A new University of Maryland Recreation and Wellness policy will require club sports teams to receive written approval from professional staff before sharing any external communication, according to an email sent to teams on Wednesday.
Phoebe Murphy, RecWell’s club sports and camps coordinator, notified team leaders of the policy change Wednesday afternoon in an email obtained by The Diamondback. The announcement comes days after the university indefinitely suspended the club tennis team after members emailed “racist imagery” to other collegiate teams in the region prior to its fall tournament in College Park, The Diamondback reported Monday.
The graphic distributed by the club tennis team depicted Ku Klux Klan hoods, including eye holes, in the lower left and top right portions of the Maryland flag, according to a Tuesday morning social media post from the Howard University Tennis Club, one of the teams that received the graphic.
In a follow-up email sent to teams Wednesday evening, Murphy said the types of information that now require approval include emails, social media posts, team programs, documents, flyers or other attachments. Club sports teams must submit any external communication they wish to share with individuals or organizations not affiliated with the university for approval by professional staff at least 48 hours before its intended distribution.
Each team’s president and treasurer are also required to sign a form acknowledging the policy change by 11:59 p.m. Friday, according to Murphy’s email. There are no exceptions to the policy, she added, and violations could potentially lead to “all club sports activities and events” being cancelled.
