Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Review/Discussion Lots of room for improvement but happy with what I got together!

Was finally able to buy a decent size appartement with the ability to put my sound system! I just moved and it’s basically the first thing I installed so it still misses some decorations 😅

The record player table I made myself and the rest of my equipment was gathering dust in the attic of family members.

It doesn’t always sound the best but I’m happy I have something to start from!

If anyone had suggestions or information about anything in my system I would be happy to hear it!

Record player is technics quartz sl-q202
Speakers are technics sb-ex2
Amp is teac a-R650mk2

Tech Support Is this a solid combination?

I’m thinking about getting this combination. I fell in love with the Wharfedale evo. And I’m having problem picking the rest of the setup.

I was thinking going for the NAD C 3030S as it offers lot of things in one package (AirPlay, hdmi, etc) and I kinda like the old school look of it (I know not important)

I want to play mostly music from a streamer and a record player. Occasionally connect a tv to watch movies.

Then REL HT/1003. I heard REL subs at an audio show and loved how they played.

I’m curious if there are some other options to think of, that would offer better experience for the same amount of money.

Purchasing EU/UK I’ve been stuck for a year trying to pick a Hi-Fi setup. You guys are my last resort! (€700 Budget)

• Upvotes

Last year, I moved and wanted to upgrade my audio setup. Today, I'm still trying to figure out what to buy and I'm feeling quite confused, there are so many options, and within my budget, I can't find anything that has everything I need. Could you help me build a shopping list? You're really my last resort; I have to admit that designing a Hi-Fi system is beyond my skillset.

Budget: €700

What I have:

  • Audio-Technica AT-LP60USB
  • Cassette player B100EW
  • Samsung TV with HDMI ARC
  • PS4 (used for DVDs, Blu-rays, and CDs)

What I'm looking for:

Desktop-sized speakers (I'll be sitting at most 2 meters away):

  • Maximum 30 cm in height
  • Good enough for both music and movies

Amp:

  • 2.1 channel
  • Remote volume control

DAC / Connectivity requirements:

  • HDMI ARC input
  • Phono/turntable input
  • Line / Aux inputs (for CD player and cassette deck)
  • Remote control
  • Input indicator (display or LED indicating the active source)

Future upgrades:

  • Subwoofer
  • Dedicated CD player
  • Upgraded cassette deck

Additional context:

I don't care about aesthetics. Used modern gear is hard to find where I live, and I don't feel confident buying vintage. I mostly listen to bass-heavy metal and electronic music, and I occasionally game and watch movies.

I follow Cheapaudioman, and he seems to recommend Fosi Audio a lot, but they don't seem to have a DAC amp combo that meets all my requirements.

I nabbed these without really looking that closely at them, they’re all there, some dings in the dust caps that will pull out and the tweeters are missing the little phase plugs but they play and would some nice garage speakers, free to good home in NW Houston. Way too many projects to going and these are rougher than I want to deal with, DM if you’re local.

Review/Discussion What to look for when inspecting a used speaker?

• Upvotes

There's a seller offering ELAC debut 2.0 6.2 speakers in my area for 180 bucks. He says there is some cosmetic damage because of bad wrapping during moving. It could be a good deal, but the reason for the damage is concerning. He's willing to demo them before purchase. What should I be looking for to I don't waste $180? What things to inspect visually, and what to listen for? Never bought used speakers before.

Show and Tell 3D printed stands for my Audio-Technica AT-SP3X

Post image
57 Upvotes

Since I know this sub loves saving money, I figured you might appreciate not having to spend €70 on a couple of speaker stands. 😄

I wanted angled stands for my Audio-Technica AT-SP3X speakers, so I designed them myself, got a little help from AI with the 3D modeling, and printed my own.

They have a fixed 13° upward tilt, a rear stop to keep the speakers in place, and rubber pads at the contact points.

Each stand prints in one piece, requires no supports, and uses only about 90 g of PLA.

I also documented the whole process on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ_NMoOQS9E&t=439s

measured with umik 1. Evo 5.3 + pb1000 pro , small room, 3.54m x 3.12m 2.62 height no treatment.

the 51 hz peak still persist when measuring the mains and the sub individually. is this room mode, anything i can do to make it better? or the peak is too high to tame and cutting it may cause some clipping? should i make a filter and apply it to my wiim mini. or this listening room is a lost cause?

Hello everyone, so today i bought these second hand for €220. They are like new and a huge upgrade from the Harman Kardon HKTS9. I had to move from 5.1 to 4.1 because I don’t have a Numan centre channel to match the fronts. Has anybody had these before, or do you people have any opinions on them? Sorry for my bad English.

Review/Discussion Speakers vs headphones

I’ve just set up my first good system. A great 2.1 system that brings me so much joy. But I’ve never had a good set of headphones. So I’ve read that headphones can’t re-create that sounds stage that a good 2.1 system can doesn’t give you that chest thumping base, but I’d really like to hear some of your opinions on the differences in which you prefer and why. I understand that headphones will resolve micro-detail that no room on earth allows, because there's no room. No reflections, no modes, drivers sitting millimeters from your eardrums. Planar magnetics will do flat bass to 20 Hz with zero boom. On pure resolution-per-dollar, headphones embarrass speakers. But now that I’ve been doing a little bit of research on headphones when my pocketbook recovers I think I’m gonna go down that road and I’m sure I’ll save a bundle in comparison how much I just spent on my set up.

Purchasing AUS/NZ Amplifier upgrade/recommendations?

Hi all,

Looking at upgrading my current amp to something a bit more up to par with my speakers and TT and looking for some recommendations. I would prefer a new amp but not totally against 2nd hand/vintage.

Budget of under $900 AUD but can maybe stretch it a bit.

I’ve been using a very budget setup for the last 5 years or so which consisted of a pair of free old Marantz speakers, an amp which I found in the thrift shop for $5 and a second hand turntable.

Ive been slowly upgrading and the below is my current set up:

Wiim Pro
Audio Technica AT-LP120XUSB (upgraded to a AT-VM95ML stylus)
Wharfedale Diamond 12.2 speakers
Kenwood DP-49 CD player
Audio Dimension The Pillar Speaker Stands
Kenwood KA-894 Amp (1994 model from what I can tell?)

Most of the time I listen to vinyl or digital; occasionally CDs. I listen to a lot of Rock, Blues, Jazz, Rockabilly from the 50s – 60s and a little bit of modern stuff (Big Thief, Fontaines D.C.,  Radiohead).

Ideally I would like an amp with a remote, but not essential.

Thank you!

Review/Discussion better alternative for edifier e1280dbs for metal/grindcore?

I'm currently using an edifer e1280dbs connected by opt through my kenwood dvf 3530 dvd player to listen to music on cd. i listen to mostly metal music which can be anything from gothic metal to brutal death metal or grindcore, so what are good speakers alternative for those genres? im looking for clarity, non muddy bass, overall just something that sounds better than the edifier that doesnt cost way too much like my budget is 130-280 dollars.

Review/Discussion Is Edifier 1280DBs a decent Studio Monitor for 14K or $140?

I just purchased these from Amazon after researching for a few days. I was leaning towards MR4 But then ended up buying these.

Are these better than MR4? I need these for video production as currently I was using basic speakers.

Let me know if there’s something better at same.
