Shopping and purchase advice

To help others answer your question, consider using this format.

To help reduce the repetitive questions, here are a few of the cheapest systems we are willing to recommend for a computer desktop:

$100: Edifier R1280T Powered Bookshelf Speakers Amazon (US) / Amazon (DE)

  • Does not require a separate amplifier and does include cables.

$400: Kali LP-6 v2 Powered Studio Monitors Amazon (US) / Thomann (EU)

  • Not sold in pairs, requires additional cables and hardware, available in white/black.
  • Require a preamplifier for volume control - eg Focusrite Scarlett Solo

Setup troubleshooting and general help

Before asking a question, please check the commonly asked questions in our FAQ.

Examples of questions that are considered general help support:

  • How can I fix issue X (e.g.: buzzing / hissing) on my equipment Y?
  • Have I damaged my equipment by doing X, or will I damage my equipment if I do X?
  • Is equipment X compatible with equipment Y?
  • What's the meaning of specification X (e.g.: Output Impedance / Vrms / Sensitivity)?
  • How should I connect, set up or operate my system (hardware / software)?

$70k on ebay, w/ free shipping! 😅 But seriously, I am genuinely curious to know from a redditor who's experienced these: Are they just a ridiculous status symbol or actually god tier/worth the price tag? Who are they for? I mean which music consumer and what size space would these make sense for?

Edit: its 4 towers total, sorry

Discussion Beginner audiophile here. Checked out some high end audio equipment and I think I found the sound and brand that I like now.

Won’t give out the exact location of the store since I feel it’s better to keep anonymity but wanted to show off all the equipment.

My dad knew I was starting my audio journey and he wanted me to check out an audio store so I could actually listen to speakers and see what I liked. He didn’t want me to make the same mistake he made of buying JBL studio monitors, liking them, and then hearing vintage ADS speakers and actually liking them better.

So we went to this store and I told him I was interested in a few brands such as Bowers and Wilkins and KEF. We first heard some of the JBL summit series which were great but the bass rumble kinda ruined for me. I’m not a fan of high volume and bass rumble. We then listened to some Sonus Faber speakers which me and my dad happened to not be impressed by. But then the person working there connected some B&W floorstanding speakers and it blew me away.

It was the exact sound I was looking for. Nice low end, clear trebles, vocals lifelike, minimal bass rumble. I could just take it all in and enjoy it.

I finally found the brand I have been looking for after bouncing back and forth between what audio brand I wanted to get for my first speakers and I think B&W is the way to go.

Just wanted to share my experience with you all and tell you guys how much I am starting to enjoy the hobby already!

TLDR: My dad took me to an audio store as a beginner audiophile and we tried out different speakers and I landed on B&W. B&W will now be my go to brand for speakers.

In terms of equipment and environment, this is the best my room has even and I’m pretty excited to share it with you all!

It’s been an ongoing project of experimenting with placement, acoustic treatment, and finding a balance between getting the most out of the system and creating a space I genuinely enjoy spending time in.

The room is treated with broadband absorption along the side and rear walls, along with substantial floor-to-ceiling bass trapping in the corners. Given the relatively modest dimensions and the size of the speakers, getting the room under control has been an important part of the process.

Sonically, I’ve always gravitated toward systems that prioritize dynamics, scale, and rhythmic drive. The JBLs deliver an effortless, almost live quality that I find particularly engaging with rock, funk, and other rhythm-heavy music. Drums have genuine impact, bass is tight, textured and controlled, and there’s a sense of immediacy that makes it easy to get lost in a groove.

One of my more recent changes was replacing my Stressless recliner recliner positioned in the sweet spot with two smaller lounge chairs. It’s technically a compromise in terms of imaging precision, but the room feels considerably more open, comfortable, and inviting. The JBLs still produce a convincing sense of scale and separation from either position, even if the stereo image isn’t quite as locked in as it would be sitting dead center.

Ultimately, I’ve come to appreciate the room as much as the equipment itself. It’s a place to put on a record, settle in for a few hours, and enjoy the music.

Current Signal Chain:

Speakers: JBL 4722N Two-Way ScreenArray® Cinema Loudspeakers

Subwoofer: MartinLogan Depth I

Amplifier: Benchmark AHB2

Pre-Amp: Schiit Freya+

DAC: Schiit Gungir Multibit

Phono Pre-Amplifier: SPL Phonos Duo

Turntable #1 (Reference): Denon DP3000 (in high mass plinth), Dynavector DV-505, Denon 103R

Turntable (Daily Driver): Music Hall Stealth, Audio-Technica AT-OC9XML

Show & Tell My Vintage Setup

Just finished redecorating and finally set my Hi-Fi gear back up, so I am super glad to be able to listen again!

I appreciate that vintage gear isn’t to everyone’s taste, but it’s taken a long time to collect and I must say it sounds incredible.

Back in 2023, I had everything serviced by a Chartered Electrical Engineer who specialised in vintage Hi-Fi, so it’s all working beautifully.

The Equipment:
Speakers: Celestion Ditton 442
Tube Amps (Currently in use): Leak Point One Stereo & Rogers Cadet with Mullard tubes
Solid State Amps: Quad 44 and 405-2
Headphone Amps (Rarely used): Little Dot MK II & Yaqin with NOS tubes made in the USSR, which all sounds surprisingly good
Turntable: Linn Axis + Basik Plus tonearm
Stylus: Ortofon 2M Bronze
Interconnects: Van Damme cables + Nakamichi plugs
Anyway, congrats if you read this far! I’m wondering what people’s thoughts are?

Ended up finding a Krell Kid. I wanted to post this in Audiophile as this dock was designed by Krell to
to allow audiophiles use an iPod as high fidelity source. I have a bunch of iPods still. Felt like this cool audio piece to share.

