RULES

Hey there folks,

Please read all of this before participating here.

It has come to my attention that our rules are not showing up for some users so here is a list of all of our rules and some explanations.

  1. No meetups or fear mongering.

Do not post about meeting up here. We do not have the resources to vet this kind of thing and I will not be responsible for any of your deaths due to people taking advantage of our fear. If you post about meeting up you will be banned.

No fear mongering. Any claims about major things happening must have sources via news. No crazy "What if" questions. (Ex: what if martial law is declared. What if they start dropping nukes. What if they round up all the women and start acting out the handmaids tale.) Knock it off. All that crazy belongs on the main prepper sub.

  1. Don’t be an asshole.

We are all adults here. We should be able to have adult conversations. We can debate without outright putting someone down. Be civil.

Nazi and MAGAts rhetoric will not be tolerated here. Trolls will not be tolerated here. If you choose to report trolls via ModMail, please include links to the offenders profile and troll comments. I'm happy to ban if you lay out the case and do the digging of them being a troll.

  1. Content must be prepping related. Read this entire rule before submitting.

Submissions must be directly related to preparedness, have substance, seek information, and generate discussion. All claims must have attached news sources.

Just informing of an event/article/etc,

making unsourced claims,

complaining or talking about being scared is not sufficient.

ChatGPT or other AI-generated content is also not allowed.

#Users who violate this rule will be temp banned

  1. Crossposted and news article content

Clickbait is not permitted. Posts with Links to other posts/subreddits or to external sites must include a description of the page as well as some points for discussion. As a general rule, if the content and nature of the site cannot be determined without clicking on the link, the submission is not appropriate.

Just posting a link is not allowed.

We are not here to market to. If it feels like you're trying to sell us on something or a product your post will be removed and you will also likely be removed.

Moderators may use their discretion to remove submissions with links that may be suspicious or inappropriately provided.

  1. Male participation

Even though this is a sub based on women and our prepping needs men are allowed to participate here. That said, Men, If you mansplain, if you are an asshole, if you think you know best, STFU. You’re welcome to participate in the discussion of being an ally to women, you’re welcome to ask questions, and you’re welcome to offer advice on a topic asked if it is in your expertise. But this sub is by and large not for you. If you get sassy about it you will be removed. Ladies, this rule does not mean you get to be an unwarranted asshole to men.

  1. Daily megathread

All OMFG news that doesn't relate to prepping should be posted on the daily megathread.

All complaining should be done on the daily megathread.

All questions about spouses not agreeing or complaining about spouses should be done on the daily megathread.

All questions about leaving or fleeing the country should be posted on the Leaving the US MEGATHREAD : r/TwoXPreppers

  1. Search first

Before asking a question here, use the search feature of reddit, Google, or another search engine to make sure your question hasn't already been answered. Moderators may use their discretion to remove posts involving questions that are easily answerable via a search and/or do not contribute to positive discussions here. If you are asking a question about "where to start" your post will likely be removed. Please see the Where to start? START HERE! : r/TwoXPreppers stickied post/megathread and check the subreddit wiki.

  1. Questions about removal.

If you have questions about removal or banning please reread the rules and or the sticky. You have violated our rules and we likely will not get back to you. If you would like to argue about tremp banning or post removal you’re probably risking permanent ban. So tread carefully.

MEGATHREAD (mod use only) Where to start? START HERE!

Hello everyone. This is the "Where do I start" megathread.

If you are new to prepping here are some good basic places to start.

