Sub Announcement 2026 Posting & Flair Guidelines - read first, post after!

Important — r/canon is not a photo-sharing sub, it's primarily a gear discussion sub, and as such is not the place for sharing pics and videos captured with your Canon gear.

Exceptions exist for New Gear, Lens of the Week, and Showcase posts, but please see their respective sections below to understand when they can be posted and the requirements for doing so.

Likewise, we're not interested in posts sharing photos of Canon equipment (or worse, the boxes they came in)—your 50/1.2 looks the same as everybody else's—so outside of New Gear posts or those trying to problem solve a specific issue, topics showing gear aren't to be posted.

TLDR;

- No photo-sharing posts
- No photos-of-gear posts
- Use flair appropriately as detailed below

———

Post Flair

Gear Advice
For any post seeking recommendations from others about what camera, lens, or accessory, to buy or rent. Please follow the existing requirements when asking for recommendations. This is not for asking advice on how to use your equipment or solve a problem—for that, you can use...

Tech Help
Technical questions, clarification on how a feature works, error messages...fall under Tech Help.

New Gear
For showing off a new or new-to-you piece of equipment. As always, include a photo of the gear and a photo or three taken with the gear. Also include an explanation of why you got it and how you like using it.

Lens of the Week
We're consolidating down to a single flair any lens of the week post, rather than individual tags for different lenses or focal lengths. As always, look for the current lens of the week topic to know which optic or focal length is current.

Canon News
For product announcements or other Canon-specific or related news. Either provide a link directly to announcements and press releases, or to a recognised source reporting on it. Examples are sites like Petapixel, dpreview, and similarly known sites.

Active Deal
For posts alerting the community to sales from recognised outlets such as the Canon Refurb Store, B&H Photo, Lens Rentals etc. Titles need to begin with the applicable country, the supplier, and then a description of the discount or deal on offer, e.g.

[USA] Canon Refurb Store — R5 reduced to $2199 + free BG-R10 Battery Grip

Any other important details (start/expiry dates) can go into the body of the post. If including a link directly to the deal or supplier site, the URL must be stripped of affiliate and tracking data, or the post will be removed.

If a deal is highlighted from a supplier deemed by the mod team as suspicious, untrustworthy or unsavoury for some other reason, it will be removed.

When a deal is out of stock or expired, the flair needs to be updated to...

Expired Deal
Don't delete the post, just update to the Expired flair, then we can view older deals easily.

Showcase
This will only be made available to select when a post inviting the sub to make Showcase contributions is active.

Really enjoying the sharpness and vibrant colors that this lens can offer. Very pleasantly surprised by the image stabilization (most of these were captured hand-held). Definitely not the smallest package, but really fun to take out for an hour or so at a time.

Good evening guys, I just got myself a new gear with a R50 + Sigma 17-40 f1.8 for about a month. Happen to see this beauty at my work parking place, put on my Brandon Li ND and CPL filter and start taking some first real photos that I feel proud of myself. Too bad I didn’t bring my little printer to leave these photos with the owner. Looking for advice to improve my photoshoot.
P/s: repost cause I didn’t know the rule for New Gear, include the gear in post
Q: I notice some shots were lost some sky details/some area in photos too dark. Do I shoot with HDR will fix the issue?

Gear Buying Advice RP upgrade to...? I need a dad-cam.

I got the RP for a few years now, bought it it with the kit, so I got the RF 24-105 4-7.1, RF 70-200 f4, RF 50mm 1.8 and the RF 35mm 1.8. I like it for vacation, it takes nice images (for me) but when it comes to movements, it lacks performance. The AF is not the fastest and doesnt always hit where it should, ISO is okayish and so on. In a few months I will become a dad and I want to capture these moments as good as possible. Yeah, babies dont move that fast, but in a year a two, this will drastically change, lol, so I want to keep up. I really dont know what to upgrade, so I dont know how much I should invest.

I love the 35 and the 70-200, if that helps.

I woke up at 3 AM to grab the RF 24-105 f4 L for my daughter as her walk around lens for her R8. With my ID Me discount it came out to $870 shipped. The RF 24-70 f2.8 was still too pricey for me at $1940.

