Shough has had a few valleys and some peaks this season. Through what is roughly the 1/3 of the season, let's see how he's doing.
On the first slide, Shough has a negative value vs an average starter, but at -.02, that is negligible as he is 19th in the league. He is ahead of Darnold, Herbert, Penix, Stroud and Brissett. He is behind Bo Nix and actually QBs having a good season.
On the second slide, it show's that he's below average in EPA but above on completion % over expected. He is slightly behind Jacoby Brisset, but essentially his contemporary in these. He is safely a top 18 QB using these metrics.
For counting stats, he's 7th in yards and 8th in YPG. His average yards per attempt at 6.3 ranks 24th in the league, and that's commensurate with the bottom tier passers. He's tied for 8th in TDs but his 5 picks is tied for 6th in the league. He's 10th in the league for completion percentage at 66.8%. He's tied for 8th with 13 sacks taken.
For the usual QB ratings, Shough's 59.5 QBR ranks 15th in the league while his 88.6 rating places him at 19. He's ranking higher than Stafford in rating.
Here, the advanced analytics and typical ratings/counting stats thus far show that Shough is average to slightly above league average QB. He's had a roller coaster ride this season with lows in the first half of the opener to the last game, to extreme highs in 2nd half of Ravens/Lions games and first 35 minutes of Raiders games. I paced this out to 5 games before compiling to even out these performances. Looking at QBR, the only QB that I am surprised is ahead of him is Bryce Young. He is ahead of Herbert and CJ Stroud, which I would not anticipate he would've been at the start of the season. Darnold too.
