Thoughts & Ideas Does anyone else feel like weekends have become recovery days instead of actual days off?

1.1k Upvotes

I remember when weekends used to feel like a little vacation.
Now Friday comes around and I’m exhausted. Saturday disappears between laundry, groceries, cleaning, and all the things I didn’t have time to do during the week.
Then Sunday arrives and half the day is spent mentally preparing for Monday.
It’s weird because technically I have free time, but somehow it never feels like enough to actually enjoy anything.
And when I finally get a few hours to myself, sometimes all I want to do is absolutely nothing.
I miss having a weekend where I could wake up without a plan and just enjoy the day.
Anyone else feel like their days off are mostly spent recovering from their working days?

Thoughts & Ideas Anyone else ever just sit in their car for a few extra minutes after getting home?

I pull into the driveway, turn the engine off, and then just… stay there. Not scrolling or anything. Just sitting. Sometimes with the radio still on low.

It’s the only quiet in-between space that still feels like it belongs to me. Once I walk through the door the day starts again in a different way.

Does anyone else do this or is it just a me thing?

Just Chatting Anyone remember rearranging your room as a teenager?

So I grew up in the 70s and 80s and I always shared a room with my brother (we were 20 months apart). And then, when I think it was about 12, I remember I got my own room finally. But I remember, as I was going through the years, that I often rearranged my room. I just get this sudden urge to move all the furniture around, take things off the walls, you know, put up new posters things like that. Just completely change the look of the room. Eventually, I ended up having Beatles posters and that kind of stuff all over my walls. I remember how good it felt afterward it was like having a brand new room. Something about changing everything around just kind of made it feel refreshed and give me a whole new outlook. I think I remember doing it before a new school year sometimes?? Anyways, it just got me wondering if anyone else did that too, and if kids nowadays do that. I don't have kids myself so I genuinely have no idea. I don't know what kids do nowadays. Is rearranging your room a thing?

Thoughts & Ideas Why does showering at night feel like resetting your whole life?

I can have the most unproductive day ever, then take a shower, put on clean clothes, clean up my room a little and suddenly I feel like I’ve got my life together again.

It makes no sense but it works every time.

Thoughts & Ideas Do you ever randomly remember something embarrassing from years ago and just cringe in the middle of the day?

It’ll be completely out of nowhere. You’re just walking or sitting there and boom, some random moment from high school or an old job pops up and you physically wince. Happens to me more than I’d like. Anyone else get hit with these at the worst times?

Thoughts & Ideas Does anyone else feel like evenings just disappear?

I get home from work, drop my stuff, and tell myself I’m finally going to do something I actually want to do. Then somehow it’s 10pm and I’ve just been scrolling or doing random chores that never seem to end.

It’s not even that I’m busy. It’s more like the free hours just quietly vanish and I never really use them for anything that feels good.

I used to look forward to the night as the best part of the day. Now it mostly just feels like the leftover time between work and sleep.

Anyone else notice this happening more and more?

Life Stories Ninety days sober and clean

I’ve been back home for nearly a month now, following seven weeks in a treatment center for my addiction. Today marks exactly 90 days of sobriety, and I’m feeling wonderful—a milestone I consider a major achievement. In October, we’re heading to the Ardennes for some hiking; that’s something I never would have done back when I was deep in my addiction, so I’m very proud of the progress I’ve made so far. Just last weekend, for instance, I hiked 10 km—another thing I wouldn’t have done even a few months ago. ☺️✌🏻

Just Chatting Stores should decorate again!

Why are no stores decorating anymore?? Not for Halloween, the winter holidays, anything. Since the height of the pandemic, stores, shops, and businesses had to close and re-evaluate their spending which I understand. But physical storefronts used to have decorations and happiness and fun. Where has it all gone??

Thoughts & Ideas Just found out wrinkled fingers in water aren't from skin absorbing moisture.

Turns out pruney fingers are an active nerve reflex. Your brain literally constricts blood vessels to create "tire treads" so you can grip things underwater without slipping.

The wildest part is that if someone has nerve damage in a finger, it won't wrinkle at all. Evolution is crazy.

Found the neurological breakdown on oddlyclear here if anyone is curious about the nerve study:

Just Chatting What tiny thing reliably makes a bad day about 10% better?

Not looking for big life fixes, just the small stuff. A specific song, a hot shower at a weird time, a walk around the block, the first sip of something cold. Love hearing what works for other people.

Thoughts & Ideas Do you ever feel like you’re just going through the motions most days?

Not fully depressed, just that quiet emptiness where you’re doing everything right on paper but it still feels hollow. Like you’re watching yourself live instead of actually living it. It hits me in random moments and I don’t always know what to do with it. Anyone else feel this way sometimes?

Thoughts & Ideas Does anyone else feel like having absolutely no plans has become a luxury?

I remember when having no plans for the weekend felt boring. Now, the thought of having two whole days where nobody needs anything from me sounds amazing.
No alarms, no obligations, no rushing somewhere. Just waking up whenever, making something good to eat, watching a movie, or doing absolutely nothing without feeling guilty about it.
It’s funny how something we used to consider boring can become the highlight of our week.
But I’ve also noticed that sometimes, when I finally get that free time, I end up feeling like I should be doing something productive.
Anyone else experience this? Do you actually enjoy doing nothing, or does your brain start making a to-do list the moment you sit down?