  1. Save $1,000 for an emergency fund. An emergency fund is one of the most used preps you will ever have. Both big and small emergencies happen to us all every single day. Blown tire? Unexpected medical emergency? Unexpected home repair? $1,000 will save your ass far more often than a bug out bag. 59% of Americans can not handle an unexpected $1,000 bill. Put yourself ahead of the pack and get that emergency fund started.
  2. Start stocking extras of what you eat, and eat what you stock. You should have 2 weeks of non perishable food that you know how to and can cook.
  • if you're on a tight budget don't feel like you have to go out and buy everything at once. When you're out and about grab an extra one or two of what you are already getting. Get a few extra cans of spaghetti sauce, an extra box of spaghetti, an extra can of veggies or whatever you eat.
  • Rice IS a cheap and delicious carb that is a great filler. Dry Beans on the other hand take time to get used to cooking. Do not feel like you have to invest in this if you don't know how to cook them. We prep for Tuesday, not doomsday. If you'd like to buy beans, I would suggest buying canned beans and not dry beans.
  • Have a first aid kit in your home. Know where your medical supplies are and have a stock of them. Band aids, Isopropyl alcohol, Antibacterial ointment, Antihistamines, pain killers, etc. Real world injuries happen and you should be able to handle most of them. There are some great resources out there for building your own first aid kit and there are plenty of premade kits out there that you can buy.
  • Have spare household items. Don't stock just food but have a spare bottle of shampoo, box of tampons, dishwasher detergent, household cleaner, toiletpaper. Etc. Whatever you use the most of you should stock up on the most of.
  1. Have all of your important documents in a safe place and have copies of all your important documents. Birth certificate, marriage certificate, SS Card, Insurance cards, Insurance policies, Passports, all sorts of licenses, etc.
  2. Bug Out Bag. Or BOB for short. This is a bag or backpack that you should have to gtfo ASAP in the event of emergency. You should have at minimum $100 in cash, a change of comfortable clothes, copies of all your important documents, chargers for your phone or devices.

Only after you have your basic preps covered should you be going above and beyond that.

Edit: Another user pointed out another basic prep that I forgot to mention.

Have a basic tool kit and know how to use it. A basic tool kit would include a hammer, pliers, screw drivers of both phillips head and flat head (but really you should own a plug in drill as well with a kit of different heads), snips, an adjustable wrench, a monkey wrench, and an assortment of different screws, nails, and zip ties. There are some great premade tool boxes out there for first timers. Unless you have crazy money don't feel like you need to go out and buy the best of everything all at once. Having basic things and then as you learn to use them invest in better quality. Lots of this stuff can be picked up for cheap at thrift stores, garage sales, and harbor freight.

If you own a vehicle you should also own a socket set in both metric and imperial.

❓ Question ❓ how do you prep good chocolate?

To prep mediocre chocolate, and the possibility of many chocolate-flavored foods, we can just stash some unopened containers of our favorite cocoa powder in the back of the pantry, and slowly rotate through them as we bake, prepare beverages, and otherwise use them up.

but good chocolate -- the kind that comes in bars and is made via various fiddly processes with names like conching and tempering, the kind that gets everywhere if you let it melt or sometimes recrystallizes almost powdery-white if it goes through too many thermal cycles -- is trickier to arrange an indefinite supply of.

I've had some success with just including a lot of chocolate chips in my deep pantry, but they're kind of more toward cocoa powder's end of the chocolate product quality spectrum. I know that there are storage tricks for good coffee -- a 50lb bag of green beans in a cool dry place will last for ages, and you can roast and grind them in small batches as desired to have the real fresh-roasted deal -- so it seems like there might be parallel tricks for chocolate, though they'd be unlikely to involve the actual beans.

So, if you're currently happy with your chocolate preps, would you reply to this post with how you're doing it? thanks :)

Product Find Hard Plastic Store Bought Water

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I want to store some extra water for emergencies and the only spot is against a wall behind the couch. What are the best brands for store bought 1 gallon water jugs that are made from hard plastic? I have concerns about softer plastic potentially leaking.

Thanks in advance.

❓ Question ❓ UK specific: what camping gas stove to get to cook inside? Meals for one or max two people. There are so many, and I don't even have the spare cash to start building up an off grid sort of set up

Thank you everyone. I bought one, got some gas canisters and a powerbank, too.

❓ Question ❓ Help with talking to Gas Fitter

After the Ice Storm in January, I’ve tried to start prepping. Got most of the basics covered and now I’m ready to have someone come out and look into adding a gas line for backup heat.

