Hi! I'm an amateur photographer who has been using a Canon T3i DSLR I was gifted years ago, and I'm looking to buy a mirrorless camera for my work in freelance environmental journalism, with regular bird photography, and also potential trips to Southeast Asia, where I hope to photograph wild gibbons and other primates.
My local camera shop has a used a6400 with the 16–50mm kit lens for $730, plus a Tamron 50–400mm for $899. The same camera kit is around $801 new on Amazon, so I'll try negotiating. I could get the whole setup for around $1,500–1,600.
Alternatively, an a6700 body would cost around $1,500, putting the total with the Tamron at roughly $2,400 before tax. It does look like they sell for $1,300 used. Also, a Canon R7 with a 100-400mm could sit at $2,500 before tax.
I'm very intrigued by how much I'd be saving with the a6700, with the kit lens included, but I'm concerned about the a6400's lack of bird-eye AF, especially for shorebirds and wildlife in the jungle, and whether it's worth buying a camera released in 2019. However, I'm also planning a Thailand trip and potentially moving to another city for work, so I'm trying to be careful not to overspend if there's a better option.
Do you think the extra $600-1000 is worth it for either the a6700 or R7 if I plan on using this camera professionally? Or is the a6700's autofocus worth the extra money for my needs? I'd especially appreciate advice from anyone who's used any of these for wildlife photography!
(1) Budget, country, and currency: $1,000-2,500 USA
(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?: Canon T3i, outdated, not worth upgrading kit lenses
(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Birds, primates, general strees scenes and landscapes
(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Photography
