GUILT, SHAME AND BLAME experienced by SOs in a support role - mod approved research post

Hey everyone, as part of my doctoral thesis* I've developed a questionnaire to shed some light on how guilt, shame and blame impacts the loved ones of someone with mental health needs. If you, or someone close to you, provides informal mental health support and notice these emotions showing up in the relationship, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

People who have completed the survey have reported finding the differences between guilt and shame insightful and highlighted how it helped them understand more about their emotional experience in the relationship. A community-wide benefit is that the outcomes of the research will be used to improve resources for SOs so that they can be supported more in their role, essentially helping the helpers.

The whole survey takes around 15-20 minutes and after understanding more about your current emotional state, it goes through a range of scenarios to see how you would likely respond if it were to happen today. All answers are scales so there is minimal typing and it is mobile friendly.

You can read more or access the study here: https://lancasteruni.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9AWrvoYWvPCqTu6

The person supported doesn't need a formal diagnosis but they need to have accessed mental health support (medication, therapy, etc) for 6 months or more. The survey is available internationally and recognises all types of informal support, be it financial, practical or emotional.

Thanks everyone. I really value the input from the OCD+ community as we know it tends to impact loved ones in a unique way and for me as a researcher it is really important that these voices are heard.

*The project has ethical approval from the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Lancaster University.

Relationship wants

I think about this heavily, but is it weird to crave obsession? like if i were with someone i want them obsessed with me like, OBSESSED. i want them to always text me, always want to be around me, get jealous, give me all their attention and affection and only want me. i want someone to kiss the ground i walk on (obviously not literally), but i keep thinking about this a lot and am i weird? do people like that even exist?

I feel like I escaped a loop hole

Ive been in college for two months and I feel like I have changed and matured so much throughout those months. But because of this, I have been thinking a lot about the social aspect of college and just seeing everybody else around me. Before college, I felt like I missed out a lot in high school. I felt like you had to be popular to truly enjoy high school and that’s all I cared about. I thought being popular was the way you truly enjoyed life. I thought that was the way everybody was going to like you, the way girls would like you, and the way you get invited to parties. I guess I was popular in high school in a way but I never really got invited to parties in high school or really had that many friends in high school. I always felt left out and pretty much sat alone in the library during lunch. I didn’t want to feel like this in college and I felt like that college would be a fresh start for me. Nobody from my grade was going to the same college as me so I was the only one going. I had dreams of partying all the time, being in a frat, getting laid, having tons of friends, etc (i obviously knew that I was also going to school for an education). But once I got there, a lot of stuff just didn’t happen. I hated my orientation as a lot of people just felt fake and didn’t care about me at all. I started to have second thoughts on the school and was wondering if this was the place for me but I knew that it would be. Sadly, nothing really has changed for the better at the time. My roommate wasn’t in the dorm all that often so I never really had the chance to do anything with him to try and meet other people. My floor was super quiet and it was hard trying to make friends on my floor until one day, I picked up a few packages and a few drunk girls invited me up to the top floor. I absolutely loved it at first, I enjoyed going up there but I didn’t realize that I was being played. I would always get high when I hang out with them but then I realized that I was getting played. I thought people were laughing with me but they were laughing at me and as the days went by, the less and less people started to care about me and the more I’ve been alone. So the last option was rushing a frat cause I thought that was the best way to make friends. Rush was super hard and it felt like a lot of the brothers didn’t care about me either. I was really normal but they didn’t care at all so I got no bids. So yeah, I basically hung out with absolutely nobody. I then later moved out of my double to a single somewhere else and I love it. However, because I’ve been alone for so long, I started to see how most people act here. I started to see that most people only want to get drunk, get high, get laid, hookup and nothing more and it’s really sad honestly. It’s super hard to find a genuine person here because they are overshadowed by people like that. A lot of guys act nonchalant and all act the exact same and I don’t understand why all the girls love that and then later repost how they hate men. I don’t know, I feel like my life just woke up and now I’m seeing other people live a life through temporary happiness. I hate it. I don’t even want to touch a beer anymore. I might just transfer to some place better because I learned that this just isn’t the way. I’m sorry I typed a lot but fuck I’ve been thinking a lot for the past month and I just wanted to express how I was feeling

When you open the chat and see her online but still don't have the courage to say anything-that's when you realize you fucked up in life and failed someone. You want to speak, but the words just won't come.

It's weird how our minds can be so complicated yet so fragile at the same time-overthinking every possibility, fearing rejection, and clinging to what-ifs. And in the end, you just sit there, staring at the screen, waiting for the urge to fade away.

