When I was in high school, my neighbor was really struggling with her yard. She spent hours out there every weekend planting, weeding, and watering, but nothing seemed to flourish.
One night around 1 AM, I decided to mess around a bit. I went out with a bag of high grade fertilizer I had leftover from a project and heavily treated her entire flower bed and vegetable garden.
Within a few weeks, her garden absolutely exploded. She had huge, vibrant blooms and massive tomatoes. I decided to lean into it hard. Every time I saw her outside, I would make these totally outrageous claims about her skills. I’d yell across the fence stuff like, "You must be a botanical prodigy!" or "I’ve never seen tomatoes this big in my life, you have a literal magical touch!" She was so proud that she started inviting people from around the neighborhood over to show off her suddenly incredible "green thumb." She fully bought into the hype that she was a master gardener.
The real chaos started the following year: I didn't fertilize her yard at all.
Predictably, her garden went right back to being scraggly and struggling. But instead of just keeping quiet, I started laying on the subtle jabs. When her plants started wilting, I’d look over the fence with a sigh and say things like, "Man, what happened? Did you lose your touch already?" or "Guess last year was just beginner's luck, huh?"
She spent the entire season completely spiraling, buying random pH testing kits, changing her watering schedule, and trying to figure out how she "ruined" her magic touch from the year before. She constantly talked about her "golden year" like it was a fleeting gift from the universe, and I'd just nod and tell her maybe she’s just not cut out for it after all
EDIT: I expected people to tell me not to worry about it. You helped her out at least one year and that was nice. It was high school hijinx not anything serious.
But it turns out people really hate what I did. Maybe I should confess to her after all these years and apologize? And give her some tomatoes?