I just don’t know how to describe my current setup or ask for what I want an estimate for. Last time I tried to ask this question on another sub I got flamed. Just don’t want to call a professional and sound dumb.

Current Setup: HVAC is has gas connection but electric blower

Ideal Setup: Keep HVAC as is. Add additional gas line for backup gas heat. I’m thinking a wall mounted furnace that we can removed in the summer? It would just be backup heat in case of power outage.

I also want to get additional lines added for gas water heater and gas stove. (future purchases but I’d like to see the estimate of having lines ran now)

I’d also like a line for my generator. I was told we could use the HVAC’s gas connection to power the generator during the ice storm. Is it possible to have a line installed so we don’t have to swap anything out?

Sorry if this sounds crazy but I’d rather you guys say it’s crazy than look crazy to someone in person. Lol

Resources 📜 Prep or pantry Apps?

I've recently been looking for a good way to manage my pantry and I'd like to know what others are using. I've found a few different apps, and when i posted on IK prepping groups I've had a few revommended:

* Preptracker

* Readicache

* Beagleprep

* Stashguard

And at least one other one that is due to launch soon. All if them store things locally on your phone and don't seem to want shady permissions, but i get that not everyone trusts apps, and for good reason.

Most pantry apps I've seen seem fixated on integrating with your shopping, but I just want to track what I've prepped for my family, especially the use by dates, and other useful things.

I've only just had a quick look at these apps, I intend to try them all briefly and then pick whatever feels most suited. But I'm open to trying others if people here have any recommendations! So if you use sonething else I'd be keen to hear about it.

I was considering writing a post summarising their strengths and weaknesses in case that makes choosing an app easier for others in the future.

I've had the devs of some of these apps reach out; which is great as they sound keen to try to add features peppers want.

❓ Question ❓ How useful is a female urinal device?

Believe it or not I have never gone to the bathroom anywhere but a Western style toilet. Whenever we camped there were always facilities and I have a strong bladder and stomach so I’ve never had to go in an awkward place. And I never used the squat toilets when I lived abroad. I have never squatted in my life.

I have a little bathroom pouch for my emergency bag and I was wondering if it might be handy to pack a female urinal device to help with going out in the bush if necessary. The pants I would be wearing don’t have a zipper, so they would need to still be pulled down, but I thought it might be handy to at least be able to stand and pee and direct it outwards rather than squat when I am not accustomed to it and risk it getting on my legs and pants.

Does anyone have any experience using one of these? Of course I realize I’d still have to pop a squat to poop, but I figure that has less of a chance of getting on me than peeing, and I would be doing it less often.

❓ Question ❓ How do you prep for Martial Law? "Martial Law Explained as Trump Allies Raise Option Ahead of Midterms"

1.2k Upvotes

Multiple news sources are reporting that the Trump Administration is considering declaring martial law. Are there further preps needed beyond what you'd normally do for civil unrest? I've linked more sources at the bottom. This is the full article from Newsweek.

https://www.newsweek.com/martial-law-trump-allies-midterm-elections-explained-12580815

"Martial Law Explained as Trump Allies Raise Option Ahead of Midterms."

"Allies of President Donald Trump are openly discussing martial law and other extraordinary federal action if they conclude that next month's midterm elections have been "rigged."

The proposals come less than three weeks before Election Day and raise questions about what power a president actually has to intervene in elections. Under existing federal law, however, a president cannot simply declare martial law to postpone an election, seize ballots, or take control of state election systems.

Axios reported Friday that prominent MAGA election activists have advocated extraordinary measures while warning of election-security problems they believe could emerge in November. Axios noted that no evidence shows the elections will be rigged and that some proposed actions extend beyond Trump's legal authority.

Peter Ticktin, an attorney for election activist Tina Peters and a childhood friend of Trump, said during a September 30 Rumble call for MAGA election activists that "there would have to be martial law in the event…\[of\] another rigged election."

