From Bhopal to Delhi for college, and now I'm trying to figure out how to afford the life I came here for.
I'm not entirely sure how to write this, but I think I need some perspective from people who have been through something similar.
I'm a first-year student at Gargi College, University of Delhi. I moved from Bhopal to Delhi for college, carrying all the expectations that come with moving to a new city. I imagined independence, new experiences, meeting people, learning things outside the classroom, and slowly building a life of my own.
And I've experienced some of that. Delhi has challenged me, changed me, and forced me to grow up in ways I wasn't prepared for. But somewhere between adjusting to college, living away from home, dealing with uncertainty, and trying to figure out who I want to become, reality has started hitting harder than I expected.
The biggest issue right now is financial independence.
My family's financial situation is limited, and the expenses of living in Delhi, especially rent and basic living costs, are becoming difficult to manage. My parents can contribute a small amount each month, but I don't want the entire burden of my education and living expenses to fall on them. I want to find a way to contribute meaningfully myself.
I'm not looking to abandon college or take a shortcut at the cost of my education. I want to continue studying, maintain a good academic record, build useful skills, and eventually work towards a career in public policy, international relations, or research.
The problem is that all of this requires time, money, and some degree of stability, and right now I'm trying to figure out how to build that stability while already being in the middle of everything.
My life has been pretty unpredictable lately. I've had to adjust to a new city, deal with personal struggles, rethink some of my expectations, and learn how to manage things on my own. Some days I feel like I'm finally getting somewhere; on others, I feel like I'm trying to solve ten different problems without knowing which one to tackle first.
Still, I don't want this post to be just about my circumstances. I want to do something about them.
I'm willing to learn and work. I'm interested in writing, content creation, social media management, research, and other work that can realistically be managed alongside college. I'm also open to tutoring or remote internships and entry-level opportunities that don't require years of experience.
I'm trying to find something legitimate that can help me cover a meaningful part of my living expenses without having to sacrifice my education.
So I'm posting here because I could genuinely use some advice from people who have navigated financial difficulties, moved away from home for college, started earning as students, or built something for themselves with limited resources.
- What are realistic ways for a first-year college student in Delhi to start earning?
- Are there legitimate platforms, organisations, internships, or small businesses that hire students for paid writing, research, tutoring, editing, or social media work?
- If you've been in a similar situation, what helped you become financially independent without burning out or compromising your studies?
- If you work in a field where a beginner could contribute and learn, I'd appreciate advice on how to get started or where to look for opportunities.
I'm not expecting strangers on the internet to solve my problems for me. I know I have to do the work myself. But sometimes, one useful piece of advice, one genuine connection, or one opportunity can make a difference that you couldn't have created on your own.
I'm trying to give myself a fair chance at the life I moved here to build.
If you've read this far, thank you. Any practical advice, resources, or genuine leads would mean a lot.