Winter

It's a beautiful season. It reminds me of the feeling of wanting to let go but still loving to stay. I think it brings soft yet harsh truths, the ones you refuse to believe but that keep showing up in your face. Winter is that one person everyone loves yet no one understands. It holds the gratefulness of being loved yet craving to be understood.

his is a “Sapienza” University of Rome thesis project that investigates daydreaming and intrusive thoughts patterns by completing simple multiple choice questionnaires… by completing the questionnaires, you can receive your results by mail and understand more about yourself, or even just contribute to the research project in an anonymous way, based on your preferences.

The questionnaire takes approximately 20–25 minutes to complete.

⚠️ Requirements to participate:

•  Be at least 18 years old

•  Have a basic understanding of English (the questionnaire is entirely in English)

being grateful for my life for people who are disadvantaged

you see how some people see disabled people and say things like, i'm lucky i'm not disabled, so i should appreciate my life. some criticize that and say it's morally wrong to turn someone's pain into your own happiness. but in my view, it's not evil thought. it's just a byproduct of empathy. they feel the pain, and then become more grateful for their own lives. it starts with empaphy and the gratitude follows after.

so feeling that way is a signal for empathy, not comparison.

To love me more is to know me less

Maybe it’s easier to love me when you can idealize me. The more you get to know me, the harder it becomes to separate who I really am from who you imagined me to be.

It's my first time here and idk how it really works but I'm trying to write at least once a week and I wanted to post it somewhere. I just wanted to try writing anything and everything that come to my mind - but I'm nervous a little, I don't even know what to write but I have to 10 min to so that's fine. I'm a girl, I live in simple family, I love to do things, a lot of things but I usually give up quickly. I know one of my problems is the phone and doomscrolling but I can't just stop it. I will try to I guess, anyway. I feel off yet I feel good, like I feel bad but I feel ungrateful that I feel bad, I hope no one read this but deep down I want someone to read it or something. Idk.

i was in a hegans (grocery store) with my friend. and i was in one of the aisles, as i walked pasted someone with a messy bun (it didn’t really look that good) but i told the girl, “i love your hair“ because i genuinely liked how she did it, but she probably thought i was just mocking her, or taunting her..

Drugs and why I use them to avoid my horrible horrible intrusive thoughts that aren’t even intrusive anymore they’re just my constant thinking. I’m here so yall can ask anything and maybe relate to me and help me stop using or find an alternative way to shut off my thinking. AMA about my unique mind

My tolerance to many drugs is fried as shit, and I’m talking fried, like unable to trip on anything but breakthrough levels of dmt and salvia, due to lexapro and vraylar prescriptions and years of drug abuse. I just took 3 hydrocodone at whatever 10-325 means (what the bottle says), a Xanax that’s 15mg, three ecstasy pills (100 %) pure, and downed all that using a vodka and coke. I’m also coming down from a very high purity meth high, and took 60mg 2cb (didn’t make me high or trip, that’s how fucked my tolerance is for shit). I smoked some weed after downing everything and have a vape for the buzz. What do yall think is gonna happen to me if I drink more? And do yall think I’ll ever be able to properly trip on shrooms or acid? Five 450ug tabs failed to even make me have trippy thoughts, and same with 7gs of shrooms. Also I’ve done everything but datura and fentanyl so ask me anything!! But at the core of this post, if you’re anything like me, ask me what you can do to avoid this type of future or how to get out of it already. But I also need help. Do I allow my brain to think what it thinks (I’m talking Travis Barker but worse level thoughts), or do I continue to abuse the fuck out of every drug I can get my hands on just to feel anything close to human? If you’re curious about why I’m not human just feel free to ask in this AMA. Again the main focus is not even rly the drugs its my desperation to think differently and how I need help

Any tips on how to sleep better with intrusive thoughts?

I had an event happen to me over the summer and it caused me to develop unwanted thoughts. Not only does my brain convince on something I would never do but at night especially I get REALLY bad flashbacks to during that summer. It leaves me in distress and I just want some sleep. If I could NEVER sleep again I would but ofc we can’t. So, any tips would do me wonders

I've been recently having intrusive thoughts about needles poking at my eyes or piercing my eyelids. I need to blink and roll my eyes around everytime it happens to make sure nobody can accurately hit me in the eye with a needle or whatever. It's really annoying.

Am I going to snap and hurt somebody?

often times i find myself avoiding going out in public out of fear a snap and hurt somebody. when i'm around people, images of me violently attacking them will enter my head. more often than not women are the focus. when walking on the trails, if i see a woman walking with headphones in, i think "i could walk up behind her and kill her; she'd have no clue i'm right behind her." i hate the idea that i might be capable of that. avoiding people is the best i can do. i don't have someone to envision these violent thoughts on.