I know of the regular albums which always feature in the "Best Production" category on Reddit regularly but what's an album you love for its music but know it just doesn't cut the mustard on its production.

After work on Friday I spotted this sitting in the grass by the curb with some other unassuming bits of trash. I stopped to see and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a vintage Marantz receiver. I will be attempting to clean it up and use it instead of my vintage Realistic!

After using A2+ for 7 years I decide I needed to upgrade. This is my first hi fi setup. It’s my gaming pc but I like to watch movies and listen to music as well. I’m a sucker for matching equipment and decided to go with the dx5 ii and topping mini 300. The speakers are 606 S3. I also picked up hd490 which sound awesome. Open to feedback or a good roast if I made the wrong choice.

Discussion What to do with aging equipment?

Thumbnail

Hi all,

I have an Anthem D2v from 2009, an Anthem P5 driving RBH TS-30LSEs and center channel, and an Anthem A2 driving RBH surrounds. I have music on daily since 2009 where I noticed maybe 10-15 yrs ago that the audio was low when you first turned everything on. Adjust the volume so you can hear it and in an hour when everything warms up, you realize, “why is everything so loud?”. Wasn’t sure if it was the preprocessor or the amp, but bought a cable to connect an audio source directly to the amp and it the amp/speakers seem to be fine. I reached out to anthem, but if they come back with a crazy estimate to fix the d2v, I will probably look elsewhere. I’m not sure if I need to spend crazy money on a replacement. I haven’t followed the scene too closely. What would you do? Are there specialist who even fix digital equipment? I’ve seen videos of specialists who fix old equipment and replace all old capacitors and such, but am unsure if people like that exist for more modern equipment. The pic with the screen was composited with a day pic and one with the projector and a dark room.

TIA!

Discussion Am I wrong to think that even really high end speakers won't be able to replicate the sound of live bass guitar?

• Upvotes

I was at a small indoor live concert(rock genre) and I realized that really good speakers at home can somewhat replicate the sound of vocals but it seemed like the powerful sound of bass guitar is really hard to be replicated at home.

What I mean is that if I hear the vocal part at a live concert and at home playing their recorded album, the replication is it's good enough but for the bass guitar, there's just so much difference(probably because the live session uses a dedicated set of amp/speakers just for the bass).

So if I have a separate and dedicate set of amp/speakers at home just for the sound from bass guitar but basically all the commercial CD albums do not have "separated recordings" of the bass guitar.

I want to know if there's some techniques to replicate the actual sound of the bass guitar at home?

Discussion Whole Home Audio Design

• Upvotes

Hi guys,

I'm creating a plan for a whole-home audio system. I'm working with a local "custom integrator", however his recommendations for the equipment (i.e. in-ceiling speakers) are far higher than I would like to spend.

I think this it at least partially because they are pushing an the integrator-exclusive audio equipment company "Origin Acoustics", who deals directly with custom-integrators and does not sell to the end user. They don't publish their pricing online, which I presume is deliberate to keep the end-user blind to the actual cost of the equipment. The speakers they would like to install include:

- Origin Acoustics D85 (quantity: 11) Director 8" Series fully-pivoting 3-Way In-Ceiling Loudspeaker with 8" IMG Woofer. product specs

- Origin Acoustics D101 (quantity: 4) Director 10" Series fully-pivoting 3-Way In-Ceiling Loudspeaker with Dome Tweeter. product specs

- Origin Acoustics Entertainment Towers (quantity: 2) New in the line. product specs

I would really like to find speakers or similar-to-better quality, and source them myself and let my integrator do the install, but I do not have enough knowledge about whole home audio to handle this on my own. But I was thinking it would be as simple as going on Crutchfield.com (or similar source) and source the speakers myself.

Am I missing something in thinking about it this way?

Thanks for reading!
edit: floor plans in case anyone is interested

Discussion Even been in the middle of a physically demanding equipment install and thought WTF am I doing this for? Delivery of 6 foot tall electrostatic tweeters

Thumbnail
gallery
113 Upvotes

Yesterday I received a beey large crate with perhaps one of the best tweeters ever made. They are 6 feet tall and meant to stand next to my main 'stat panels.

(Once I install the footers they will be the same height as main panels)

Being in NYC I don't have place to store large crates, so I had to completely disassemble the crate and drag it on a dolly 6 blocks to my parking garage for storage.

While I'm pulling this unwieldy crate on a dolly, I'm really questioning my pursuit of this hobby.

Of course I'm extremely happy with the tweeters so far, and just beginning the process of dialing in the best voltage for the output I want, toe in of main panels, room treatment, etc, but has anyone else questioned their sanity during an install?

I hate to say it; but I am officially a “covers on” guy now. Of course they look awesome naked, but the look of the covers is also very sleek and professional looking. Later this weekend Tav goes up higher on the stand and the console becomes the table for my TT, Wiim Ultra & future CD player.

measured with umik 1. Evo 5.3 + pb1000 pro , small room, 3.54m x 3.12m 2.62 height no treatment.

the 51 hz peak still persist when measuring the mains and the sub individually. is this room mode, anything i can do to make it better? or the peak is too high to tame and cutting it may cause some clipping? should i make a filter and apply it to my wiim mini. or this listening room is a lost cause?

I can’t recommend this enough. I was hesitant because they’re sourced from digital masters, but the remastering and pressing is worth it. Listening to it on a LInn LP 12 Sondek, CH precision amp and preamp, Wattson/Madison phono stage, all transparent power and cables, and Wilson WATT puppies. If you live in or around Portland, Oregon, stop by Echo Audio/Definitive Audio, ask for Jason I’ll give you a listen.

I just bought this pair of Tri-Art Open 3 Reference. Not an easy speaker to setup so far. Lots of trial and error to do to set them up properly ahead.
