[Rant] to whoever stole boxes of candy from boo at the zoo tonight

...you literally stole candy from children tonight. I was volunteering at the exits and children were CRYING because once the storm passed and the party restarted, so many candy booths had to shut down because you snatched and ran off with boxes of candy during the storm. A lot of families came after the storm and didn't even get much candy in the end.

Edit to add: yes, I needed to bitch about this lol. Although I don't have kids, or even want kids, it completely sets me off when selfishness affects children.

[Rant] $40K, yes 40, in unpaid speeding tickets. The Keystone State isn’t sending their best

159 tickets. Think about that.

It’s depressing that 1/3 of people in DC make less money each year than this guy has in unpaid fines.

Why do we permit out of state drivers to violate our laws with impunity? Ward 9 remains undefeated, as always. Same reason we’re banning Waymo to protect out of state uber drivers over our own safety.

[News] An update from the Purple Line (spoiler alert: it's still not open) Spoiler

Went jogging around Bethesda this week to explore the progress on the Purple Line and the associated bike path. I'm still hoping for a mostly protected loop between the Capitol Crescent Trail and Rock Creek Park for biking in the somewhat near future. Here's what I saw:

- It's still closed but it seems close to finished! All tracks and infrastructure are in place as far as I could see. The bike trail is fully paved and there were construction vehicles parked on the bike trail.

- The construction team seemed to be working on ramps. Specifically, on the north side of the rail track at Pearl Street, and at the East/West Hwy underpass.

- There does not seem to be a place to access the trail from the south side. Google Maps seems like there should be an access point by the Elm Street Park on the south side of the rail track but it didn't seem to be the case in person.

- I was hoping there might be a staged opening of the bike path before the trains, but it seems like the bike path is being used for construction vehicles so my bet is it won't open early :(

Hope that helps! Curious to hear other thoughts, especially farther from downtown Bethesda which I didn't make it to.

[Discussion] "Executive Privilege” at the Kennedy Center is ABSURD

Trump is now invoking executive privilege to prevent Rep. Joyce Beatty's lawyers from obtaining documents and testimony about his involvement in the Kennedy Center's management and closure.

Here's the problem: Trump is chairman of the Kennedy Center's Board of Trustees, but that's a position separate from his responsibilities as President of the United States.

The Justice Department argues that because the President appoints Kennedy Center trustees, communications about managing the institution can fall under presidential communications privilege - even some conversations that don't involve Trump directly.

Beatty's lawyers are trying to determine whether the Board made an independent, informed decision to close the building. The government is fighting to keep certain communications out of their hands.

Judge Cooper hasn't ruled on the privilege dispute yet.

Meanwhile, six beautiful theaters remain dark, and JFK's name remains shrouded in that silly tarp.

The Washington Post explains the legal dispute:

[Protest] No kings march at memorial bridge today

How are people planning to get to the No Kings rally today? Arlington Cemetery is closed. I'm injured and can't ride my bike. How can I get there?

Does anyone know if the metro parking lit will be open?

[Rant] A polite request to the usually good dog owners out there: please don’t throw dog poop in the smaller residential trash bins

DC’s Sanitation workers grab household bags out of small street trash cans by hand. There isn’t a giant machine lifting them up and shaking it out upside down. Somebody else who doesn’t own your dog eventually has to deal with it when poop falls down and gets stuck at the bottom below household trash or bursts on top of the existing bags. I’m pretty sure a machine gets the bigger bins, though.

If not for your neighbors who might have to find strangers’ loose dog poop at the bottom of their trash cans, consider doing the workers who have to deal with it every day a favor and put them in a larger bag.
