Image Jared Goff has been above league average in CMP%, TD%, INT%, ANY/A, passer rating, and sack rate every year since 2022. Over his entire Detroit tenure, he is at least 10% better than league average in each of those stats.

Tate Ratledge is filling the Frank Ragnow void for the Detroit Lions
It's great to see players in the trenches get some attention for all the work done. Check out T.R.'s blocking at about 7:20-impressive to my novice eye.

Brad Holmes is Building a Sustainable Contender
Brad Holmes Is Building a Sustainable Contender, Not Buying a One-Year Window
The criticism of Brad Holmes is getting ridiculous. For the first time since the Barry Sanders era, the Detroit Lions have become a legitimate postseason contender. In January 2024, Detroit won its first playoff game since the 1991 season, followed it with another victory, and reached the NFC Championship Game. Yet somehow, the general manager who helped build that roster is being criticized for not spending every available dollar.
Here's what people are overlooking: Salary-cap flexibility is an asset, not a liability.
Detroit currently ranks second in the NFL with approximately $35.25 million in available cap space, trailing only San Francisco at $41.47 million. Meanwhile, the Rams have approximately $1.85 million remaining, and Carolina just $1.80 million.
That flexibility matters, especially when injuries strike, or a legitimate difference-maker becomes available.
Let's stop pretending Holmes is unwilling to pay his players. Detroit has already committed substantial money to Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Penei Sewell, Aidan Hutchinson,n and Kerby Joseph. This year alone, Jahmyr Gibbs received a three-year, $67.5 million extension, while Jack Campbell landed a four-year, $81 million extension.
Now consider the next round of contracts, particularly Sam LaPorta and Brian Branch.
LaPorta absolutely deserves to get paid, but with Detroit's offensive firepower, there comes a point when the organization must decide where its money provides the greatest return. If retaining another expensive offensive weapon prevents Detroit from addressing its defensive weaknesses, letting LaPorta pursue a larger contract elsewhere may become a necessary business decision.
Personally, I'd rather see Detroit preserve enough flexibility to strengthen the secondary, protect itself against Kerby Joseph's uncertain injury situation, and potentially acquire another impact edge rusher opposite Hutchinson.
We've seen what reckless commitments can do. Philadelphia's infamous 2011 "Dream Team" finished 8-8, then collapsed to 4-12 the following season. Denver's Russell Wilson gamble ultimately produced $85 million in dead salary-cap charges. The Giants handed Daniel Jones $160 million, then released him less than two years later.
Spending big doesn't guarantee winning. Spending intelligently gives you a chance to keep winning.
Remember, this was once a franchise that Rob Gronkowski threatened to retire rather than join in a trade. Today, Detroit has become a legitimate destination for players who want to compete.
Holmes certainly isn't above criticism. But I'd much rather have a general manager protecting the team's championship window than one sacrificing its future for offseason headlines.
The goal isn't to win free agency. It's to win a Super Bowlâand remain competitive enough to chase another.