Questions Is it normal to prefer solitude?

I like being alone. I love the silence. I love the peace.

Why is it that my friends are always concerned about this? I think by this week I've had to convince three people that I'm okay and nothing is wrong.

I love being in my house with the lights at minimum luminosity. Regardless, I'll try to be neighborly with my neighbors and do sometimes hang out but I always feel best if no one comes into my house. Is it normal to prefer this level of solitude?

Ps: I'm not lonely. Not depressed. Nada.

Just Chatting There's something oddly relaxing about folding laundry

I spent the afternoon sorting and folding clothes and somehow it left me feeling pretty content. The towels stack up in neat squares, the shirts come out flat, and for a little while the whole pile looks ordered instead of scattered. I don't know why it helps, but once I get going I end up thinking less and just focusing on the fabric and the edges. By the end the dresser drawers close without a fight, and the basket is empty. It's nothing exciting, but every so often I catch myself looking forward to the quiet rhythm of it.

Just Chatting What tiny thing makes an unfamiliar place feel welcoming?

• Upvotes

Sometimes it's a place having somewhere comfortable to sit, or someone taking a moment to explain how things work without making you feel awkward. It's interesting how little details can change the feeling of being somewhere new.

Whatis a small thing that makes you feel welcome?

Music Whats your burger order?

Double meat, double cheese, all the way, mayo instead of mustard, grilled jalapenos, and grill AND raw onions.

Side question. Why are you judged when ordering two fast food burgers when during a cook out you are often encouraged to get a second burger?

Just Chatting Gotta brag about my husband really quick

My husband has spent the past couple years learning Chess because he really likes strategy games and he's been struggling with the chess.com app for months because he has his good days and bad days. I used to play chess a lot but board games turn me into a competitive person who goes a little insane over stuff that really isn't a big deal, so I've been keeping him company while he plays.

Today he brought his chess score up from 1060 to 1170 in the span of TWO HOURS and honestly I'm amazed. It's obvious he's been practicing a lot and he showed me that in 20 games he was 17 wins 3 losses!!! I'm so proud of him and he's really so smart and I'm glad he's finally seeing the results of his practice.

Do y'all have anything you've been practicing lately? New skills you've been trying to learn? I am just starting to learn crochet but it's gonna take forever because I have bad hand eye coordination and rheumatoid arthritis.

Just Chatting Hi, what do you think about family gatherings?

Family drama is such a mess, and lately I’ve been feeling really drained by it all.
On one hand, there's that constant obligation to show up, catch up with everyone, and pretend everything is smooth. But on the other hand, within five minutes of sitting down, someone is usually bringing up old grudges, unsolicited life advice, or passive-aggressive comments about things that happened years ago. It honestly leaves me feeling pretty exhausted and disconnected.

Questions Why does time feels like it goes faster and faster the older you get?

When I was younger it seemed like I had a lot more time between my hands. Someone told me it could be because the time lived is growing so fx an hour is becoming a smaller and smaller percentage of ones life. What do you think?

What a day....

• Upvotes

Our power went off early this morning and didn't come on until a little after midnight. It was hot and stuffy in the house.

Then I fell, again. Sometimes I just collapse. It's fun—not! Banged up and sore so I'll count myself lucky. It could have been much worse. I would rather hit my head on our wood floors than outside on concrete. Extra pain pill tonight, maybe two. "Thank you Dear."

The power is on, I'm thankful for the air conditioning. Our Internet is not. I get to deal with that mañana. My phone is almost fully charged after getting awfully close to zero. Now I can watch movies on YouTube. I am a film noir fan and YouTube has loads of great movies. Maybe something with Lizbeth Scott <insert wolf whistle here!>. "No Dear, that wasn't me whistling. It must have been the neighbor." Maybe I better read instead, in silence.

It's 2:41 in the morning. I'll probably be up for hours. I'm running on two hours of sleep from the night before. I'm really ready for this day to be over.

Am I talking to myself? Could be. I AM feeling out of sorts. Maybe I did hit my head too hard.

Thoughts & Ideas Anyone else feel like errands take way more mental energy than they should?

I can spend 30 minutes actually doing errands, but somehow it feels like they took up half my day.

Getting ready, driving there, waiting around, coming back, then I feel like I need a break after 😭

Meanwhile if I stay home, I can do way more and barely notice the time.

Thoughts & Ideas Does anyone else feel like every year after 2020 has gone by ridiculously fast?

I still remember how long a school year used to feel as a kid. Summer vacation felt endless, waiting for a birthday felt like forever, and even a random Friday seemed like something to look forward to.

Now I blink and somehow another year is almost over.

The weirdest part is that nothing necessarily feels wrong. You're studying, working, meeting people, doing normal things. But when you try to remember what actually happened over the last few months, everything feels like one long blur.

Maybe it's just adulthood, or maybe having so much of our lives happen through the same screens makes the days blend together.

Does anyone else genuinely feel this, or is it just me?