Ticktin subsequently told Axios that authorities would probably need to commandeer ballots and election equipment to investigate what happened before proceeding further. He told the Daily Beast that his proposal applied only to what he described as a "nightmare scenario" in which foreign interests took control of election equipment and affected the result.

Peters participated in the September 30 call and met with Trump this month, according to Axios. She was convicted in 2024 of crimes connected to a breach of election equipment before Colorado Governor Jared Polis commuted her sentence this year. Peters and Ticktin also visited Trump at the White House in late June.

Another participant, Gregory Stenstrom, advocated pausing the election over security concerns or, alternatively, using the National Emergencies Act to compel changes in how states administer elections. Peters has also promoted replacing voting machines with hand-marked paper ballots and, where possible, conducting manual recounts.

What Is Martial Law?

Martial law generally describes an extraordinary situation in which military authority displaces civilian government in a particular location. No federal statute defines the term, and the U.S. Constitution does not mention martial law.

Supreme Court precedent on the subject is limited and largely dates to the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Brennan Center for Justice says federal and state officials have declared martial law at least 68 times in U.S. history.

Under certain circumstances authorized by law, the military can assist civilian authorities while those institutions continue to function.

Martial law traditionally describes the far more extreme step of military authorities taking the place of civilian ones, potentially including soldiers performing policing functions and military tribunals handling matters ordinarily heard by civilian courts.

Could Trump Declare Martial Law? What the Constitution Says

The president's power is far more limited than the phrase "martial law" suggests. The Constitution does not expressly grant the president authority to declare it, and no existing federal statute explicitly authorizes the president to do so. The Supreme Court has also never conclusively ruled that the federal government has a general martial-law power or established that a president could exercise one without congressional authorization.

The Brennan Center says that a unilateral presidential declaration would run afoul of the framework the Supreme Court established in Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer (1952). Congress has enacted extensive restrictions on domestic military activity, including the Posse Comitatus Act, which generally prohibits federal armed forces from participating in civilian law enforcement unless Congress authorizes it. Because Congress has legislated extensively in this area, the report concludes that a president could not override those restrictions merely by invoking martial law.

Jasmine Mines, an attorney whose practice includes federal criminal defense and post-conviction constitutional litigation, told Newsweek that allegations of a rigged election would not provide a president with authority to impose martial law.

"Not in any meaningful legal sense, and certainly not because of allegations about an election," Mines said. "No federal statute authorizes a president to declare martial law, so anyone claiming the power would have to find it in the Constitution itself."

Pointing to the Supreme Court's 1866 decision in Ex parte Milligan, Mines said the court held that martial rule "can never exist where the courts are open, and in the proper and unobstructed exercise of their jurisdiction."

"On Election Day, the courts will be open," Mines said. "A claim that an election was rigged is a claim to take to those courts, not a reason to replace them."

Mines similarly said neither martial law, the Insurrection Act nor an emergency declaration would give the president those powers. She noted that the National Emergencies Act requires presidents to identify the specific statutory authorities they intend to invoke.

"There is no statute he could name that lets him postpone a federal election, stop a count, take custody of ballots, or order a nationwide hand recount," Mines said.

For congressional elections, she added, the Constitution gives each chamber of Congress, not the president, the power to judge the elections, returns, and qualifications of its own members.

The Brennan Center's Derek Tisler similarly told Axios that emergency powers are not a "blank check" that lets presidents disregard the Constitution or federal law.

Newsweek reached out to Tisler for additional comment.

Presidents do possess substantial authority to deploy troops domestically without imposing martial law. The Insurrection Act provides circumstances in which a president may use federal forces to suppress insurrection, enforce federal law, or protect constitutional rights when specific statutory conditions are met. But the Brennan Center notes that the law does not expressly authorize the military to replace civilian government, making invocation of the Insurrection Act legally distinct from martial law.

Federal law also specifically restricts military involvement in elections. Mines cited 18 U.S.C. § 592, which makes it a crime for federal civil or military personnel to station troops at polling places, except when necessary to repel armed enemies of the United States. She also cited 18 U.S.C. § 593, which prohibits members of the armed forces from imposing election rules different from those prescribed by law or interfering with election officials carrying out their duties.

