Other 150 hours into simdrifting, I just realised I'm using assists

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share this because I still cannot even believe it myself. Will be long but I think it's worth the read.

I've played AC for a while (370hs, probably around 150-200 drifting), a couple years ago with a G27, and after I sold it I used a controller. Last November I bought a DD (R5) and it was amazing, so on May I bought a full rig with everything I could afford. R12 v2, deep dish wheel and KS pro (I also do LMU), cheap handbrake, Simsonn loadcell pedals, shifter, and a bucket seat, but since I've bought it I've been fighting with drift settings on AC. It has always felt weird to me, specially comparing it to videos, so I just got frustrated and dropped it for a couple of months.

This week, I got bitten by that bug again and jumped into the rig with my round wheel after making some adjustments on the profiles, just to bump into some settings that felt really decent. For the first time I was not fighting the wheel as much, but even then every drift session felt like fighting the car, less or more depending on the config. So, I felt like finally buying a proper handbrake and I upgraded to a Moza HBP.

After a lot of laps being really solid with my new hb, I jumped for the first time into an online server with AI drift to start practicing some tandems, just to find out I couldn't even drift pass the first corner. Heck, I couldn't even get out of the pits on Drifters Paradise (WDTS) without spinning off. At first I thought it was due to the car swap (was using BDB on SP), so I went back to singleplayer to drive WDTS all the night, and today's morning. An hour ago I tried MP again, but it just kept happening. Weather was the same, grip levels were the same, car was exactly the same, and after minutes of "debugging", I realised this whole time my game was set to "Intermediate", with a lot of assists enforced.

I literally stared at the screen astonished for a full minute before setting it to Pro and hopping into SP once again, and there it was. It felt exactly like that server. I felt like an idiot at first, but started throwing some laps and something clicked on me. All of this time were I'd watch people throwing sick drifts effortlessly while I was fighting my car back and forth, it was not fully a skill issue. It was just ABS/stability control fighting me back every corner, so now, it feels SUPER weird, tho at least I do feel like I'm able to reach my peak like this, and pushes me to keep practicing. Now, I find myself spinning out and being to harsh with inputs due to being used to fight assists, so gotta kill some bad habits.

Feel free to laugh at the comments. Thanks for the read.

TLDR: Drove for 150 hours with my game set to "Intermediate" difficulty without realising until I hopped on a multiplayer lobby for the first time and not being able to even turn without assists.

Please don’t bully me because this is a Gran Turismo game.

Few days ago I tried to bring my old PSP Go back to life and was successful. The battery was in a sleep state and jumping it directly on a charger was enough to trigger it.

Today I tried Gran Turismo and it’s been 14 years since I last played it. I was able to shed a lot of time with no assists but these controls are a huge handicap. Still impressive how something this size can handle this!

Clip Cyberpunk 2077 mod that replaces car physics with one from AC

1.5k Upvotes

I've spent couple evenings building a mod that would replace Cyberpunk's (rather shitty) car physics with one from Assetto Corsa. Both games run in parallel, AC in the background runs on minimal graphics settings and only provides car's direction, speed, pitch, roll and other parameters which are then injected into Cyberpunk. Within Cyberpunk I see Johnny's Porsche 911 930 but I feel RUF CTR Yellowbird (which is also based on 930) running underneath. Gauges are working, steering wheel is synced with real wheel (although only about 80 degrees in both directions, CDPR didn't bother animating beyond that), wheels are spinning, front wheels are turning, brake and even reverse lights work. FPS impact is rather minor, barely noticeable.

This is very raw prototype, collisions don't work, neither with traffic nor with walls/buildings. Basically when I hit wall at 120 km/h I simply go through it and either find myself on nearest street or fall under the map. I also can't feel elevation changes, suspension compressions and things like that because in AC I'm just driving around giant flat surface. Both collisions and elevation changes could be addressed by scanning some piece of Night City and converting it into AC track, but this would require some effort, never did anything like that before.

What do you guys think of my idea? Would you want to try it out?

UPD: I see how much attention my post attracted and how many people here want to use their wheel in c77. Here’s a separate mod I just found today that adds wheel support, worked on my alpha mini & tlcm, is already published and does not require AC running in the background https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/29246 Give it a try. I will continue working on my mod and will do a new post once there will be something worth sharing. Thanks everyone!

Discussion Holy cow, RaceRoom's new update is a massive deal

RaceRoom went from being an outdated sim with a questionable future, to a much more modern sim with an incredibly bright future in one update. Perhaps that's an overreaction, but the changes made are impressive.

The new UI is arguably the best in sim racing now. The FFB feels better. That's on top of the new HUD and graphics that have been added over the past year. The game's solid core experience with a long list of content now has a surrounding system that lets it shine.

