Mod News About Repost Bots: New Automod Rule; Possibility of False Positives

As some of you have noticed, this sub is a fairly common target for repost bots (my thanks to those who have noticed and reported them). DuplicateDestroyer used to address most of those, but it no longer works after some Reddit API changes.

I recently discovered some Automod settings that likely can help (based on karma); however, this can sometimes trigger a false positive on questions from new users. I try to review the modqueue and approve these at least once per day, but I am studying for the bar exam and may not have lots of time.

If you've submitted a topical post but it's been removed by Automod, give it about an hour or so, then feel free to send a modmail and I'll approve it if I haven't done so already. Thanks!

I doubt twitter links are allowed so I just took a screenshot of the jist of it. It’s an ai video of the new Tesla using it’s “jet boosters” to shoot cyclist off the road.

Being shared and joked about by a sitting US senator.

We’ve got a lonnngg way to go.

How much is too much headwind to commute?

I haven't given up my car completely (sorry) and haven't transitioned to commuting to work by bike yet but I really want to. Even with the cold northern winter coming soon I'm not worried about that, but I keep using headwind as an excuse to keep driving the car to work. How much headwind is too much for you? For the past week we've had 10+mph wind with gusts up to 30mph, and most have been headwinds or crosswinds. Just curious how others feel and how they decide between bike commuting or just calling out... I mean taking the car.

All other errands I run or places I go in town I have been doing by bike, but a headwind of 10+mph with even stronger gusts while also climbing over 250ft the whole ride to work I feel like I'm just making excuses because I'm not a morning person. Maybe if I had a cupholder for my coffee then I'd be more ambitious to bike commute.

I use this telescoping insta 360 selfie stick with some flouro tape on the end to help drivers respect the 1m passing distance here. I hold it with my 2 small fingers against the bar grip. Collapse it into my pocket when its not needed. Works well and most drivers appreciate the courtesy.

Ugh, life’s been rough lately. I got sick last month but got pushed out into the world when I was sick, got rained on and got even sicker.

Im trying to work and my only real bill is about $100 per month, since I don’t even have a working phone. Being homeless is difficult, but I manage.

Anyway, because I didn’t have a way to call landscapers for estimates on hauling yard debris away, I just modified my BOB trailer to haul some clean plant detritus away.

I just chucked it off a cliff into woodlands. It’s not going to propagate or anything bad.

This is going to take me five years e_____e

Strange Bike Lane Design

This is a Google maps picture of the route I take home on my daily commute from work. I marked the intended route utilizing the bike lane in green, my route in blue, and traffic merging onto the freeway in yellow.

I think this peculiar island creates a potential unsafe blind spot that could result in a right hook collision between a speeding car and an invisible bicycle.

For reference where this picture is taken Bicycles are allowed on sidewalks if they yield to pedestrians and allowed on roads riding to the far right as practicable fully permitted to take the entire right lane when required while the speed limit is under 45mph. Cyclists are also allowed to take the left lane when setting up for a turn. They are encouraged but not required to use the bike lanes. Beyond that they are to follow all road rules just as other road users. Including full stops at red lights and signalling.

I'm interested in y'all's thoughts?

What's your commute's sinuosity?

I recently learned about sinuosity, which measures how winding a route is compared to the straight-line distance between two points.

The formula is:

Sinuosity = Actual route distance ÷ Straight-line distance

For example, my bike commute to school is 6.8 km, while the straight-line distance is only 4.9 km.

My commute's sinuosity is 6.8 ÷ 4.9 ≈ 1.39.

I'm curious about everyone else's commutes! What's your sinuosity, and how do you commute (walking, cycling, driving, public transport, etc.)?

Bonus points if you have a particularly winding route!

My province is ripping up bikelanes and preventing new ones from being built. I decided to quietly protest by getting a new commuter bike. (NBD!)

So as my form of protest to the bike lane removal saga and Anti-Bike Lane/Pro-Car Legislation created by the province, I decided to treat myself and buy/build up a new commuter for myself.

I want to thank this sub, r/bikewrench , and r/bicycling for the help in making some of the decisions.

This sub helped a ton with the panniers, and general info on options like fenders! Bikewrench helped with some more niche items (Velox rim tape for example.) I spent most of this year building up my own endurance, practicing navigating to my workplace on the weekends, biking either in the morning or in the afternoon on weekdays, to the point where the 20k ride to work is nothing. I think I am in quite good shape compared to where I used to be. I also enjoy having a laugh as I swoosh by stopped traffic on my way home, and the bike rides on the weekend all summer and fall have made me generally just happier all around.

I'm pretty pleased with the end result for the bike. Trek FX Sport in Aluminum (as I am budget conscious and this is a commuter), Trek Fenders and MIK rack, Ortlieb Sport Rollers, Topeak aero saddlebag + Amazon special frame bag (for when I am riding without the Ortliebs but still want a spare tube and basic maintenance kit), a bell, a Giant HL800 light for when it is a little dark out, Trek Line Elite pedals, a nice contrasting water bottle, and a specialized water bottle holder (because I like the design). Also, a kickstand because of this thread.

Feel free to 🔥roast🔥 my setup 😄.

Night Commuting Advice

Edit: thank you to everyone who gave advice, really helpful! This was my first Reddit post too and it’s been great :)

Hello! I am in need of some advice.
I have a job offer that I am considering, however it involves some late night finishes that would mean I miss the last train and bus home. Taxi’s would be expensive, so my only real option is to cycle. (I don’t have a car, and my area is not covered by any carshare schemes).