"Each carries up to five years in prison," Mines said.

She argued that those congressional restrictions matter under the Supreme Court framework established in Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer, under which presidential power is weakest when the president acts contrary to Congress' expressed will.

Why Martial Law Is Being Discussed by Trump Allies

The calls for extraordinary action reflect years of continued skepticism about U.S. election systems among some Trump supporters following his false claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.

The debate also comes as people who challenged the 2020 outcome hold positions or maintain influence around Trump's administration. Heather Honey, who disputed the 2020 election results in Pennsylvania and Arizona, now serves as the Department of Homeland Security's deputy assistant secretary for election integrity. White House adviser Peter Navarro has continued to promote his claims of widespread irregularities in the 2020 election.

Legitimate cybersecurity concerns also surround the coming election, though they do not prove widespread electoral fraud. The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency have warned election officials, candidates and political organizations about hackers using increasingly sophisticated phishing messages to steal passwords or other sensitive information, according to material provided for this story.

The White House did not directly answer Newsweek's questions about whether Trump supports calls for martial law or would consider using martial law or other emergency authorities in connection with the midterms. Instead, spokeswoman Lauren Bis pointed to the administration's broader election-security efforts.

"President Trump has done more than any other President to ensure we have free and fair elections," Bis told Newsweek. "Every American should be asking why the radical Left continues to fight against commonsense election integrity measures, like Voter ID and citizenship verification to make sure only Americans decide our elections."

Bis said the administration was "taking decisive action to protect our elections," citing election-crime prosecutions, election-infrastructure security and efforts to protect vulnerable voters from fraud and coercion. The White House also referred Newsweek to Justice Department election-crime prosecutions, plans to deploy election monitors on Election Day, and the Department of Homeland Security's 2026 Election Infrastructure Security Plan.

The statement did not say whether Trump would consider martial law or other emergency powers if his allies challenged the legitimacy of the November election.".

Product Find Catalytic handwarmers

I only recently learned that catalytic handwarmers exist. There are several brands that come with various pros and cons.

Im trying one for the first time. So, Im still at the start of the learning curve. (I added a long paracord to mine. My thighs tend to get cold. So I wanted to be able to tuck it against them, without me forgetting and dropping/breaking it when I stand up. 😆 )

My questions for you:

- Have you tried any? If so, which kinds?

- What was your use case?

- Pros and cons of the one(s) you used?

- Any tips and tricks/DIY hacks?

- Anything else you'd like to share about catalytic handwarmers?

Im bummed out that it's not safe to use while sleeping, or in closed tents, sleeping bags. (At least, not the one I bought.) Those were some of my original intentions for getting one. The instructions warn against using it for sleep though. And according to Google (🌾of🧂), catalytic handwarmers produce carbon dioxide, and can even release carbon monoxide in some conditions as well.

I'm wondering just how ventilated the space needs to be. 🤔 (My current place is about 475 square feet.)

Ive got the sliding glass door open where I am at present, running an experiment on how long it will stay hot. The unit I bought advertises "up to 24 hours" of heat. My test wont be a continuous run though.

Closer to bedtime, Ill be tucking it into a freezer ziplock bag, to cut off the oxygen supply and time how long it takes to go cold. Tomorrow, Ill relight it in (without adding extra fuel), and start timer again until it runs out.

Images of mine and image descriptions available on Imgur, linked below. Im not an advertiser. As I mentioned, there are pros and cons to each of the various brands and units. https://imgur.com/gallery/3sZ0AHw

❓ Question ❓ safely reuse water jugs

I have a bunch of 1 gallon plastic jugs that were previously filled with distilled water. I’ve been using them in the dehumidifier for my daughter. Is there a safe way to reuse them for prep? I thought about just refilling them and keeping them in the basement, maybe some water is better than none? But I don’t know if that’s really safe. Any other ideas?

Tips Duct tape for everything? Even flooding!

