Best pupusas in Wheaton/Aspen Hill? 👀

I get off work at 8 tonight and I’m craving some GOOD pupusas 😂 Looking for recommendations in the Wheaton/Aspen Hill area!
I love cheese pupusas, but I’m open to anything with meat too. I need the whole experience though. Good curtido (cabbage slaw), flavorful salsa roja, and pupusas that are fresh, cheesy, and made RIGHT.
Bonus points if they’re open after 8:30 tonight. I don’t mind a little wait if the food is worth it.

Where are y’all getting the best pupusas around here?? 👀

Is there a good way to find garage sales or estate sales happening in MoCo that isn’t just driving around and noticing signs?

6000 Executive Boulevard

I'm having an MRI done at the Adventist Imaging Center at 6000 Executive Boulevard (Rockville/North Bethesda). I live more upcounty and normally do everything up this way because I prefer avoiding the traffic congestion down there and parking issues.

Does anyone know if you have to pay for parking at this building? Or how does it work? I'm asking just because I want to be prepared for whatever the situation is because up this way, everything is free parking. I just don't want to be there and not know what to do and I"m already a bit nervous about the MRI.

Why we need a kitchen sink approach on addressing housing affordability (TL;DR, solutions are complex and we’re probably gonna mess each one up at least a little, so we need to try everything)

Prompted by a lot of things, but please indulge this long ramble about why I as a local housing advocate think we need to try both tenant friendly regulations and reforms that make it easier to build housing (yes including market rate) even though those instincts can sometimes conflict.

Or don’t, I’m not your dad.

I’ve talked before about how whether you are talking about adding more homes or having tenant protections/rent regulations, ultimately what you are talking about is leverage, and even when groups break into various camps that focus on one over the other, they are pushing for the same thing, leverage for people looking for homes, and that is true and fine and (mostly) good.

I, (and research generally to be clear) do believe that the biggest single barrier to more affordability is a shortage of homes in certain geographic areas relative to demand, and that the biggest step we can and should take is allowing more homes by getting rid of zoning that allows *only* detached single family houses and replace it with zoning that *still allows those houses* (much to the contrary of claims made by people that oppose zoning reform) alongside townhomes and du/tri/quad/whatever plexes and in many areas apartment and condo buildings… the list goes on.

I’m not going to turn this into a bibliography but yes, adding homes help because supply and demand applies to housing, and also as households get smaller not everyone needs or wants a house, or they will value commute over home type, or… you get it, options are good.

Final bit on this, yes even new expensive apartments help affordability, yes in part due to filtering but also due to the fact that they are still cheaper than buying a house nearby, generally (I wrote about this a while ago and you can read me get into mortgage calculator arguments like a real cool guy here if you are very bored https://ggwash.org/view/93183/what-i-talk-about-when-i-talk-about-luxury-housing)

Alllll that said, zoning laws don’t command things to be built, they allow it, we can and should invest more public resources in housing with everything from vouchers to social housing to traditional affordable housing, and I go to hearings on those too, but when it comes to for profit housing, which most people have, do, and will live in, many factors come into play on what does or doesn’t get built. (More on that here https://ggwash.org/view/68435/heres-where-montgomery-county-is-and-isnt-growing)

Financing can fall through, regional economic health can decline and scare off investors, rent regulations (which I think can be good or bad depending on magnitude, more on that in a bit) can scare them off too, fairly or unfairly, interest rates can make borrowing expensive (and yes, developers almost always have to borrow a lot of money to build, despite people thinking they can just minds do whatever whenever), material costs can get high, compromises to mollify neighboring anger can cut profitability and extend timelines, which extends costs, you get it. If you’re still reading this. If you are, you have impressed me and you have my thanks and my apologies. You’re almost done, kinda.

We can and should do things to make these investments more feasible and changing zoning isn’t enough, and tax policy and single stair reform and parking minimum changes and a whole bunch of things can play into that, separate rant, but no matter what we do, there are going to be barriers to the housing we want and need getting built, and while I’m optimistic that more and more people get the need for change, there will always be people that justify opposing it, and always be projects that fall through or never get proposed.

