Dipping my toe

I need another bike like I need a hole in my head.

In the last 16 or 17 years of riding, I've gradually assembled a stable of bikes that cover all of my riding NEEDS. Not that I have a true collection of collector's caliber, but I have a road bike, 3 CX bikes of slightly different cuts, and a hardtail MTB. I sold my townie 26" for space for CX bike (New Bike Day April of 2026).

What I didn't need this month:

But hell, for State Bike Warehouse prices and in my size.... Financial toe-dip.

I'm maxed out on seat-post height (XL size) and yes, the levers look like they're pointed way low, but sheeeeit. I'm going to drop these tires into the single digits and see what winter can be. At least once or thrice.

Upgrades if this becomes a regular: tubeless rims/wheelset. Hydraulic brakes. But this is just a dabble, for now.

Typically super bummed this time of year as our riding season close to over. This year I can’t wait to get the new Farley in the snow.

Just picked up my first fat bike yesterday! I always saw these when I was a kid, so I was interested for a while. Barely used, and I snagged it for $150 and immediately aired up and went on a trail ride! Happy to be part of the fat bike club

I stopped in to the bike shop to ask about something unrelated and they had one of these. This replaces my old Northrock XC00. I plan to swap out the MT-200 brakes for something Sram as I ride all winter in cold temps.

PNW Components Coast Suspension Dropper Post a gimmick or worth it for a little more comfort?

Context.. Trek Farley5 is and will be likely be my only bike. Zero plans to replace the Farley unless I stumble across an EX8.

Just swapped in a Manitou Mastadon Comp fork and absolutely love the performance improvement.

I ride lots of local blacks that are mostly roots and rocks, and as much sand on the outer beach. Even with tire pressure dialed in the ride can be pretty rough on your butt and back.

If you own or owned a PNW Components Coast dropper, what is/was your experience? Gimmick or worthwhile for a little comfort?

weird leaks

Hey guys. My tubeless front tire was a bit low yesterday after filling it two weeks ago, so I topped it up and went out for 1/2 an hour. Today it was totally flat. I filled it up thinking slow leak but only got 5 min out of it. Here is a pic after I filled for the third time. It has a million little leaks - both in the rim and the sidewall too. Anyone seen this?

TPU & Pannier Racks

Anyone know of any new fatbike tpu tubes on the market recently (other than revoloop)? Same for pannier racks, anything affordable out there? The prices of any racks I've seen are always ridiculous.

Had it sitting on the balcony at the beach hotel. The heat must have increased the temp enough to blow out. Wild!

Costco Northrock XC00 fat bike upgrade advice

Looking for any advice on upgrades to this entry level fat bike I got for a steal at Costco. Specs are in the photos. Rider is 5’ 10” and 200lbs. Mainly used for pulling a 2 kid bike trailer, 30 mile rides on the weekends, light single track rides through forest / woodland - northern Illinois. As you can imagine, the stock parts feel pretty cheap. TIA!

New chain, cassette, pulley wheels, tires, cables and some elbow grease. These tires are for the fall weather but I've got studded 45nrth tires, should it snow/ice. I built this nearly 20 years ago and still love it

Absolut the most comfort gravelbike I have ever owned and ridden - also a gravelbike that can do a lot of singletrack and touring / monster versatile and yes it’s not a race machine and I’m 5 minutes slower then the neighbours gravel race machine - but I’m smiling more and are not beaten up in my arms / albows and writs and this bike always gets me in a anti stressing mood …so thanks to the bike industry that provides us with parts and bike like this - happy trails

How much does tire pressure change the feel of a heavy fat bike?

I’ve been looking into fat-tire e-bikes, and the Aniioki A8 Ultra got me curious about how tire pressure affects a heavier setup. With fat bikes, I know lower pressure can help with traction and comfort on loose surfaces, but I’m wondering how much difference it makes when the bike itself is already pretty heavy. I imagine going too low could make pedaling feel sluggish, while too much pressure might make rough trails less comfortable.

For those who ride fat bikes regularly, how do you adjust your tire pressure for pavement, gravel, sand, or dirt? Does rider weight and the bike’s overall weight change your approach much? I’d be interested in hearing what has worked for you.

I bought some hubs thanks to you guys!

These are 15x150 and 12x197 hubs.

After researching and reading the comments I've decided to go with NEXTIE rolling star hubs as my main hubs.

The reason I went with NEXTIE is there freehub design is base off on DT swiss star rachet design which is proven to be reliable and cost was not as crazy as other brands.(Paid around 50,000jpy total)

I opt for the HG free hub steel body and swap the 36t to a 60t helical rachet.

The second contender was an accidental find thru AliExpress recommendation.

The non logo hubs sold by Timetec (paid 11,300jpy)

These are also DT SWISS inspired rachet hubs.

Upon closer view the hub seem to be really a well thought, the freehub body is steel and the rear axle is also steel unlike the NEXTIE hubs which are made from alloy.

Can't wait to have them build up soon

NEXTIE HUBS will be laced with 26 mulefute 80

Timetec HUBS will be laced with 27.5 Duroc 40