UK researchers recently tested methods of sealing doors during flooding and found that duct tape was a great option!

"Tests using different tapes, sandbags and a variety of doors have been carried out at the University of Hull.

The research found, when compared with an unprotected door, flexible synthetic rubber tape reduced water leakage by 99%, duct tape by 97 to 98% and sandbags by 70%."

BBC - Tape more effective than sandbags in flood tests

Duct tape can be used for so many things it should always be kept on hand. This is another great use and good reason to keep it handy for any prep!

Discussion News: Finnish households to receive printed emergency preparedness guide in January

(There is no news flair, so I'm putting this under generic "discussion" one.) The Finnish government announced yesterday evening that besides the 72tuntia (72hours) and other official preparedness websites, alongside some local municipal preparedness paper leaflets, there will be a printed guide delivered all over mainland Finland. My guess is that the archipelago, especially the largest island of Ahvenanmaa/Åland will get their own version. This morning the news was published also in English, so I decided to share it here, too.

My guess is that this is one way to make sure that everyone has the basic information even if there is a cyber attack and the internet goes down. This is also an excellent way to wake people up a bit - even those, who have never visited any preparedness or household stock up sites.

"The Finnish Interior Ministry will distribute around 3.5 million printed emergency preparedness guides to households and businesses across mainland Finland in January.

The guide will explain how people should prepare for disruptions and crisis situations. It will also cover the increasingly topical threat posed by drones.

Such a guide is essential in case electricity and internet connections are disrupted.

"It is not enough for guidance on preparing for disruptions and crises to be available to the public only through the Suomi.fi online service," says Ira Pasi, a project manager at the Interior Ministry.

The ministry has previously noted that an online guide is a cheaper option and easier to update.

"Reading the online version is particularly easy for the groups that are least prepared. Those who are least prepared are young adults and urban residents," Pasi says."

Female Specific ♀️ [UK] Superdrug and Boots sell the morning after pill “for future use”

Bullet points for ease:

- Superdrug and Boots (+ probably others) sell the morning after pill.

- there are 3 pill options with the cheapest being £9.99. I think the most expensive is £39.99.

- you do NOT need to speak to a GP or anyone in person. It can be requested entirely online in under 5 minutes.

- you can request it delivered to your door for about ~£3.

- you can request it for future use:

- you can request it for future use even if you do/don’t currently use contraception.

- you can request it multiple times (I’m at 3+ requests in 2 years, stockpiled for emergencies).

- the request form is 1 page total and asks very few questions. I’m data-cautious and don’t feel like it’s at all invasive.

- my GP and specialists (I have a complex health history) don’t seem to be flagged to this. This seems to be a relatively secure way to obtain emergency contraception without any issues.

Unwanted pregnancy is torture. Childbirth kills. Even more so in emergency situations without medical care.

You may not need the pill today, but what if your neighbour, your undocumented friend, your coerced coworker, or niece, need it tomorrow? What if their GP isn’t safe or available?

Let’s keep up the work of the women who came before us by continuing to keep these available to ALL.

❓ Question ❓ Prepping for perimenopause

I am in the process of re-stocking the house for the potential of intermittent supply chain issues, rising prices, food insecurity, maybe needing to stay in the house for a while.

I'm good at planning food, hygeine, all that stuff. BUT - I'm just starting to see peri symptoms show up (like someone swapped my body overnight for one that looks familiar but isn't mine). And I really don't know what to expect.

For those who've been through this and survived, any ideas and/or suggestions for items that I should add to my stash that I may not know I'll want as I head into this unwelcome season of life.

I know it's a silly question, but it's also really hard to get a quality result from a Google search on prepping for perimenopause. So I'm thinking this group may know - if I were unable to go to the store, what will I wish I had at home?

I already have estradiol, and period undies because three weeks is apparently the new month. And I'm adding more protein & fiber to the food stash. Have a decent home gym setup. And I have more tweezers and a magnifying mirror in my Amazon list (because if SHTF, I don't want to get caught with that hair on my cheek).

