names or your own templates
  • Your whole month on a map: on a standard or satellite map
  • Route Explorer: browse previous routes by date range and workout type
  • File exports: FIT, GPX, TCX, CSV or Markdown
  • Privacy: workout data stays on your device unless you choose to sync, export or share it. You control which workouts get sent to Strava

Rule-based Strava sync is free. Pro adds features including styled route and monthly recap image exports.

Now

  • Get Lifetime Pro for $9.99 instead of US$19.99 with REDDIT50. Until 4 Nov!
  • Send me any feature requests! Always welcome! I’ll keep building WorkoutPort
  • Give me an honest App Store review, this would help me a lot as a solo developer