Gear Buying Advice General use lens upgrade

• Upvotes

I currently use a Canon 18-135 f.3.5-5.6 as my most used lens due to the broad zoom range. Recently upgraded from a t4i to an 80d and would like to start looking at upgrading my lenses as well. Ive been browsing sites like adorama and 2 lenses seem to be very appealing options in the $400 or less category (which is where I would like to be)

The canon 24-105 f.4 L IS, and the 28-70 f.2.8 L USM. I'm open to other suggestions as well, but which of these would be the better choice? The only other lens i have right now is a 70-300 f.4-5.6, so is it worth sacrificing a little telephoto capability on my general use lens to be able to go all the way to 2.8, or is 4 fine so I can keep a fairly broad range of capability?

Ive also looked at some of the Tamron super zoom options like an 18-280 but that wide of a range seems too good to be true & like there's gonna be a catch somewhere.

Thanks for the help

Tech Help I think I committed a camera sin. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Canon EOS Rebel t6

Post image
• Upvotes

I am very much a beginner. I got a new lens, changed it out, noticed a couple of dots appearing on pictures. Took lens off and used a microfiber cloth on the sensor/mirror. I now know that that was a mistake. Is this a mistake that using proper cleaning methods would fix, or is this a mistake that requires me sending the camera in to a professional for some kind of something above my knowledge level?

Canon RP + RF 100-400mm: Could you share some sample photos?

Canon RP + RF 100-400mm: Could you share some sample photos?

Hi everyone!

I'm considering buying a Canon EOS RP paired with the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM, and I'd really appreciate it if anyone using this combination could share some of their photos here.

I'm particularly interested in wildlife, birds, landscapes, and distant subjects. I'd love to see real-world results at different focal lengths and ISO settings, especially in less-than-ideal lighting conditions.

I'm trying to figure out whether the image quality and high-ISO performance of the RP would be good enough for my needs, or whether I'd be better off going for a more recent APS-C camera with a newer sensor.

If possible, unedited RAW conversions or photos with minimal processing would be especially helpful, but any real-world samples would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share their photos and experience! 🙂

Gear Buying Advice EF100-400 ii vs RF100-500

I'm an amateur photographer. I shoot Aviation, nature, sports and some motorsports. I currently shoot on the Canon R50 and RF100-400, and I wanna upgrade my lens before upgrading to an R5 as I know lens matters more than body. My current issue with my lens is that its soft, bad autofocus and shite in low light. So, I was recommended the EF 100-400 ii L as it is a very good lens, very sharp, better aperture and better autofocus. I can also get it for £1,400 excellent condition off of MPB. However, I just went into a Wex, and was recommended the 100-500, the guy said it was a lot sharper and faster autofocus. However, the F stop is slower and I know that EF lenses are built a lot better. Should I save up more for the RF lens or get the EF?

Looking for a suitable D3S replacement

I’ve been out of the photography game since 2021, my last camera was a Nikon D3S. It was wonderful, I could shoot at airports at night, in the rain. Of course above 6400 ISO, there would be noticeable grain, but the shots were usable. I also did Motorsports photography, which was fun. I sold my camera, and took a hiatus from photography. Now I’d like to go back into it, and I’ve really been contemplating between an EOS R6, a 1DX Mark II, and a D4S. A lot of my research has led me to an EOS R6 over the R6 Mark II. I’m also particularly drawn to Canon because of the lenses I want (200mm f/1.8 and the 100-400mm), but I need to know if my next camera will exceed the capabilities of my old D3S. I loved the durability and ruggedness, in addition to the battery life. I could go a month without charging my D3S. I know this isn’t the case with mirrorless, but if the mirrorless capabilities will surpass my D3S, I don’t mind making that switch. My main concern is with grain/noise at high ISOs, ability to survive a downpour, and burst FPS.

Gear Buying Advice Upgrading from a Canon R 10

My Canon R 10 recently randomly broke. And I’ve made the decision that it’s time to upgrade. My current deciding factor is the R6 Mark one and Canon R7. I have been borrowing a Canon R7 for the last week in replacement on my R 10. And I have really enjoyed using it, especially with that electronic shutter. So it’s making me wanna consider getting an R8 instead. But I wanna start getting more into events and I’ve heard that you have to have two card slots.
Is the dual card site really needed? For Contacts I mostly shoot sports photography, portraits, and events.