Garden Wisdom 🌱 Coding project I am working on

idk what flair to use.

I am working on an open source project for home garden and/or farm automation fully offline no logins or internet required. no data center required if you install/manage it yourself.

https://github.com/coder-christa/ai-photo-capture

What does this portion of code do?

its a photo tool for taking a massive amount of photos for classification, and prediction algorithms. it can be used to train the future algorithms on your specific needs and your setup.

You install this on your small device, point the USB webcam camera at pests, crops, or plants with diseases etc. You schedule how often it collects photos then come back to photos when you're ready.

There are larger tie ins beyond this but this part only takes the photos and saves them. it also does a safety check to look for humans and blurs them automatically before saving. this can be used indoors or outdoors, but you need to protect your hardware from the elements.

read through the readme file in the code base for more details.

I use this code at home, but it hasn't been widely tested on many devices so there will likely be some friction installing and setting up.

I am actively publishing the code after I do baseline testing. Expect more code dumps over the next few weeks/months.

feel free to comment on your thoughts here or DM me over on git directly.

Discussion I want fridge backup I can manage when my husband is away

Our first power outage after moving to the North Carolina coast had me worrying about the groceries we'd just bought. We'd only just unpacked. Flashlights weren't even on my shopping list yet.

After that I started reading about fridge backup. I bookmarked a build using a vatrer 48V rack battery with a separate inverter and charger, then sent it to my husband. It was put together for a fridge, lights and phone charging, which sounded about right for us. I'd be happy keeping the food cold and being able to charge our phones.

He's away for work this week, so I'm waiting until he's home before ordering anything. He usually handles our electrical projects and I want to look through the parts with him. In the meantime, I still need to find out what our fridge uses in a day. Overnight backup is what I have in mind, but I don't have the numbers yet.

I also want to try using the finished setup myself before we actually need it. If the power goes out while he's away, I'll be the one home with the kids.

I've bought the flashlights now, and we've talked about where I'd take the kids if we had to leave. The fridge is the next thing I'm trying to sort out. If you've done this, what do you wish you'd checked before buying the parts?

❓ Question ❓ Battery backup in an apartment?

So I've finally got my partner on board with resiliency prepping. Rainwater collection, solar, intensive gardening, etc.

Here's the problem: they just got a new job, and the housing market is slow there because it's October. Which means we're selling our dream home (complete with whole home generator) and moving into an apartment through the winter. With all of this talk of grid issues, the cost of fuel, etc. I'm concerned about extended outages that we have no control over. I know that balcony solar exists, but we've got a north-facing balcony. Before they started interviewing for this job we were talking about baby steps to a full solar array by getting some backup batteries, charging them on super off-peak hours (we've elected for time of use pricing), and using said batteries during peak hours to reduce our energy bill. Is there a way to do this in an apartment, or some other renter-friendly way to have electricity backup without keeping a gas generator on the balcony? (Which I'm sure would be disallowed anyway)

Discussion Europe commercial refrigeration systems facing cyber attack. Giant and FoodLion in US also facing threat.

1 ) Ongoing cyber attack across Europe is setting many grocery store fridge systems to defrost, spoiling food.

2) “Citing “a security issue within its network,” Ahold Delhaize has taken some systems offline as its teams assess and mitigate the problem. At press time, the websites for U.S. banners Food Lion, The Giant Co., Giant Food, Hannaford, and Stop & Shop were all down, as well as such international chains as Albert Heijn, although Ahold Delhaize stores remain open and operational.”

Discussion This weeks preps

I just wanted to discuss my planned preps for the week, this week, and am curious about what other people are planning for their own preps.

I'm focusing on baking essentials and holiday favorites.

Butter, flour, chocolate chips, French cut green beans, and fresh cider for later use. I'm also grabbing books and games at TJ Maxx, Thrift Books, and other second hand book retailers. Also some 5 gallon buckets for storing necessary staples like baking soda, laundry detergent, sugar, ect.

What are y'alls plans since winter storm season is fast approaching.