Google maps say there are two possible routes home - one via a canal path (unlit, pedestrian/cycles only, 10 miles) and one via cycle route/roads (lit, cars, 8 miles). The job runs on a six week rota cycle, where 2 of those six weeks would have 4 midnight finishes each:
Week 1-4: trains
Weeks 5&6: total 8 midnight cycles home over these two weeks (I could get the train to work, not home)

I am usually a fit person although I haven’t exercised in a while due to other factors. I am looking to build up my fitness by some home workouts and running mainly as I don’t particularly enjoy cycling as a hobby. My concerns are:
Is this late night cycle possible?
If it’s only for two weeks of every six, how much on the other weeks would I need to cycle to ensure those two weeks aren’t bloody horrible? To keep up fitness

Any advice is appreciated!

What can I modify in this bike so it becomes more of a commuter bike?

Thumbnail

\[Context, question in the end\]

So, I recently moved to a new city where It's much better to move around cycling (car traffic here is really intense all the time), so I started to ride my old bike(a Caloi 100 from 2010 maybe?) (going back an forth to college, back home, between campus...).

I had to change some parts, so I got:

New tires (old ones were cracked, and I also took the oportunity to get smoother ones)

New tubes

Changed the back rim to a double-wall

New changers

New handlebar grips

Also installed a slimmer seat and a back rack.

I had a lot done, and yet, I was frequently having to repair new problems that appeared; so I got a new bike (the one in the last photo, caloi Aspen, an brazillian brand and model) that is really good, much better components, and event tho it's more of a MTB, it doesn't really handle the MTB job, since it's a good entry level bike, but not as strong as a MTB should be.

I'm using the new one by now, and I wanna take the advantage of owning a reliable bike that allows me to move around, to spend the proper time and money to repair and modify my old one to a commuter (the old one suits this job much better, since it's way ligher than the new one, that wheighs around 16kg).

The main problems I'm facing:

\- I'll have to take the new rim to the mechanic that changed it (he changed the whole wheel) cause the cube (I don't know the name in english, but I mean the part of the wheel than contains the bearing) is dilated, and the bearing is getting out ou place as I ride

\- I'm having trouble finding a way to make it more agressive to ride: the handlebars position are originally intended to ride in a 90⁰ relaxed position, and I don't know how to change it. Do I HAVE to change it?

\- wanna get rid of this stem, but I have no idea how do I change it, since I don't know which components are compatible with the bike. BUT if there is any other way to make the bike more dinamic without having to replace this piece I would love to know.

\- Although I got the back rack, I still haven't found a way to carry my backpack. What do you guys recommend?

Last but not least:

The new bike is awesome! Love riding it, got accessories, but, since it's too heavy, I feel like it make the jod a little harder, and I don't wanna add even more weight with a rack for example, so I end up riding whith my backpack in my back, which results in a lot of weight in my back, making it harder to move around carrying the stuff I need to medical school. So, I also would like to hear from you guys if you have any ideas on how to make it more confortable to carry my stuff.

Thank you in advance!

I'm sorry if I wrote anything wrong, I'm from Brazil, so I don't write in perfect english, and I also have a limited bike vocabulary in english.

Edit¹: handlebars are ridiculous in the photos cause I was rotating it like crazy, trying to find a better position to ride. I'm gonna turn it back to the correct position soon 😂

Turning this unused dslr bag as bar bag

Right now i just loop some fabric from a totebag handle, and use it to tie the bag to the bar. The fabric has a good grip, but i might swap it for a strap later. So i can take it off and re-attach it quickly.

Dallas Bike Commuting (it can be done)

I’ve been utilizing the train and bike for the past few months but now the weather is cooling down, I’m looking forward to bike commuting the entire way in! It can be daunting but there are plenty of trails and quiet neighbourhoods to dip into! (Hoping to add a rear rack to get my backpack off my back)

I picked up a 36 lb Tesoro Neo - I haven't really modded anything. I've always wanted a brooks saddle, and I felt like this is the big to throw it on. I commute in Salt Lake (south east corner through Holladay area). I have a panier converable backpack for my laptop and a quick change in clothes, and the office has showers, but no bike locker. I carry it in the elevator in the morning at 6, but haul it down 4 flights of stairs in the afternoon so I don't crowd the elevator. This is my first ebike, but I've been riding for years. Riding up the mountain on the way back home with a little boost is niiiiice.

Lets you choose your city, filter by minimum temps and maximum rain and snow.

The takeaway: You can probably bike comfortably more days than most people think.

He's from Canada and thinking about winter, so he forgot to put a maximum temperature filter.

Bike Commuter Problems

They put up these awful security checkpoints at the universal studios pedestrian mall, so today when the protracted examination of my pockets' contents came to the keychain capsule containiny the screws for my Pitstoppers, i found myself at a real loss trying to articulate their purpose to a rent-a-cop.

Fjällräven Skogso Padded for cycling in autumn/winter?

Looking for a good everyday autumn/winter jacket. I commute by bike for 15–20 minutes each way.

I really like the design of the Fjällräven Skogso Padded, but how does it handle rain while cycling? My Patagonia Everyday Rain Jacket has been great for waterproofing in spring/summer, so I’d like something reliable for colder, wetter weather.

Would you recommend it, or should I look at something else?