No, day-night cycle and wet weather are still not there. No, there's still no track evolution. And many things can still be a bit rough around the edges. But this update brought a new backend system that allows all those things to be developed, and at a much faster rate it seems as well. The core reason for why RaceRoom was as far behind as it was no longer exists.

Right now, RaceRoom is still probably not worth playing consistently over most other sims. But this update sets the stage for that to be a possibility. Which for a long time, felt like an impossibility

Question Raceroom: marketing level? non-existent... cost of the update package? absurd—it costs more than iRacing, yet the only people online are in the free-to-enter races, with a total of just 20 players online for the daily events... why on earth would I choose Raceroom over iRacing and pay more for it?

Rigs Qubic BT1 Seatbelt Tensioner Sucks!!

BECAUSE.... 😜

I am too busy laughing and smiling from ear to ear, rather than concentrating on my driving 😁

It is amazing and worth every cent. The amount of immersion it brings is fantastic. Coupled with buttkickers, I would say this is the Poor Man's motion rig, it really does make the rig come alive.

If you are on the fence about getting one, just go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Discussion I built a locked shaft test bench

Post image
97 Upvotes

Hi, I review sim racing wheelbases, and I wanted to know if it would be possible to see what a wheelbase does. Or to see what my hands have felt. The whole reason I built it because I found Conspit Ares (12Nm) to feel very close to it's 20Nm sibling under same settings. And I wanted to find out if my subjective findings hold any truth, or it was just a placebo.

So I built a bench that can do it. The base’s shaft is locked to a torque transducer, so it wants to turn but can’t, and the bench records exactly what comes out.

What it measures -

1 - Holding torque - Constant force holds in both directions.
2 - Frequency response - How much of fine details come through, and the base's bandwidth.
3 - Phase lag - Details are good, but it also matters when they arrive.
4 - Step response (slew rate) - How quickly the base reacts, from 0 to a set torque and back to 0.

The data is not meant for ranking, just for seeing what a base can do.
Feel still remains the deciding factor.

Result - The Ares was indeed very close to the Platinum. Same reaction time too (4.3 vs 4.4ms), and on my RBR settings, 32 vs 36 Hz of bandwidth (which only the bench was able to pick up. With wheel attached and during gameplay, imperceptible)
I also made a video about it - https://youtu.be/f3EWdWJu6J0?si=9BPa4U41qvdT1TW_

Also, all the plots and such, and bench details in case you want to nerd out at things, there's a website too.

Question Bracket and seat not aligned? What is going on?

Post image
• Upvotes

Recently got a seat and bracket for my new rig. The seat and brackets came together but the seat mounting threads aren’t straight or plum? Would I use a shim or spacer but then wouldn’t the bolt not be straight for the bracket?
Is something else wrong like I got sent the wrong thing, or a defect?
Any help appreciated!

Rigs Cheapo VR vs 34 ultra wide screen (+ eye tracking)

There are some used VRs available (HP Reverb etc) that have the same prices as a 34 ultra wide screen. What are your thoughts about these options? which one would you recommend and why? I'm thinking of playing at 90hz/100hz (6900xt).

Also, the Meta Quest 3 everybody loves to say is the best budget option, you have to have some stupid facebook account that tracks everything you do (and see) right? or that was only in the older models?

Question How should I go about upgrading setup?

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I currently have a thrustmaster t248 bundle and a foldable cockpit which I’ll attach a picture of. It’s a nice beginner setup and I want to eventually upgrade but the problem is the wheel has seemed to crap out early on me. It will no longer calibrate the wheel and the throttle was constantly at 100%. I had a problem like this before where a wire inside the wheelbase was grounding the circuit out, so I cut the wire and was fine for a couple months. Now it’s happened again but the wire has already been cut so idk what else could be wrong. I wanted to eventually upgrade to a moza r12 and crp2 pedals but if I were to have to do that now, would my cockpit even be able to support the better equipment?

Rigs Best portable rig and seat - under $400 USD

Hi All,

I have a Logitech G29 (no shifter yet), I was wondering what would be the best starter rig/seat combination would be. It needs to be portable - I need to pack it away once a week for cleaning.

So far I am looking at the NLR GTLite Pro and Playseat Challenge X

I am not very interested in F1, but that could change?

It is unlikely that I will upgrade my wheel for a long time

Discussion I’m looking for a low-cost tablet or smartphone to install SimHub on

What model could I get? I don’t want to spend a fortune, since it would only be used for that in my setup. I’m tired of seeing the hub displayed on my ultrawide, it doesn’t feel very realistic, and it’s especially less immersive