So while we should try to fix that, and god am I trying, … yeah when I know for a thousand reasons not all the housing I want to see get built will get built… I’m gonna be okay pushing for a moderate rent stabilization law that can help maintain affordable units if I think the impact on supply won’t be that crazy. finding that line is tricky and I don’t know where it is and neither do you. (I think we also need good cause eviction protection and a few other things to help give tenants leverage, and of course we want things affordable for buyers too, but this is already too long)

I supported and still support MoCo’s law though as I get into in my “I need everyone to shut the **** up about rent stabilization” piece, we’ll see how that goes. (https://ggwash.org/view/103176/people-need-to-take-a-deep-breath-over-rent-control-in-montgomery-county)

Yes, it can impact the bottom line and yes we should not be flippant in doing that and when we do impact it we should try to offset it elsewhere. But in a world full of legal, social, and financial barriers to new housing, we are not one zoning change away from having enough homes for people near jobs and transit and all that, we just aren’t, so giving leverage in other ways plays a role.

I don’t think we’ll ever have enough housing, we absolutely could, and I absolutely think we’ll get better, but I just don’t think we’ll ever get all the way there.

What’s the right balance? Good question. I won’t pretend to know. These things are dynamic and ultimately subjective and we will, all of us, sometimes mess it up, but we gotta try all of it.

Food / Drink In your opinion, which side of the Potomac has better Korean food: MoCo/HoCo/PGC or NOVA?

Considering MD has Ellicott City and Rockville, I was wondering if that puts it at least on par with Annandale/Centreville?

Another Pedestrian Death - solutions?

I came upon the scene right after it happened. If I had to guess, this woman was probably in the crosswalk based on where she was in the road.

Seems like there are pedestrian/cyclist deaths happening all the time now in MoCo. It is ironic because the powers that be love to pitch mass transit/biking/ditching your car.

I wont completely say that pedestrians and cyclists are not to blame. Ton of people jaywalking all over the place. Riding a bike at 11pm with dark clothing and no lights on? Yea, you are asking for it.

I think they need to start throwing the book at the people that cause these types of accidents. Yea, some of these are totally accidents, and no one woke up wanting to kill a pedestrian, but accidents have consequences.

Food / Drink Does anyone know any restaurants that have tteokgalbi?

Very specific.. I know.

I used to work at a dental lab in Centerville that would cater Korean food every Friday and we'd usually have tteokgalbi and I've just been craving it for a while now. I'm afraid to smoke up my apartment if I try to make it myself. Photo for reference.

Rainy days always make me crave those Fridays.. I moved back to MD and the Korean food here isn't the same 😔

Had some disappointing Gamjatang at Hwa Gae Jung Tuh :(

Ride On has re-introduced our late night only courtesy stop program.

Passengers are able to request a drop-off along the route when and where it is safe to do so, with the following limitations:

  • After 9:00 p.m. only
  • Exclusively for drop-offs (no boarding)
  • Front door only when exiting
  • Must be on the regular route (bus will not divert)
  • Location must be safe to stop (operator's discretion)
  • No intersection, highway, or freeway stopping
  • Express buses are exempt from this initiative

NOTE: Passengers should inform the operator when boarding if they know they will request a courtesy stop; when nearing the drop off location, pull the bell cord, proceed to the front door, and ask the operator to stop at a safe location.

General News **NEW** The The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that there will be a One-Day Closure of Cabin John Bridge on MacArthur Boulevard on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

Post image
19 Upvotes

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close the one-lane Cabin John Bridge, also called the Union Arch Bridge, on MacArthur Boulevard in Cabin John on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a rain date of Sunday, Nov. 8.

This closure is for an annual inspection and completion of minor repairs to the bridge. Annual bridge inspections involve hands-on checks of structural components that require yearly monitoring, followed by targeted minor repairs to address wear and tear. Inspectors look for concrete cracking, steel corrosion, section loss, and bearing or joint movement.

Detoured traffic will follow Wilson Lane to River Road and Seven Locks Road to River Road.

For questions about the inspection, contact Donald Fisher, Maintenance General Foreman for Washington Aqueduct, US Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District at 202-834-3731.

This work is not being conducted by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation and is being reported as a courtesy for the traveling public.
