Vent Attraction, safety, and gender expression

Hi all,

I'm a late bloomer and in my 40s. I have always liked men who are androgynous or feminine. It's because I feel safe around them. I'm genderqueer, omnisexual, omniromantic, demisexual, and demiromantic.

There's a lot of judgment against people liking people whose gender expression is different from ’the norm’. It feels terrible because, to me, it has nothing to do with sex.

Advice Crush on Flatmate

I'm a university student, studying abroad halfway across the world. I've happened to find myself crushing very hard on one of my flatmates. Although I'd really like to pursue a romantic relationship with him, that is if he feels the same way, there are obviously some obstacles to doing so.

First and foremost, I'm an international student. I'm only going to be here for a year.

Secondly, I've never been in a relationship before. I'm (20f) a little scared about how to navigate this. How do I handle myself if he doesn't feel the same way? I really don't want to come across as needy or someone he'll need to tip toe around if it doesn't go right.

I'm unsure if I've given enough context here but I guess I'd like some advice about how to deal with my feelings. I've known him for nearly 5 months. This is the first crush I've had on somebody where I've actually wanted to be with the person.

**I'd also appreciate if the advice didn't dissuade me from doing anything solely because he's my flatmate.

edit: To clarify, we have hung out once outside the flat. We went on a walk and enjoyed our time together. I asked him but I didn't clarify whether it was a friendly hang out or a date. Honestly, I didn't want it to be a date but at the same time ai was so worried he'd invite other people.
