Post Processing Megathread

Post-Processing Megathread

So the last post I made (“How do I get this look?”) got buried pretty deep, so I thought I’d make this thread rounding up some videos/resources/techniques I’ve found.

I mentioned in the last thread that “post processing is more about theory than the tools/plugins/tricks/secrets/etc.” I may have misspoke a bit. I’m not saying neglect learning the tools, or stop searching for secrets, or stop using plugins; but rather use them in a more educational way. Knowing how all the tools work will help you apply them better and know when to apply them. Using plugins can be a great tool, but should never be a crutch. My feeling is anything a plugin can do, I want to know how to do for my own knowledge.

What if you’re an avid VSCO, Replichrome, Alien Skins, etc user and one day you’re working on a job with a fast turnaround time and your plugin fails, or it wasn’t on that computer, or it’s no longer compatible with Photoshop/Lightroom? What happens if your look was defined by a plugin, that you can’t recreate? Meanwhile you have a client waiting on their images. This is why having a vast knowledge of the tools/techniques is extremely valuable.

If you like a plugin, try reverse-engineering it. I’m not saying you have to use the reverse-engineered technique and stop using the plugin, but it sure helps when you know how the plugin is working. Heck you could even improve upon it ;)

Chasing “secrets” is also a great way to learn. It’s not necessarily that a “secret” exists but what you may learn along the way to “finding one”.

Anyways, what I’m saying is there’s no shame or problem with using plugin/preset/filters as tools in your kit; however like any tool you should have an understanding of how it works so you know when to use it, how to use it properly, or what to do if something goes wrong and you can’t use it. The better you get at editing, the more you may realize you need to improve as a photographer. You’ll come to a point where the quality of photo/editing has reached a cap due to the quality of the base image.

If anyone has any techniques/articles/tutorials that should be included, please comment or send me a message and I’ll add it in.

I’m not up to date on my tutorials. From what I’ve found Ben Secret and Michael Woloszynowicz have some of the most powerful techniques in their videos.

Color or B&W?

I cannot decide whether to keep this shot in color or black & white. The former has kind of a warm/dark vibe whereas the b&w has more of a noir vibe.

Nik collection worthwhile?

I have not had a chance to fully explore the Nik collection but am wondering if it is worth the price? I shoot Raw with an OM-1 and use DxO.

I'm used to using Photoshop but cancelled CC this year as I no longer use it for work. I'm trying to redefine my workflow and am happy, so far, with DxO. Just wondering if the price of Nik is worth it and if it adds anything significant?

Thanks!!

AI background replacement in PS Beta.

I mean, it's okay ... but something feels off, like maybe too much separation between the subject and background, and maybe the edges need to be softened up a bit?

Thoughts, suggestions?

How are these painterly, grainy textures achieved in analog photography and darkroom printing?

I’ve been really fascinated by this kind of image-making, where photographs have an almost painterly, etched or lithographic quality. I love the coarse textures, irregular grain, soft and hazy areas, and the way parts of the image seem to dissolve, bleed or merge into the background.
I’m trying to understand how these results are actually achieved, particularly through analog processes rather than simply adding a digital effect.
Are these effects created mainly through the choice of film, exposure, focus and movement during shooting, or can they be achieved through darkroom printing and manipulating the photographic paper afterward?
For example, could techniques such as lith printing, unconventional developers, physical manipulation of prints, or combining photographic emulsions with drawing or painting produce something similar? Would printing a photograph onto textured paper make any meaningful difference, or is the texture more likely to come from the photographic process itself?
I’m interested in experimenting with a hybrid analog process and would love to hear from anyone who has worked with these kinds of textures. If you recognize a particular technique or know where to start experimenting, I’d really appreciate your suggestions regarding film, paper, chemistry, printing methods or post-processing.
I’ve attached a few visual references to illustrate the kind of result I’m interested in. I’m not necessarily trying to reproduce one image exactly, but to understand the processes that can create this painterly, imperfect and almost tactile quality.

How do I replicate these colors?

Using a modern digital camera, what steps would you take to achieve this color grade in Lightroom? I don't even really know how to describe the colors in this image, making it difficult for me to search for answers.