Tech Help Canon Ivy 2 Mini Print App Issues

• Upvotes

Hello,

I’ve got a Canon Ivy 2 and seem to be unable to connect to the internet with the Mini Print app that supports it. I am able to print with it just fine, but if I go to check firmware or try and browse their storefront of stickers/labels, I’m met with an ‘unable to connect to network’ issue, regardless of if I’m on WiFi or Cellular Data.

Has anyone had this issue as well? Rather difficult to find someone else having this issue.

Camera Body Suggestions

Thumbnail

Hi there! I've been getting into photography over the last year or so, but only by using my phone camera so far. Getting a proper camera is the next step of course, and I'm about to come into possession of this wide angle lens - but without the main camera body to go with it.

I understand this will be a kinda vague question and I could just Google it, but I'd like to get some info from people a bit more in the know. I'd like some suggestions on what body to buy for it. I am somewhat limited by budget, looking up to perhaps £300 (will likely go pre-owned). At CEX here in the UK, the EOS 750D model for example is £235, the EOS 6D is £295. I may look to do some video recording, but I will primarily be taking still photos.

So what are people's suggestions or advice? Thank you in advance! 📸

Gear Buying Advice Canon R50 vs R8 camera

Long story short, I’m trying to get into photography. I’m the type of person to do something a bit and then kind of fall out of it. I’ve done a lot of research and decided the r50 would be the perfect beginner camera for me. I think if I waited I could find one with the kit lens for $500-600, which is pretty much the top of my budget. I’d be mostly shooting nature so I’d probably want to get a 50mm 1.8f lens as well as a sort of do it all set it which would probably put me in the $700 range.

My buddy is offering to sell me his R8 with the 24-50mm kit lens and a 50mm 1.8 as well as some other accessories for $1000. This is obviously a great deal.

Is it worth it for me to shell out the extra couple hundred for this and get the better equipment at a great deal when I’m just starting?

Tech Help Has anyone used a 1.4 tc with a crop body with a crop body?

So I'm about to pick up a 500 f4 (Gen one) and I have a canon R7 and R6ii. I've seen people using 1.4tc on them all the time but usually with full frames so I'm wondering if anyone has used a tc with a crop body. If so did it keep sharpness like it would on a full frame?

other canon equipment Does anyone actually use the 800mm f/5.6 and 1200mm f/8

Just curious. I've only seen videos where they got a loaner and promptly returned it. One guy actually using the 800mm who seemed to be a researcher studying nests and such. But the 1200 seems like a pure statement piece

Gear Buying Advice 85mm,105mm Or 24–105mm for Canon 6D

Hello,
I’m currently using a 50mm f/1.2 on my Canon 6D, but I feel a little limited by it. I’m thinking about buying a new lens, either an 85mm or a 105mm. However, sometimes I feel that the 24–105mm would be a better choice because of its versatility.
Your feedback please

Canon refurb Lenses - Highly recommended

Just in case anyone is pondering buying a used lens directly from Canon. I got my first refurb lens from them today, the epic RF 50mm f/1.2 and I'm really impressed. The lens looks brand new. It came properly packaged with the proper lens hood, lens bag and the cap. It was on sale from Canon. Yes, you would get it cheaper from MBP or Wex, but the Canon refurb lenses seem to be fully tested and certified and comes with the same 2yr warranty as new lenses. I'll be doing it again in the future!

Tech Help R5 got a little wetter than I'd prefer today

My R5 has been the first camera body I've owned (I've had around a half-dozen DSLRs) where I felt like I'd be content for the foreseeable future. Today, I was on a cruise tour in Busan, where it steadily rained all day. I thought it was sufficiently weather sealed to withstand some rain. I thought keeping it mostly covered under my waterproof jacket was enough. But after returning to the ship, I had it laying on the bed and when I picked it up, there was a considerable wet spot. I've pulled the batteries, detached the battery grip, removed the lens, and wiped away all detectable moisture. It still functions - shutter has no issues, reviewing images is just fine. I'm just worried I've taken it beyond it's weather-resistant limitations. Thots and players appreciated.
